5 NowqJesuslovedMarthaandhersisterandLazarus.6 So,whenheheardthatLazarus1wasill,rhestayedtwodayslongerintheplacewherehewas.7 Thenafterthishesaidtothedisciples,s“LetusgotoJudeaagain.”8 Thedisciplessaidtohim,t“Rabbi,utheJewswerejustnowseekingtostoneyou,andareyougoingthereagain?”9 Jesusanswered,v“Aretherenottwelvehoursintheday?wIfanyonewalksintheday,hedoesnotstumble,becauseheseesthelightofthisworld.10 Butxifanyonewalksinthenight,hestumbles,becausethelightisnotxinhim.”11 Aftersayingthesethings,hesaidtothem,“OurfriendLazarusyhasfallenasleep,butIgotoawakenhim.”12 Thedisciplessaidtohim,“Lord,ifhehasfallenasleep,hewillrecover.”13 NowJesushadspokenofhisdeath,buttheythoughtthathemeanttakingrestinsleep.14 ThenJesustoldthemplainly,“Lazarushasdied,15 andforyoursakeIamgladthatIwasnotthere,sothatyoumaybelieve.Butletusgotohim.”16 zSoThomas,calledtheTwin,2saidtohisfellowdisciples,“Letusalsogo,athatwemaydiewithhim.”

28 Whenshehadsaidthis,shewentandcalledhersisterMary,sayinginprivate,r“TheTeacherishereandiscallingforyou.”29 Andwhensheheardit,sherosequicklyandwenttohim.30 NowJesushadnotyetcomeintothevillage,butwasstillintheplacewhereMarthahadmethim.31 WhentheJewsswhowerewithherinthehouse,consolingher,sawMaryrisequicklyandgoout,theyfollowedher,supposingthatshewasgoingtothetombtoweepthere.32 NowwhenMarycametowhereJesuswasandsawhim,shefellathisfeet,sayingtohim,t“Lord,ifyouhadbeenhere,mybrotherwouldnothavedied.”33 WhenJesussawherweeping,andtheJewswhohadcomewithheralsoweeping,heuwasdeeplymoved5inhisspiritandvgreatlytroubled.34 Andhesaid,“Wherehaveyoulaidhim?”Theysaidtohim,“Lord,comeandsee.”35 wJesuswept.36 SotheJewssaid,“Seexhowhelovedhim!”37 Butsomeofthemsaid,“Couldnotheywhoopenedtheeyesoftheblindmanzalsohavekeptthismanfromdying?”

45 nManyoftheJewstherefore,owhohadcomewithMaryandphadseenwhathedid,believedinhim,46 butsomeofthemwenttothePhariseesandtoldthemwhatJesushaddone.47 SothechiefpriestsandthePhariseesqgatheredrthecouncilandsaid,s“Whatarewetodo?Forthismanperformsmanysigns.48 Ifwelethimgoonlikethis,everyonewillbelieveinhim,andttheRomanswillcomeandtakeawaybothouruplaceandournation.”49 Butoneofthem,vCaiaphas,wwhowashighpriestthatyear,saidtothem,“Youknownothingatall.50 Nordoyouunderstandthatxitisbetterforyouthatonemanshoulddieforthepeople,notthatthewholenationshouldperish.”51 Hedidnotsaythisofhisownaccord,butybeinghighpriestthatyearzheprophesiedthatJesuswoulddieforthenation,52 andanotforthenationonly,butalsobtogatherintoonethechildrenofGodwhoarescatteredabroad.53 Sofromthatdayontheycmadeplanstoputhimtodeath.
54 JesusthereforednolongerwalkedopenlyamongtheJews,butwentfromtheretotheregionnearthewilderness,toatowncalledEphraim,andtherehestayedwiththedisciples.
55 NowethePassoveroftheJewswasathand,andfmanywentupfromthecountrytoJerusalembeforethePassovergtopurifythemselves.56 hTheywerelookingfor6Jesusandsayingtooneanotherastheystoodinthetemple,“Whatdoyouthink?Thathewillnotcometothefeastatall?”57 NowthechiefpriestsandthePhariseeshadgivenordersthatifanyoneknewwherehewas,heshouldletthemknow,sothattheymightarresthim.

12 SixdaysbeforeithePassover,jJesusthereforecametoBethany,kwhereLazaruswas,whomJesushadraisedfromthedead.2 Sotheygaveadinnerforhimthere.lMarthaserved,andLazaruswasoneofthoserecliningwithhimattable.3 mMarythereforetookapound1ofexpensiveointmentmadefrompurenard,andanointedthefeetofJesusandwipedhisfeetwithherhair.Thehousewasfilledwiththefragranceoftheperfume.4 ButJudasIscariot,oneofhisdisciples(hewhowasabouttobetrayhim),said,5 “Whywasthisointmentnotsoldforthreehundreddenarii2andngiventothepoor?”6 Hesaidthis,notbecausehecaredaboutthepoor,butbecausehewasathief,andnhavingchargeofthemoneybagheusedtohelphimselftowhatwasputintoit.7 Jesussaid,“Leaveheralone,sothatshemaykeepit3forthedayofmyburial.8 Forthepooryoualwayshavewithyou,butyoudonotalwayshaveme.”
The Plot to Kill Lazarus
9 WhenthelargecrowdoftheJewslearnedthatJesus4wasthere,theycame,notonlyonaccountofhimbutalsotoseeLazarus,owhomhehadraisedfromthedead.10 pSothechiefpriestsmadeplanstoputLazarustodeathaswell,11 becauseqonaccountofhimmanyoftheJewsweregoingawayandbelievinginJesus.
The Triumphal Entry
12 ThenextdayrthelargecrowdthathadcometothefeastheardthatJesuswascomingtoJerusalem.13 Sotheytookbranchesofspalmtreesandwentouttomeethim,cryingout,t“Hosanna!BlessedisuhewhocomesinthenameoftheLord,evenvtheKingofIsrael!”14 AndJesusfoundayoungdonkeyandsatonit,justasitiswritten,
15 w“Fearnot,daughterofZion;
behold,yourkingiscoming,
sittingonadonkey’scolt!”
16 xHisdisciplesdidnotunderstandthesethingsatfirst,butywhenJesuswasglorified,thenztheyrememberedthatthesethingshadbeenwrittenabouthimandhadbeendonetohim.17 aThecrowdthathadbeenwithhimwhenhecalledLazarusoutofthetombandraisedhimfromthedeadcontinuedtobearwitness.18 Thereasonwhythecrowdwenttomeethimbwasthattheyheardhehaddonethissign.19 SothePhariseessaidtooneanother,c“Youseethatyouaregainingnothing.Look,dtheworldhasgoneafterhim.”
Some Greeks Seek Jesus
20 NoweamongthosewhowentuptoworshipatthefeastweresomefGreeks.21 SothesecametogPhilip,whowasfromBethsaidainGalilee,andaskedhim,“Sir,wewishtoseeJesus.”22 PhilipwentandtoldhAndrew;AndrewandPhilipwentandtoldJesus.23 AndJesusansweredthem,i“ThehourhascomejfortheSonofMantobeglorified.24 Truly,truly,Isaytoyou,kunlessagrainofwheatfallsintotheearthanddies,itremainsalone;butifitdies,itbearsmuchfruit.25 lWhoeverloveshislifelosesit,andmwhoevernhateshislifeinthisworldwillkeepitforeternallife.26 Ifanyoneservesme,hemustofollowme;andpwhereIam,therewillmyservantbealso.qIfanyoneservesme,rtheFatherwillhonorhim.
The Son of Man Must Be Lifted Up
27 s“Nowismysoultroubled.AndwhatshallIsay?‘Father,tsavemefromuthishour’?ButvforthispurposeIhavecometouthishour.28 Father,glorifyyourname.”Thenwavoicecamefromheaven:“Ihaveglorifiedit,andIwillglorifyitagain.”29 Thecrowdthatstoodthereandhearditsaidthatithadthundered.Otherssaid,x“Anangelhasspokentohim.”30 Jesusanswered,y“Thisvoicehascomeforyoursake,notmine.31 zNowisthejudgmentofthisworld;nowwillatherulerofthisworldbbecastout.32 AndI,cwhenIamliftedupfromtheearth,dwilldraweallpeopletomyself.”33 Hesaidthisftoshowbywhatkindofdeathhewasgoingtodie.34 Sothecrowdansweredhim,“WehaveheardfromtheLawthatgtheChristremainsforever.HowcanyousaythaththeSonofManmustbeliftedup?WhoisthisSonofMan?”35 SoJesussaidtothem,i“Thelightisamongyoujforalittlewhilelonger.kWalkwhileyouhavethelight,lestdarknesslovertakeyou.mTheonewhowalksinthedarknessdoesnotknowwhereheisgoing.36 Whileyouhavethelight,believeinthelight,thatyoumaybecomensonsoflight.”
The Unbelief of the People
WhenJesushadsaidthesethings,hedepartedandhidhimselffromthem.37 Thoughhehaddonesomanysignsbeforethem,theystilldidnotbelieveinhim,38 osothatthewordspokenbytheprophetIsaiahmightbefulfilled:
p“Lord,whohasbelievedwhatheheardfromus,
andtowhomhasthearmoftheLordbeenrevealed?”
39 Thereforetheyqcouldnotbelieve.ForagainIsaiahsaid,
40 r“Hehasblindedtheireyes
andshardenedtheirheart,
lesttheyseewiththeireyes,
andunderstandwiththeirheart,andturn,
andIwouldhealthem.”
41 Isaiahsaidthesethingsbecausethesawhisgloryanduspokeofhim.42 Nevertheless,vmanyevenoftheauthoritiesbelievedinhim,butwforfearofthePhariseestheydidnotxconfessit,sothattheywouldnotbexputoutofthesynagogue;43 yfortheylovedtheglorythatcomesfrommanmorethantheglorythatcomesfromGod.
Jesus Came to Save the World
44 AndJesuscriedoutandsaid,z“Whoeverbelievesinme,believesnotinmebutainhimwhosentme.45 Andbwhoevercseesmeseeshimwhosentme.46 dIhavecomeintotheworldaslight,sothatwhoeverbelievesinmemaynotremainindarkness.47 Ifanyoneehearsmywordsanddoesnotkeepthem,fIdonotjudgehim;forgIdidnotcometojudgetheworldbuttosavetheworld.48 hTheonewhorejectsmeanddoesnotreceivemywordshasajudge;ithewordthatIhavespokenwilljudgehimjonthelastday.49 ForkIhavenotspokenonmyownauthority,buttheFatherlwhosentmehashimselfgivenmemacommandment—whattosayandwhattospeak.50 AndIknowthathiscommandmentiseternallife.WhatIsay,therefore,IsayastheFatherhastoldme.”
