1 Inasmuchasmanyhaveundertakentocompileanarrativeofthethingsthat^ahavebeenaccomplishedamongus,2 ^bjustasthosewho^cfromthebeginningwere^deyewitnessesand^eministersof^ftheword^ghavedeliveredthemtous,3 itseemedgoodtomealso,havingfollowedallthingscloselyforsometimepast,towrite^hanorderlyaccountforyou,ⁱmostexcellent^jTheophilus,4 thatyoumayhave^kcertaintyconcerningthethings^lyouhavebeentaught.

Birth of John the Baptist Foretold

5 ^mInthedaysofHerod,kingofJudea,therewasapriestnamedZechariah,¹ⁿof^othedivisionofAbijah.AndhehadawifefromthedaughtersofAaron,andhernamewasElizabeth.6 Andtheywereboth^prighteousbeforeGod,walking^qblamelesslyinallthecommandmentsandstatutesoftheLord.7 Buttheyhadnochild,because^rElizabethwasbarren,and^sbothwereadvancedinyears.

8 Now^twhilehewasservingaspriestbeforeGodwhen^uhisdivisionwasonduty,9 accordingtothecustomofthepriesthood,hewaschosenbylot^vtoenter^wthetempleoftheLordandburnincense.10 Andthewholemultitudeofthepeople^xwerepraying^youtsideatthehourofincense.11 AndthereappearedtohimanangeloftheLordstandingontherightsideof^zthealtarofincense.12 AndZechariahwastroubledwhenhesawhim,and^afearfelluponhim.13 Buttheangelsaidtohim,“Donotbeafraid,Zechariah,for^byourprayerhasbeenheard,andyourwifeElizabethwillbearyouason,and^cyoushallcallhisnameJohn.14 Andyouwillhavejoyandgladness,andmanywill^drejoiceathisbirth,15 forhewillbe^egreatbeforetheLord.And^fhemustnotdrinkwineorstrong^gdrink,and^ghewillbe^hfilledwiththeHolySpirit,ⁱevenfromhismother’swomb.16 AndhewillturnmanyofthechildrenofIsraeltotheLordtheirGod,17 and^jhewillgobeforehim^kinthespiritandpowerofElijah,^ltoturntheheartsofthefatherstothechildren,and^mthedisobedienttothewisdomofthejust,ⁿtomakereadyfortheLordapeopleprepared.”

18 AndZechariahsaidtotheangel,^o“HowshallIknowthis?ForIamanoldman,andmywifeisadvancedinyears.”19 Andtheangelansweredhim,“Iam^pGabriel.^qIstandinthepresenceofGod,andIwassenttospeaktoyouandtobringyouthisgoodnews.20 Andbehold,^ryouwillbesilentandunabletospeakuntilthedaythatthesethingstakeplace,becauseyoudidnotbelievemywords,whichwillbefulfilledintheirtime.”21 AndthepeoplewerewaitingforZechariah,andtheywerewonderingathisdelayin^sthetemple.22 Andwhenhecameout,hewasunabletospeaktothem,andtheyrealizedthathehadseenavisionin^sthetemple.And^thekeptmakingsignstothemandremainedmute.23 And^uwhenhistimeof^vservicewasended,hewenttohishome.

24 AfterthesedayshiswifeElizabethconceived,andforfivemonthsshekeptherselfhidden,saying,25 “ThustheLordhasdoneformeinthedayswhenhelookedonme,^wtotakeawaymyreproachamongpeople.”

Birth of Jesus Foretold

26 Inthesixthmonththeangel^xGabrielwassentfromGodtoacityofGalileenamed^yNazareth,27 ^ztoavirginbetrothed²toamanwhosenamewasJoseph,^aofthehouseofDavid.Andthevirgin’snamewasMary.28 Andhecametoherandsaid,“Greetings,^bOfavoredone,^ctheLordiswithyou!”³29 But^dshewasgreatlytroubledatthesaying,andtriedtodiscernwhatsortofgreetingthismightbe.30 Andtheangelsaidtoher,“Donotbeafraid,Mary,for^eyouhavefoundfavorwithGod.31 Andbehold,^fyouwillconceiveinyourwombandbearason,and^gyoushallcallhisnameJesus.32 HewillbegreatandwillbecalledtheSonof^htheMostHigh.AndtheLordGodⁱwillgivetohimthethroneof^jhisfatherDavid,33 andhewillreignoverthehouseofJacob^kforever,andofhiskingdomtherewillbenoend.”

34 AndMarysaidtotheangel,“Howwillthisbe,sinceIamavirgin?”⁴

35 Andtheangelansweredher,^l“TheHolySpiritwillcomeuponyou,andthepowerof^htheMostHighwillovershadowyou;thereforethechildtobeborn⁵willbecalled^mholy—ⁿtheSonofGod.36 Andbehold,yourrelativeElizabethinheroldagehasalsoconceivedason,andthisisthesixthmonthwithher^owhowascalledbarren.37 For^pnothingwillbeimpossiblewithGod.”38 AndMarysaid,“Behold,Iamtheservant⁶oftheLord;letitbetomeaccordingtoyourword.”And^qtheangeldepartedfromher.

Mary Visits Elizabeth

39 InthosedaysMaryaroseandwentwithhasteinto^rthehillcountry,toatowninJudah,40 andsheenteredthehouseofZechariahandgreetedElizabeth.41 AndwhenElizabethheardthegreetingofMary,thebabyleapedinherwomb.AndElizabeth^swasfilledwiththeHolySpirit,42 andsheexclaimedwithaloudcry,^t“Blessedareyouamongwomen,and^ublessedis^vthefruitofyourwomb!43 Andwhyisthisgrantedtomethatthemotherof^wmyLordshouldcometome?44 Forbehold,whenthesoundofyourgreetingcametomyears,thebabyinmywombleapedforjoy.45 And^xblessedisshewhobelievedthattherewouldbe⁷afulfillmentofwhatwasspokentoherfromtheLord.”

57 NowthetimecameforElizabethtogivebirth,andsheboreason.58 AndherneighborsandrelativesheardthattheLord^shadshowngreatmercytoher,andtheyrejoicedwithher.59 And^tontheeighthdaytheycametocircumcisethechild.AndtheywouldhavecalledhimZechariahafterhisfather,60 buthismotheranswered,“No;^uheshallbecalledJohn.”61 Andtheysaidtoher,“Noneofyourrelativesiscalledbythisname.”62 And^vtheymadesignstohisfather,inquiringwhathewantedhimtobecalled.63 Andheaskedfor^wawritingtabletandwrote,^u“HisnameisJohn.”Andtheyallwondered.64 ^xAndimmediatelyhismouthwasopenedandhistongue^yloosed,andhespoke,^zblessingGod.65 And^afearcameonalltheirneighbors.Andallthesethingsweretalkedaboutthroughall^bthehillcountryofJudea,66 andallwhoheardthem^claidthemupintheirhearts,saying,“Whatthenwillthischildbe?”For^dthehandoftheLordwaswithhim.

Zechariah’s Prophecy

67 AndhisfatherZechariah^ewasfilledwiththeHolySpiritand^fprophesied,saying,

80 ^jAndthechildgrewandbecamestronginspirit,andhewas^kinthewildernessuntilthedayofhispublicappearancetoIsrael.

2 Inthosedays^ladecreewentoutfrom^mCaesarAugustusthatalltheworldshouldbeⁿregistered.2 Thiswasthefirstⁿregistrationwhen¹Quirinius^owasgovernorofSyria.3 Andallwenttoberegistered,eachtohisowntown.4 AndJosephalsowentup^pfromGalilee,fromthetownof^qNazareth,toJudea,to^rthecityofDavid,whichiscalled^sBethlehem,^tbecausehewasofthehouseandlineageofDavid,5 toberegisteredwithMary,hisbetrothed,²whowaswithchild.6 And^twhiletheywerethere,thetimecameforhertogivebirth.7 Andshegavebirthtoherfirstbornsonand^uwrappedhiminswaddlingclothsand^vlaidhiminamanger,becausetherewasnoplaceforthemin^wtheinn.³

The Shepherds and the Angels

8 Andinthesameregiontherewereshepherdsoutinthefield,keepingwatchovertheirflockbynight.9 AndanangeloftheLord^xappearedtothem,and^ythegloryoftheLordshonearoundthem,andtheywerefilledwithgreatfear.10 Andtheangelsaidtothem,“Fearnot,forbehold,Ibringyougoodnewsofgreatjoythatwillbeforall^zthepeople.11 For^auntoyouisbornthisdayin^bthecityofDavid^caSavior,whois^dChrist^etheLord.12 And^fthiswillbeasignforyou:youwillfindababy^gwrappedinswaddlingclothsandlyinginamanger.”13 Andsuddenlytherewaswiththeangel^hamultitudeoftheheavenlyhostpraisingGodandsaying,

15 Whentheangelswentawayfromthemintoheaven,theshepherdssaidtooneanother,“LetusgoovertoBethlehemandseethisthingthathashappened,whichtheLordhasmadeknowntous.”16 AndtheywentwithhasteandfoundMaryandJoseph,andthebaby^mlyinginamanger.17 Andwhentheysawit,theymadeknownthesayingthathadbeentoldthemconcerningthischild.18 Andallwhohearditwonderedatwhattheshepherdstoldthem.19 ButⁿMarytreasuredupallthesethings,ponderingtheminherheart.20 Andtheshepherdsreturned,^oglorifyingandpraisingGodforalltheyhadheardandseen,asithadbeentoldthem.

21 And^pattheendofeightdays,whenhewascircumcised,^qhewascalledJesus,thenamegivenbytheangelbeforehewasconceivedinthewomb.

Jesus Presented at the Temple

22 And^rwhenthetimecamefortheirpurificationaccordingtotheLawofMoses,theybroughthimuptoJerusalem^stopresenthimtotheLord23 (asitiswrittenin^ttheLawoftheLord,^u“EverymalewhofirstopensthewombshallbecalledholytotheLord”)24 andtoofferasacrificeaccordingtowhatissaidin^ttheLawoftheLord,^v“apairofturtledoves,ortwoyoungpigeons.”25 NowtherewasamaninJerusalem,whosenamewasSimeon,andthismanwas^wrighteousand^xdevout,^ywaitingfor^ztheconsolationofIsrael,andtheHolySpiritwasuponhim.26 AndithadbeenrevealedtohimbytheHolySpiritthathewouldnot^aseedeathbeforehehadseen^btheLord’sChrist.27 AndhecameintheSpiritintothetemple,andwhen^ctheparentsbroughtinthechildJesus,todoforhimaccordingtothecustomoftheLaw,28 hetookhimupinhisarmsand^dblessedGodandsaid,

33 And^mhisfatherandhismothermarveledatwhatwassaidabouthim.34 AndSimeonblessedthemandsaidtoMaryhismother,“Behold,thischildisappointedⁿforthefallandrisingofmanyinIsrael,andforasign^othatisopposed35 (andaswordwillpiercethroughyourownsoulalso),sothatthoughtsfrommanyheartsmayberevealed.”

36 Andtherewas^paprophetess,Anna,thedaughterofPhanuel,ofthetribeofAsher.Shewasadvancedinyears,havinglivedwithherhusbandsevenyearsfromwhenshewasavirgin,37 andthenasawidowuntilshewaseighty-four.⁶Shedidnotdepartfromthetemple,^qworshipingwith^rfastingandprayernightandday.38 AndcomingupatthatveryhourshebegantogivethankstoGodandtospeakofhimtoallwhowere^swaitingfortheredemptionofJerusalem.

The Return to Nazareth

39 Andwhentheyhadperformedeverythingaccordingto^ttheLawoftheLord,theyreturnedintoGalilee,totheirowntownof^uNazareth.40 ^vAndthechildgrewandbecamestrong,filledwithwisdom.AndthefavorofGodwasuponhim.

The Boy Jesus in the Temple

41 Now^whisparentswent^xtoJerusalemeveryyearat^ytheFeastofthePassover.42 Andwhenhewastwelveyearsold,^ztheywentupaccordingtocustom.43 Andwhenthefeast^awasended,astheywerereturning,theboyJesusstayedbehindinJerusalem.^wHisparentsdidnotknowit,44 butsupposinghimtobeinthegrouptheywentaday’sjourney,butthentheybegantosearchforhimamongtheirrelativesandacquaintances,45 andwhentheydidnotfindhim,theyreturnedtoJerusalem,searchingforhim.46 Afterthreedaystheyfoundhiminthetemple,^bsittingamong^ctheteachers,listeningtothemandaskingthemquestions.47 Andallwhoheardhimwereamazedathisunderstandingandhisanswers.48 Andwhenhisparents⁷sawhim,theywereastonished.Andhismothersaidtohim,“Son,whyhaveyoutreatedusso?Behold,^dyourfatherandIhavebeensearchingforyouingreatdistress.”49 Andhesaidtothem,“Whywereyoulookingforme?Didyounotknowthat^eImustbein^fmyFather’shouse?”⁸50 And^gtheydidnotunderstandthesayingthathespoketothem.51 AndhewentdownwiththemandcametoNazarethandwassubmissivetothem.And^hhismothertreasuredupallthesethingsinherheart.

52 AndJesusⁱincreasedinwisdomandinstature⁹andinⁱfavorwithGodandman.

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

3 Inthefifteenthyearofthereignof^jTiberiusCaesar,^kPontiusPilate^lbeinggovernorofJudea,and^mHerodbeingtetrarchofGalilee,andhisbrotherPhiliptetrarchoftheregionofIturaeaandTrachonitis,andLysaniastetrarchofAbilene,2 duringⁿthehighpriesthoodofAnnasand^oCaiaphas,^pthewordofGodcameto^qJohnthesonofZechariahin^rthewilderness.3 AndhewentintoalltheregionaroundtheJordan,proclaiming^sabaptismofrepentance^tfortheforgivenessofsins.4 Asitiswrittenin^uthebookofthewordsofIsaiahtheprophet,

7 Hesaidthereforetothecrowdsthatcameouttobebaptizedbyhim,^c“Youbroodof^dvipers!Whowarnedyoutofleefrom^ethewrathtocome?8 Bearfruits^finkeepingwithrepentance.Anddonotbegintosaytoyourselves,^g‘WehaveAbrahamasourfather.’ForItellyou,Godisablefrom^hthesestonestoraiseupchildrenforAbraham.9 Evennowtheaxeislaidtotherootofthetrees.ⁱEverytreethereforethatdoesnotbeargoodfruitiscutdownandthrownintothefire.”

10 Andthecrowdsaskedhim,^j“Whatthenshallwedo?”11 Andheansweredthem,^k“Whoeverhastwotunics²istosharewithhimwhohasnone,andwhoeverhasfoodistodolikewise.”12 ^lTaxcollectorsalsocametobebaptizedandsaidtohim,“Teacher,^jwhatshallwedo?”13 Andhesaidtothem,^m“Collectnomorethanyouareauthorizedtodo.”14 Soldiersalsoaskedhim,“Andwe,^jwhatshallwedo?”Andhesaidtothem,^m“Donotextortmoneyfromanyonebythreatsorbyfalseaccusation,andbecontentwithyourⁿwages.”

15 Asthepeoplewereinexpectation,andallwerequestioningintheirheartsconcerningJohn,^owhetherhemightbe^ptheChrist,16 ^qJohnansweredthemall,saying,“Ibaptizeyouwithwater,but^rhewhoismightierthanIiscoming,^sthestrapofwhosesandalsIamnotworthytountie.Hewillbaptizeyou^twiththeHolySpiritand^ufire.17 His^vwinnowingforkisinhishand,toclearhisthreshingfloorandto^wgatherthewheatintohisbarn,^xbutthechaffhewillburnwith^yunquenchablefire.”

18 So^zwithmanyotherexhortationshepreachedgoodnewstothepeople.19 But^aHerodthetetrarch,whohadbeenreprovedbyhimforHerodias,hisbrother’swife,andforalltheevilthingsthatHerodhaddone,20 addedthistothemall,that^bhelockedupJohninprison.

21 Nowwhenallthepeoplewerebaptized,andwhen^cJesusalsohadbeenbaptizedandwaspraying,^dtheheavenswereopened,22 and^etheHolySpiritdescendedonhiminbodilyform,likeadove;and^favoicecamefromheaven,^g“YouaremybelovedSon;³withyouIamwellpleased.”⁴
