13 Nowⁿbefore^otheFeastofthePassover,whenJesusknewthat^phishourhadcome^qtodepartoutofthisworldtotheFather,^rhavingloved^shisownwhowereintheworld,helovedthemtotheend.2 Duringsupper,when^tthedevilhadalreadyputitintotheheartofJudasIscariot,Simon’sson,tobetrayhim,3 Jesus,knowing^uthattheFatherhadgivenallthingsintohishands,andthat^vhehadcomefromGodand^wwasgoingbacktoGod,4 rosefromsupper.Helaidasidehisoutergarments,andtakingatowel,^xtieditaroundhiswaist.5 Thenhe^ypouredwaterintoabasinandbegantowashthedisciples’feetandtowipethemwiththetowelthatwaswrappedaroundhim.6 HecametoSimonPeter,whosaidtohim,“Lord,doyouwashmyfeet?”7 ^zJesusansweredhim,“WhatIamdoing^ayoudonotunderstandnow,butafterwardyouwillunderstand.”8 ^bPetersaidtohim,“Youshallneverwashmyfeet.”Jesusansweredhim,^c“IfIdonotwashyou,youhavenosharewithme.”9 SimonPetersaidtohim,“Lord,notmyfeetonlybutalsomyhandsandmyhead!”10 Jesussaidtohim,“Theonewhohasbatheddoesnotneedtowash,^dexceptforhisfeet,¹butiscompletelyclean.And^eyou²areclean,^fbutnoteveryoneofyou.”11 ^gForheknewwhowastobetrayhim;thatwaswhyhesaid,“Notallofyouareclean.”

12 Whenhehadwashedtheirfeetand^hputonhisoutergarmentsandresumedhisplace,hesaidtothem,ⁱ“DoyouunderstandwhatIhavedonetoyou?13 ^jYoucallme^kTeacherandLord,andyouareright,forsoIam.14 IfIthen,yourLordandTeacher,havewashedyourfeet,^lyoualsooughttowashoneanother’sfeet.15 ForIhavegivenyouanexample,^mthatyoualsoshoulddojustasIhavedonetoyou.16 Truly,truly,Isaytoyou,ⁿaservant³isnotgreaterthanhismaster,norisamessengergreaterthantheonewhosenthim.17 Ifyouknowthesethings,^oblessedareyouifyoudothem.18 ^pIamnotspeakingofallofyou;Iknow^qwhomIhavechosen.But^rtheScripturewillbefulfilled,^4s‘Hewhoatemybreadhasliftedhisheelagainstme.’19 ^tIamtellingyouthisnow,beforeittakesplace,thatwhenitdoestakeplaceyoumaybelievethatIamhe.20 Truly,truly,Isaytoyou,^uwhoeverreceivestheoneIsendreceivesme,andwhoeverreceivesmereceivestheonewhosentme.”

One of You Will Betray Me

21 Aftersayingthesethings,^vJesuswastroubledinhisspirit,andtestified,^w“Truly,truly,Isaytoyou,^xoneofyouwillbetrayme.”22 ^yThediscipleslookedatoneanother,uncertainofwhomhespoke.23 ^zOneofhisdisciples,whomJesusloved,wasrecliningattable^aatJesus’side,⁵24 soSimonPetermotionedtohimtoaskJesus⁶ofwhomhewasspeaking.25 ^bSothatdisciple,^cleaningbackagainstJesus,saidtohim,“Lord,whoisit?”26 Jesusanswered,^d“ItishetowhomIwillgivethismorselofbread^ewhenIhavedippedit.”Sowhenhehaddippedthemorsel,^fhegaveittoJudas,^gthesonofSimonIscariot.27 Thenafterhehadtakenthemorsel,^hSatanenteredintohim.Jesussaidtohim,ⁱ“Whatyouaregoingtodo,doquickly.”28 Nownooneatthetableknewwhyhesaidthistohim.29 Somethoughtthat,^jbecauseJudashadthemoneybag,Jesuswastellinghim,“Buywhatweneed^kforthefeast,”orthatheshould^lgivesomethingtothepoor.30 So,afterreceivingthemorselofbread,heimmediatelywentout.^mAnditwasnight.

A New Commandment

31 Whenhehadgoneout,Jesussaid,ⁿ“NowistheSonofManglorified,and^oGodisglorifiedinhim.32 IfGodisglorifiedinhim,^pGodwillalsoglorifyhiminhimself,and^qglorifyhimatonce.33 Littlechildren,^ryetalittlewhileIamwithyou.Youwillseekme,andjust^sasIsaidtotheJews,sonowIalsosaytoyou,‘WhereIamgoingyoucannotcome.’34 ^tAnewcommandment^uIgivetoyou,^vthatyouloveoneanother:^wjustasIhavelovedyou,youalsoaretoloveoneanother.35 ^xBythisallpeoplewillknowthatyouaremydisciples,ifyouhaveloveforoneanother.”

Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial

36 SimonPetersaidtohim,“Lord,whereareyougoing?”^yJesusansweredhim,“WhereIamgoing^zyoucannotfollowmenow,^abutyouwillfollowafterward.”37 ^bPetersaidtohim,“Lord,whycanInotfollowyounow?Iwilllaydownmylifeforyou.”38 Jesusanswered,“Willyoulaydownyourlifeforme?Truly,truly,Isaytoyou,^ctheroosterwillnotcrowtillyouhavedeniedmethreetimes.

I Am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life

14 ^d“Letnotyourheartsbetroubled.^eBelieveinGod;¹believealsoinme.2 In^fmyFather’shousearemanyrooms.Ifitwerenotso,wouldIhavetoldyouthat^gIgotoprepareaplaceforyou?²3 AndifIgoandprepareaplaceforyou,Iwillcomeagainandwilltakeyou^htomyself,thatⁱwhereIamyoumaybealso.4 AndyouknowthewaytowhereIamgoing.”³5 ^jThomassaidtohim,“Lord,^kwedonotknowwhereyouaregoing.Howcanweknowtheway?”6 Jesussaidtohim,“Iam^ltheway,and^mthetruth,andⁿthelife.NoonecomestotheFatherexceptthroughme.7 ^oIfyouhadknownme,youwouldhave^pknownmyFatheralso.⁴Fromnowonyoudoknowhimand^qhaveseenhim.”

8 ^rPhilipsaidtohim,“Lord,^sshowustheFather,anditisenoughforus.”9 Jesussaidtohim,“HaveIbeenwithyousolong,andyoustilldonotknowme,Philip?^tWhoeverhasseenmehasseentheFather.Howcanyousay,‘ShowustheFather’?10 Doyounotbelievethat^uIamintheFatherandtheFatherisinme?ThewordsthatIsaytoyou^vIdonotspeakonmyownauthority,buttheFatherwhodwellsinmedoeshisworks.11 Believemethat^uIamintheFatherandtheFatherisinme,orelse^wbelieveonaccountoftheworksthemselves.

12 “Truly,truly,Isaytoyou,^xwhoeverbelievesinmewillalsodotheworksthatIdo;andgreaterworksthanthesewillhedo,becauseI^yamgoingtotheFather.13 ^zWhateveryouaskinmyname,thisIwilldo,that^atheFathermaybeglorifiedintheSon.14 ^zIfyouaskme⁵anythinginmyname,Iwilldoit.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 ^b“Ifyouloveme,youwill^ckeepmycommandments.16 AndIwillasktheFather,andhewillgiveyouanother^dHelper,⁶tobewithyouforever,17 even^etheSpiritoftruth,^fwhomtheworldcannotreceive,becauseitneitherseeshimnorknowshim.Youknowhim,forhedwellswithyouand^gwillbe⁷inyou.

18 “Iwillnotleaveyouasorphans;^hIwillcometoyou.19 ⁱYetalittlewhileandtheworldwillseemenomore,but^jyouwillseeme.^kBecauseIlive,youalsowilllive.20 ^lInthatdayyouwillknowthat^mIaminmyFather,andⁿyouinme,and^oIinyou.21 ^pWhoeverhasmycommandmentsand^qkeepsthem,heitiswholovesme.And^rhewholovesme^swillbelovedbymyFather,andIwilllovehimand^tmanifestmyselftohim.”22 ^uJudas(notIscariot)saidtohim,“Lord,howisit^vthatyouwillmanifestyourselftous,andnottotheworld?”23 Jesusansweredhim,^w“Ifanyonelovesme,hewillkeepmyword,andmyFatherwilllovehim,and^xwewillcometohimand^ymakeourhomewithhim.24 Whoeverdoesnotlovemedoesnotkeepmywords.And^zthewordthatyouhearisnotminebuttheFather’swhosentme.

25 “ThesethingsIhavespokentoyouwhileIamstillwithyou.26 Butthe^aHelper,theHolySpirit,^bwhomtheFatherwillsendinmyname,^chewillteachyouallthingsand^dbringtoyourremembranceallthatIhavesaidtoyou.27 ^ePeaceIleavewithyou;^fmypeaceIgivetoyou.NotastheworldgivesdoIgivetoyou.^gLetnotyourheartsbetroubled,neither^hletthembeafraid.28 ⁱYouheardmesaytoyou,^j‘Iamgoingaway,andIwillcometoyou.’Ifyoulovedme,youwouldhaverejoiced,becauseI^kamgoingtotheFather,for^ltheFatherisgreaterthanI.29 And^mnowIhavetoldyoubeforeittakesplace,sothatwhenitdoestakeplaceyoumaybelieve.30 Iwillnolongertalkmuchwithyou,forⁿtherulerofthisworldiscoming.^oHehasnoclaimonme,31 butIdo^pastheFatherhascommandedme,^qsothattheworldmayknowthatIlovetheFather.Rise,letusgofromhere.

I Am the True Vine

15 “Iamthe^rtruevine,andmyFatheris^sthevinedresser.2 ^tEverybranchinmethatdoesnotbearfruit^uhetakesaway,andeverybranchthatdoesbearfruitheprunes,^vthatitmaybearmorefruit.3 Already^wyouareclean^xbecauseofthewordthatIhavespokentoyou.4 ^yAbide^zinme,andIinyou.Asthebranchcannotbearfruitbyitself,unlessitabidesinthevine,neithercanyou,unlessyouabideinme.5 Iamthevine;^ayouarethebranches.WhoeverabidesinmeandIinhim,heitisthat^bbearsmuchfruit,forapartfrommeyoucandonothing.6 Ifanyonedoesnotabideinme,^cheisthrownawaylikeabranchandwithers;^dandthebranchesaregathered,thrownintothefire,andburned.7 If^eyouabideinme,andmywordsabideinyou,^faskwhateveryouwish,anditwillbedoneforyou.8 ^gBythismyFatherisglorified,thatyou^hbearmuchfruitandsoprovetobemydisciples.9 ⁱAstheFatherhaslovedme,^jsohaveIlovedyou.Abideinmylove.10 ^kIfyoukeepmycommandments,youwillabideinmylove,justas^lIhavekept^mmyFather’scommandmentsandabideinhislove.11 ThesethingsIhavespokentoyou,ⁿthatmyjoymaybeinyou,andthat^oyourjoymaybefull.

12 ^p“Thisismycommandment,thatyouloveoneanotherasIhavelovedyou.13 ^qGreaterlovehasnoonethanthis,^rthatsomeonelaydownhislifeforhisfriends.14 Youare^smyfriends^tifyoudowhatIcommandyou.15 ^uNolongerdoIcallyouservants,¹fortheservant^wdoesnotknowwhathismasterisdoing;butIhavecalledyoufriends,for^xallthatIhaveheardfrommyFather^yIhavemadeknowntoyou.16 Youdidnotchooseme,but^zIchoseyouandappointedyouthatyoushouldgoand^abearfruitandthatyourfruitshouldabide,sothat^bwhateveryouasktheFatherinmyname,hemaygiveittoyou.17 ThesethingsIcommandyou,^csothatyouwillloveoneanother.

The Hatred of the World

18 ^d“Iftheworldhatesyou,knowthatithashatedmebeforeithatedyou.19 ^eIfyouwereoftheworld,theworldwouldloveyouasitsown;butbecause^fyouarenotoftheworld,butIchoseyououtoftheworld,thereforetheworldhatesyou.20 RememberthewordthatIsaidtoyou:^g‘Aservantisnotgreaterthanhismaster.’Iftheypersecutedme,^htheywillalsopersecuteyou.ⁱIftheykeptmyword,theywillalsokeepyours.21 But^jallthesethingstheywilldotoyou^konaccountofmyname,^lbecausetheydonotknowhimwhosentme.22 IfIhadnotcomeandspokentothem,^mtheywouldnothavebeenguiltyofsin,²butnowtheyhavenoexcusefortheirsin.23 ⁿWhoeverhatesmehatesmyFatheralso.24 ^oIfIhadnotdoneamongthemtheworksthatnooneelsedid,^mtheywouldnotbeguiltyofsin,butnowtheyhave^pseenandhatedbothmeandmyFather.25 But^qthewordthatiswrittenintheirLawmustbefulfilled:^r‘Theyhatedmewithoutacause.’

26 “But^swhentheHelpercomes,whomIwillsendtoyoufromtheFather,theSpiritoftruth,whoproceedsfromtheFather,^thewillbearwitnessaboutme.27 And^uyoualsowillbearwitness,^vbecauseyouhavebeenwithme^wfromthebeginning.

16 “Ihavesaidallthesethingstoyoutokeepyoufromfallingaway.2 ^xTheywillputyououtofthesynagogues.Indeed,^ythehouriscomingwhen^zwhoeverkillsyouwillthinkheisofferingservicetoGod.3 Andtheywilldothesethings^abecausetheyhavenotknowntheFather,norme.4 But^bIhavesaidthesethingstoyou,thatwhen^ctheirhourcomesyoumayrememberthatItoldthemtoyou.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

“Ididnotsaythesethingstoyoufromthebeginning,^dbecauseIwaswithyou.5 Butnow^eIamgoingtohimwhosentme,and^fnoneofyouasksme,‘Whereareyougoing?’6 ButbecauseIhavesaidthesethingstoyou,^gsorrowhasfilledyourheart.7 Nevertheless,Itellyouthetruth:itistoyouradvantagethatIgoaway,for^hifIdonotgoaway,ⁱtheHelperwillnotcometoyou.But^jif^kIgo,^lIwillsendhimtoyou.8 ^mAndwhenhecomes,hewillⁿconvicttheworldconcerningsinandrighteousnessandjudgment:9 concerningsin,^obecausetheydonotbelieveinme;10 ^pconcerningrighteousness,^qbecauseIgototheFather,andyouwillseemenolonger;11 ^rconcerningjudgment,becausetherulerofthisworld^sisjudged.

12 “Istillhavemanythingstosaytoyou,butyoucannotbearthemnow.13 When^ttheSpiritoftruthcomes,^uhewill^vguideyouintoallthetruth,forhewillnotspeakonhisownauthority,but^wwhateverhehearshewillspeak,andhewilldeclaretoyouthethingsthataretocome.14 Hewill^xglorifyme,forhewilltakewhatismineanddeclareittoyou.15 ^yAllthattheFatherhasismine;^zthereforeIsaidthathewilltakewhatismineanddeclareittoyou.

Your Sorrow Will Turn into Joy

16 ^a“Alittlewhile,andyouwillseemenolonger;and^bagainalittlewhile,andyouwillseeme.”17 So^csomeofhisdisciplessaidtooneanother,“Whatisthisthathesaystous,^d‘Alittlewhile,andyouwillnotseeme,andagainalittlewhile,andyouwillseeme’;and,^e‘becauseIamgoingtotheFather’?”18 Sotheyweresaying,“Whatdoeshemeanby‘alittlewhile’?^fWedonotknowwhatheistalkingabout.”19 ^gJesusknewthattheywantedtoaskhim,sohesaidtothem,“Isthiswhatyouareaskingyourselves,whatImeantbysaying,‘Alittlewhileandyouwillnotseeme,andagainalittlewhileandyouwillseeme’?20 Truly,truly,Isaytoyou,^hyouwillweepandlament,butⁱtheworldwillrejoice.Youwillbesorrowful,but^jyoursorrowwillturnintojoy.21 ^kWhenawomanisgivingbirth,shehassorrowbecauseherhourhascome,butwhenshehasdeliveredthebaby,shenolongerrememberstheanguish,forjoythatahumanbeinghasbeenbornintotheworld.22 ^lSoalsoyouhavesorrownow,but^mIwillseeyouagain,andⁿyourheartswillrejoice,andnoonewilltakeyourjoyfromyou.23 ^oInthatdayyouwill^pasknothingofme.Truly,truly,Isaytoyou,^qwhateveryouaskoftheFatherinmyname,^rhewillgiveittoyou.24 Untilnowyouhaveaskednothinginmyname.^sAsk,andyouwillreceive,^tthatyourjoymaybefull.

I Have Overcome the World

25 “Ihavesaidthesethingstoyouinfiguresofspeech.^uThehouriscomingwhenIwillnolongerspeaktoyouinfiguresofspeechbutwilltellyouplainlyabouttheFather.26 Inthatdayyouwillaskinmyname,andIdonotsaytoyouthatIwillasktheFatheronyourbehalf;27 ^vfortheFatherhimselflovesyou,because^wyouhavelovedmeand^xhavebelievedthatIcamefromGod.¹28 ^yIcamefromtheFatherandhavecomeintotheworld,andnow^zIamleavingtheworldandgoingtotheFather.”

29 Hisdisciplessaid,“Ah,nowyouarespeakingplainlyandnot^ausingfigurativespeech!30 Nowweknowthat^byouknowallthingsanddonotneedanyonetoquestionyou;thisiswhywebelievethat^cyoucamefromGod.”31 Jesusansweredthem,“Doyounowbelieve?32 Behold,^dthehouriscoming,indeedithascome,when^eyouwillbescattered,eachtohisownhome,and^fwillleavemealone.^gYetIamnotalone,fortheFatheriswithme.33 Ihavesaidthesethingstoyou,that^hinmeyoumayhavepeace.ⁱIntheworldyouwillhave^jtribulation.But^ktakeheart;^lIhaveovercometheworld.”

The High Priestly Prayer

17 WhenJesushadspokenthesewords,^mhelifteduphiseyestoheaven,andsaid,“Father,ⁿthehourhascome;^oglorifyyourSonthattheSonmay^pglorifyyou,2 since^qyouhavegivenhimauthorityoverallflesh,^rtogiveeternallifetoall^swhomyouhavegivenhim.3 ^tAndthisiseternallife,^uthattheyknowyou,^vtheonly^wtrueGod,and^xJesusChristwhomyouhavesent.4 I^yglorifiedyouonearth,^zhavingaccomplishedtheworkthatyougavemetodo.5 Andnow,Father,^aglorifymeinyourownpresencewiththeglory^bthatIhadwithyou^cbeforetheworldexisted.

6 ^d“Ihavemanifestedyournametothepeople^ewhomyougavemeoutoftheworld.^fYourstheywere,andyougavethemtome,andtheyhavekeptyourword.7 Nowtheyknowthateverything^fthatyouhavegivenmeisfromyou.8 ForIhavegiventhem^gthewordsthatyougaveme,andtheyhavereceivedthemandhavecometoknowintruththat^hIcamefromyou;andⁱtheyhavebelievedthatyousentme.9 Iamprayingforthem.^jIamnotprayingfortheworldbutforthose^kwhomyouhavegivenme,for^ltheyareyours.10 ^mAllmineareyours,andyoursaremine,andⁿIamglorifiedinthem.11 AndIamnolongerintheworld,but^otheyareintheworld,and^pIamcomingtoyou.^qHolyFather,^rkeeptheminyourname,^swhichyouhavegivenme,^tthattheymaybeone,^uevenasweareone.12 ^vWhileIwaswiththem,Ikepttheminyourname,whichyouhavegivenme.Ihave^wguardedthem,and^xnotoneofthemhasbeenlostexcept^ythesonofdestruction,^zthattheScripturemightbefulfilled.13 Butnow^aIamcomingtoyou,andthesethingsIspeakintheworld,thattheymayhave^bmyjoyfulfilledinthemselves.14 ^cIhavegiventhemyourword,and^dtheworldhashatedthem^ebecausetheyarenotoftheworld,^fjustasIamnotoftheworld.15 I^gdonotaskthatyou^htakethemoutoftheworld,butthatyouⁱkeepthemfrom^jtheevilone.¹16 ^kTheyarenotoftheworld,justasIamnotoftheworld.17 ^lSanctifythem²inthetruth;^myourwordistruth.18 ⁿAsyousentmeintotheworld,soIhavesentthemintotheworld.19 And^ofortheirsake^pIconsecratemyself,³thattheyalso^qmaybesanctified⁴intruth.
