14 OneSabbath,^pwhenhewenttodineatthehouseofarulerofthePharisees,theywere^qwatchinghimcarefully.2 Andbehold,therewasamanbeforehimwhohaddropsy.3 AndJesusrespondedto^rthelawyersandPharisees,saying,^s“IsitlawfultohealontheSabbath,ornot?”4 Buttheyremainedsilent.Thenhetookhimandhealedhimandsenthimaway.5 Andhesaidtothem,^t“Whichofyou,havingason¹oranoxthathasfallenintoawellonaSabbathday,willnotimmediatelypullhimout?”6 ^uAndtheycouldnotreplytothesethings.

The Parable of the Wedding Feast

7 Nowhetoldaparabletothosewhowereinvited,whenhenoticed^vhowtheychosetheplacesofhonor,sayingtothem,8 “Whenyouareinvitedbysomeonetoaweddingfeast,donotsitdowninaplaceofhonor,lestsomeonemoredistinguishedthanyoubeinvitedbyhim,9 andhewhoinvitedyoubothwillcomeandsaytoyou,‘Giveyourplacetothisperson,’andthenyouwillbeginwithshametotakethelowestplace.10 Butwhenyouareinvited,goandsitinthelowestplace,^wsothatwhenyourhostcomeshemaysaytoyou,‘Friend,moveuphigher.’Thenyouwillbehonoredinthepresenceofallwhositattablewithyou.11 For^xeveryonewhoexaltshimselfwillbehumbled,andhewhohumbleshimselfwillbeexalted.”

The Parable of the Great Banquet

12 Hesaidalsotothemanwhohadinvitedhim,“Whenyougive^yadinnerorabanquet,donotinviteyourfriendsoryourbrothers²oryourrelativesorrichneighbors,^zlesttheyalsoinviteyouinreturnandyouberepaid.13 Butwhenyougiveafeast,^ainvite^bthepoor,thecrippled,thelame,theblind,14 andyouwillbeblessed,becausetheycannotrepayyou.Foryouwillberepaid^cat^dtheresurrectionofthejust.”

15 Whenoneofthosewhoreclinedattablewithhimheardthesethings,hesaidtohim,^e“Blessediseveryonewhowill^featbreadinthekingdomofGod!”16 Buthesaidtohim,^g“Amanonce^hgaveagreatbanquetandinvitedmany.17 Andatthetimeforthebanquetheⁱsenthisservant³tosaytothosewhohadbeeninvited,‘Come,foreverythingisnowready.’18 Buttheyallalikebegantomakeexcuses.Thefirstsaidtohim,‘Ihaveboughtafield,andImustgooutandseeit.Pleasehavemeexcused.’19 Andanothersaid,‘Ihaveboughtfiveyokeofoxen,andIgotoexaminethem.Pleasehavemeexcused.’20 Andanothersaid,^j‘Ihavemarriedawife,andthereforeIcannotcome.’21 Sotheservantcameandreportedthesethingstohismaster.Thenthemasterofthehousebecameangryandsaidtohisservant,‘Gooutquicklytothestreetsandlanesofthecity,andbringin^kthepoorandcrippledandblindandlame.’22 Andtheservantsaid,‘Sir,whatyoucommandedhasbeendone,andstillthereisroom.’23 Andthemastersaidtotheservant,‘Goouttothehighwaysandhedgesandcompelpeopletocomein,thatmyhousemaybefilled.24 ForItellyou,^4mnoneofthosemenwhowereinvitedshalltastemybanquet.’”

The Cost of Discipleship

25 Nowgreatcrowdsaccompaniedhim,andheturnedandsaidtothem,26 ⁿ“Ifanyonecomestomeand^odoesnothatehisownfatherandmotherandwifeandchildrenandbrothersandsisters,^pyes,andevenhisownlife,hecannotbemydisciple.27 ^qWhoeverdoesnot^rbearhisowncrossandcomeaftermecannotbemydisciple.28 Forwhichofyou,desiringtobuildatower,doesnot^sfirstsitdownandcountthecost,whetherhehasenoughtocompleteit?29 Otherwise,whenhehaslaidafoundationandisnotabletofinish,allwhoseeitbegintomockhim,30 saying,‘Thismanbegantobuildandwasnotabletofinish.’31 Orwhatking,goingouttoencounteranotherkinginwar,willnot^tsitdownfirstanddeliberatewhetherheisablewithtenthousandtomeethimwhocomesagainsthimwithtwentythousand?32 Andifnot,whiletheotherisyetagreatwayoff,hesendsadelegationandasksfortermsofpeace.33 ^uSotherefore,anyoneofyouwho^vdoesnotrenounceallthathehascannotbemydisciple.

Salt Without Taste Is Worthless

34 ^w“Saltisgood,^xbutifsalthaslostitstaste,howshallitssaltinessberestored?35 Itisofnouseeitherforthesoilorforthemanurepile.Itisthrownaway.^yHewhohasearstohear,lethimhear.”

The Parable of the Lost Sheep

15 Now^zthetaxcollectorsandsinnerswerealldrawingneartohearhim.2 AndthePhariseesandthescribes^agrumbled,saying,^b“Thismanreceivessinnersand^ceatswiththem.”

3 Sohetoldthemthisparable:4 ^d“Whatmanofyou,havingahundredsheep,^eifhehaslostoneofthem,doesnotleavetheninety-nine^fintheopencountry,and^ggoaftertheonethatislost,untilhefindsit?5 Andwhenhehasfoundit,^hhelaysitonhisshoulders,rejoicing.6 Andwhenhecomeshome,hecallstogetherhisfriendsandhisneighbors,sayingtothem,‘Rejoicewithme,forⁱIhavefoundmysheepthatwaslost.’7 Justso,Itellyou,therewillbemorejoyinheavenoveronesinnerwho^jrepentsthanoverninety-nine^krighteouspersonswhoneednorepentance.

8 “Orwhatwoman,havingtensilvercoins,¹ifshelosesonecoin,doesnotlightalampandsweepthehouseandseekdiligentlyuntilshefindsit?9 Andwhenshehasfoundit,shecallstogetherherfriendsandneighbors,saying,‘Rejoicewithme,forIhavefoundthecointhatIhadlost.’10 Justso,Itellyou,thereisjoybefore^ltheangelsofGodoveronesinnerwhorepents.”

The Parable of the Prodigal Son

11 Andhesaid,“Therewasamanwhohadtwosons.12 Andtheyoungerofthemsaidtohisfather,‘Father,giveme^mtheshareofpropertythatiscomingtome.’Andhedividedⁿhispropertybetweenthem.13 Notmanydayslater,theyoungersongatheredallhehadandtookajourneyintoafarcountry,andtherehesquanderedhispropertyin^orecklessliving.14 Andwhenhehadspenteverything,aseverefaminearoseinthatcountry,andhebegantobeinneed.15 Sohewentandhiredhimselfoutto²oneofthecitizensofthatcountry,whosenthimintohisfieldstofeedpigs.16 Andhe^pwaslongingtobefedwiththepodsthatthepigsate,andnoonegavehimanything.

17 “But^qwhenhe^rcametohimself,hesaid,‘Howmanyofmyfather’shiredservantshavemorethanenoughbread,butIperishherewithhunger!18 Iwillariseandgotomyfather,andIwillsaytohim,“Father,^sIhavesinnedagainst^theavenandbeforeyou.19 ^uIamnolongerworthytobecalledyourson.Treatmeasoneofyourhiredservants.”’20 Andhearoseandcametohisfather.Butwhilehewasstillalongwayoff,hisfathersawhimandfeltcompassion,and^vranand^wembracedhimand^xkissedhim.21 Andthesonsaidtohim,‘Father,Ihavesinnedagainstheavenandbeforeyou.^uIamnolongerworthytobecalledyourson.’³22 Butthefathersaidtohisservants,⁴‘Bringquickly^ythebestrobe,andputitonhim,andput^zaringonhishand,and^ashoesonhisfeet.23 Andbring^bthefattenedcalfandkillit,and^cletuseatandcelebrate.24 Forthismyson^dwasdead,andisaliveagain;hewaslost,andisfound.’Andtheybegantocelebrate.

25 “Nowhisoldersonwasinthefield,andashecameanddrewneartothehouse,heheardmusicanddancing.26 Andhecalledoneoftheservantsandaskedwhatthesethingsmeant.27 Andhesaidtohim,‘Yourbrotherhascome,andyourfatherhaskilledthefattenedcalf,becausehehasreceivedhimbacksafeandsound.’28 Buthewasangryandrefusedtogoin.Hisfathercameoutandentreatedhim,29 butheansweredhisfather,‘Look,thesemanyyearsIhaveservedyou,andIneverdisobeyedyourcommand,yetyounevergavemeayounggoat,thatImight^ecelebratewithmyfriends.30 Butwhenthissonofyourscame,^fwhohasdevoured^gyourpropertywithprostitutes,youkilledthefattenedcalfforhim!’31 Andhesaidtohim,‘Son,^hyouarealwayswithme,andallthatismineisyours.32 Itwasfitting^etocelebrateandbeglad,forthisyourbrotherⁱwasdead,andisalive;hewaslost,andisfound.’”

The Parable of the Dishonest Manager

16 Healsosaidtothedisciples,“Therewasarichmanwhohad^jamanager,andchargeswerebroughttohimthatthismanwaswastinghispossessions.2 Andhecalledhimandsaidtohim,‘WhatisthisthatIhearaboutyou?Turnintheaccountofyour^kmanagement,foryoucannolongerbemanager.’3 Andthemanagersaidtohimself,‘WhatshallIdo,sincemymasteristakingthemanagementawayfromme?Iamnotstrongenoughtodig,andIamashamedtobeg.4 Ihavedecidedwhattodo,sothatwhenIamremovedfrommanagement,peoplemayreceivemeintotheirhouses.’5 So,summoninghismaster’sdebtorsonebyone,hesaidtothefirst,‘Howmuchdoyouowemymaster?’6 Hesaid,‘Ahundredmeasures¹ofoil.’Hesaidtohim,‘Takeyourbill,andsitdownquicklyandwritefifty.’7 Thenhesaidtoanother,‘Andhowmuchdoyouowe?’Hesaid,‘Ahundredmeasures²ofwheat.’Hesaidtohim,‘Takeyourbill,andwriteeighty.’8 Themastercommendedthedishonestmanagerforhis^lshrewdness.For^mthesonsofthisworld³are^lmoreshrewdindealingwiththeirowngenerationthanⁿthesonsoflight.9 AndItellyou,^omakefriendsforyourselvesbymeansof^punrighteouswealth,⁴sothatwhenitfailstheymayreceiveyouintotheeternaldwellings.

10 ^q“Onewhois^rfaithfulinaverylittleisalsofaithfulinmuch,andonewhoisdishonestinaverylittleisalsodishonestinmuch.11 Ifthenyouhavenotbeenfaithfulintheunrighteouswealth,whowillentrusttoyouthetrueriches?12 Andifyouhavenotbeenfaithfulin^sthatwhichisanother’s,whowillgiveyouthatwhichisyourown?13 ^pNoservantcanservetwomasters,foreitherhewillhatetheoneandlovetheother,orhewillbedevotedtotheoneanddespisetheother.YoucannotserveGodandmoney.”

The Law and the Kingdom of God

14 ^tThePharisees,whowere^uloversofmoney,heardallthesethings,andthey^vridiculedhim.15 Andhesaidtothem,“Youarethosewho^wjustifyyourselvesbeforemen,but^xGodknowsyourhearts.Forwhatisexaltedamongmen^yisanabominationinthesightofGod.

16 ^z“TheLawandtheProphetswereuntilJohn;sincethen^athegoodnewsofthekingdomofGodispreached,and^beveryoneforceshiswayintoit.⁵17 But^citiseasierforheavenandearthtopassawaythanforonedotoftheLawtobecomevoid.

Divorce and Remarriage

18 ^d“Everyonewhodivorceshiswifeandmarriesanothercommitsadultery,andhewhomarriesawomandivorcedfromherhusbandcommitsadultery.

The Rich Man and Lazarus

19 “Therewasarichmanwhowasclothedin^epurpleandfinelinenand^fwhofeastedsumptuouslyeveryday.20 Andathisgate^gwaslaidapoormannamedLazarus,coveredwithsores,21 whodesiredtobefedwith^hwhatfellfromtherichman’stable.Moreover,eventhedogscameandlickedhissores.22 Thepoormandiedandwascarriedbyⁱtheangels^jtoAbraham’sside.⁶Therichmanalsodiedandwasburied,23 andin^kHades,beingintorment,helifteduphiseyesand^lsawAbrahamfaroffandLazarus^jathisside.24 Andhecalledout,^m‘FatherAbraham,havemercyonme,andsendLazarustodiptheendofhisfingerinwaterandⁿcoolmytongue,for^oIaminanguishinthisflame.’25 ButAbrahamsaid,‘Child,rememberthat^pyouinyourlifetimereceivedyourgoodthings,andLazarusinlikemannerbadthings;butnowheiscomfortedhere,andyouareinanguish.26 Andbesidesallthis,betweenusandyouagreatchasmhasbeenfixed,inorderthatthosewhowouldpassfromheretoyoumaynotbeable,andnonemaycrossfromtheretous.’27 Andhesaid,‘ThenIbegyou,father,tosendhimtomyfather’shouse—28 forIhavefivebrothers—sothathemaywarnthem,lesttheyalsocomeintothisplaceoftorment.’29 ButAbrahamsaid,‘Theyhave^qMosesandtheProphets;^rletthemhearthem.’30 Andhesaid,‘No,^sfatherAbraham,butifsomeonegoestothemfromthedead,theywillrepent.’31 Hesaidtohim,‘Iftheydonothear^qMosesandtheProphets,^tneitherwilltheybeconvincedifsomeoneshouldrisefromthedead.’”

Temptations to Sin

17 Andhesaidtohisdisciples,^u“Temptationstosin¹are^vsuretocome,but^wwoetotheonethroughwhomtheycome!2 ^xItwouldbebetterforhimifamillstonewerehungaroundhisneckandhewerecastintotheseathanthatheshouldcauseoneoftheselittleonestosin.²3 Payattentiontoyourselves!^yIfyourbrothersins,^zrebukehim,andifherepents,^aforgivehim,4 andifhesinsagainstyou^bseventimesintheday,andturnstoyouseventimes,saying,‘Irepent,’youmustforgivehim.”

Increase Our Faith

5 ^cTheapostlessaidtotheLord,^d“Increaseourfaith!”6 AndtheLordsaid,^e“Ifyouhadfaithlike^fagrainofmustardseed,youcouldsaytothis^gmulberrytree,‘Beuprootedandplantedinthesea,’anditwouldobeyyou.

Unworthy Servants

7 “Willanyoneofyouwhohasaservant³plowingorkeepingsheepsaytohimwhenhehascomeinfromthefield,‘Comeatonceandreclineattable’?8 Willhenotrathersaytohim,‘Preparesupperforme,and^hdressproperly,⁴andservemewhileIeatanddrink,andafterwardyouwilleatanddrink’?9 Doeshethanktheservantbecausehedidwhatwascommanded?10 Soyoualso,whenyouhavedoneallthatyouwerecommanded,say,‘Weareⁱunworthyservants;⁵wehaveonlydonewhatwasourduty.’”

Jesus Cleanses Ten Lepers

11 ^jOnthewaytoJerusalem^khewaspassingalongbetweenSamariaandGalilee.12 Andasheenteredavillage,hewasmetbytenlepers,^6lwhostoodatadistance13 andlifteduptheirvoices,saying,“Jesus,Master,havemercyonus.”14 Whenhesawthemhesaidtothem,“Goand^mshowyourselvestothepriests.”Andastheywenttheywerecleansed.15 Thenoneofthem,whenhesawthathewashealed,turnedback,ⁿpraisingGodwithaloudvoice;16 and^ohefellonhisfaceatJesus’feet,givinghimthanks.Nowhewas^paSamaritan.17 ThenJesusanswered,“Werenot^qtencleansed?Wherearethenine?18 Wasnoonefoundtoreturnand^rgivepraisetoGodexceptthis^sforeigner?”19 Andhesaidtohim,“Riseandgoyourway;^tyourfaithhas^tmadeyouwell.”⁷

The Coming of the Kingdom

20 BeingaskedbythePharisees^uwhenthekingdomofGodwouldcome,heansweredthem,“ThekingdomofGod^visnotcominginwaysthatcanbeobserved,21 nor^wwilltheysay,‘Look,hereitis!’or‘There!’forbehold,thekingdomofGodisinthemidstofyou.”⁸

22 Andhesaidtothedisciples,^x“Thedaysarecomingwhenyouwilldesire^ytoseeoneofthedaysoftheSonofMan,andyouwillnotseeit.23 ^zAndtheywillsaytoyou,‘Look,there!’or‘Look,here!’Donotgooutorfollowthem.24 ^aForasthelightningflashesandlightsuptheskyfromonesidetotheother,sowilltheSonofManbe^binhisday.⁹25 Butfirst^chemustsuffermanythingsand^cberejectedbythisgeneration.26 ^dJustasitwasinthedaysof^eNoah,sowillitbeinthedaysoftheSonofMan.27 ^fTheywereeatinganddrinkingandmarryingandbeinggiveninmarriage,untilthedaywhenNoahenteredtheark,andthefloodcameanddestroyedthemall.28 Likewise,justasitwasinthedaysof^gLot—theywereeatinganddrinking,buyingandselling,plantingandbuilding,29 ^hbutonthedaywhenLotwentoutfromSodom,fireandsulfurrainedfromheavenanddestroyedthemall—30 sowillitbeⁱonthedaywhentheSonofManisrevealed.31 Onthatday,^jlettheonewhoison^kthehousetop,withhisgoodsinthehouse,notcomedowntotakethemaway,andlikewiselettheonewhoisinthefieldnotturnback.32 ^lRememberLot’swife.33 ^mWhoeverseekstopreservehislifewillloseit,butwhoeverloseshislifewillⁿkeepit.34 Itellyou,inthatnighttherewillbetwoinonebed.Onewillbetakenandtheotherleft.35 ^oTherewillbetwowomen^pgrindingtogether.Onewillbetakenandtheotherleft.”¹⁰37 Andtheysaidtohim,“Where,Lord?”Hesaidtothem,^q“Wherethecorpse¹¹is,therethevultures¹²willgather.”

The Parable of the Persistent Widow

18 Andhetoldthemaparabletotheeffectthattheyought^ralwaystoprayandnot^sloseheart.2 Hesaid,“Inacertaincitytherewasajudgewho^tneitherfearedGodnorrespectedman.3 Andtherewasawidowinthatcitywhokeptcomingtohimandsaying,‘Givemejusticeagainstmyadversary.’4 Forawhileherefused,butafterwardhesaidtohimself,^u‘ThoughIneitherfearGodnorrespectman,5 yetbecausethiswidowkeepsbotheringme,Iwillgiveherjustice,sothatshewillnotbeatmedownbyhercontinualcoming.’”6 AndtheLordsaid,“Hearwhattheunrighteousjudgesays.7 And^vwillnotGodgivejusticeto^whiselect,^xwhocrytohimdayandnight?^yzWillhedelaylongoverthem?8 Itellyou,hewillgivejusticetothem^aspeedily.Nevertheless,whentheSonofMancomes,^bwillhefindfaithonearth?”

The Pharisee and the Tax Collector

9 Healsotoldthisparabletosome^cwhotrusted^dinthemselvesthattheywererighteous,^eandtreatedotherswithcontempt:10 “Twomen^fwentupintothetempletopray,oneaPhariseeandtheotherataxcollector.11 ThePharisee,^gstandingbyhimself,prayed^1hthus:‘God,IthankyouthatIamnotlikeothermen,extortioners,unjust,adulterers,orevenlikethistaxcollector.12 ⁱIfasttwiceaweek;^jIgivetithesofallthatIget.’13 Butthetaxcollector,^gstandingfaroff,^kwouldnotevenliftuphiseyestoheaven,but^lbeathisbreast,saying,‘God,^mbemercifultome,asinner!’14 Itellyou,thismanwentdowntohishousejustified,ratherthantheother.Forⁿeveryonewhoexaltshimselfwillbehumbled,buttheonewhohumbleshimselfwillbeexalted.”
