8 butJesuswenttotheMountofOlives.2 ^bEarlyinthemorninghecameagaintothetemple.Allthepeoplecametohim,and^chesatdownandtaughtthem.3 ThescribesandthePhariseesbroughtawomanwhohadbeencaughtinadultery,andplacingherinthemidst4 theysaidtohim,“Teacher,thiswomanhasbeencaughtintheactofadultery.5 Now^dintheLaw,Mosescommandedus^etostonesuchwomen.Sowhatdoyousay?”6 Thistheysaid^ftotesthim,^gthattheymighthavesomechargetobringagainsthim.Jesusbentdownandwrotewithhisfingerontheground.7 Andastheycontinuedtoaskhim,hestoodupandsaidtothem,^h“Lethimwhoiswithoutsinamongyouⁱbethefirsttothrowastoneather.”8 Andoncemorehebentdownandwroteontheground.9 Butwhentheyheardit,theywentawayonebyone,beginningwiththeolderones,andJesuswasleftalonewiththewomanstandingbeforehim.10 Jesusstoodupandsaidtoher,“Woman,wherearethey?Hasnoonecondemnedyou?”11 Shesaid,“Noone,Lord.”AndJesussaid,^j“NeitherdoIcondemnyou;go,andfromnowon^ksinnomore.”]]

I Am the Light of the World

12 ^lAgainJesusspoketothem,saying,^m“Iamthelightoftheworld.Whoeverⁿfollowsmewillnot^owalkindarkness,butwillhavethelightoflife.”13 SothePhariseessaidtohim,^p“Youarebearingwitnessaboutyourself;yourtestimonyisnottrue.”14 Jesusanswered,“EvenifIdobearwitnessaboutmyself,^qmytestimonyistrue,forIknow^rwhereIcamefromand^swhereIamgoing,but^tyoudonotknowwhereIcomefromorwhereIamgoing.15 ^uYoujudgeaccordingtotheflesh;^vIjudgenoone.16 YetevenifIdojudge,^wmyjudgmentistrue,for^xitisnotIalonewhojudge,butIandtheFather¹whosentme.17 ^yInyourLawitiswrittenthatthetestimonyoftwopeopleistrue.18 Iamtheonewhobearswitnessaboutmyself,and^ztheFatherwhosentmebearswitnessaboutme.”19 Theysaidtohimtherefore,“WhereisyourFather?”Jesusanswered,^a“YouknowneithermenormyFather.^bIfyouknewme,youwouldknowmyFatheralso.”20 Thesewordshespokein^cthetreasury,ashetaughtinthetemple;but^dnoonearrestedhim,because^ehishourhadnotyetcome.

21 Sohesaidtothemagain,^f“Iamgoingaway,and^gyouwillseekme,and^hyouwilldieinyoursin.WhereIamgoing,youcannotcome.”22 SotheJewssaid,ⁱ“Willhekillhimself,sincehesays,‘WhereIamgoing,youcannotcome’?”23 Hesaidtothem,^j“Youarefrombelow;Iamfromabove.^kYouareofthisworld;^lIamnotofthisworld.24 Itoldyouthatyou^mwoulddieinyoursins,forⁿunlessyoubelievethat^oIamheyouwilldieinyoursins.”25 Sotheysaidtohim,^p“Whoareyou?”Jesussaidtothem,“JustwhatIhavebeentellingyoufromthebeginning.26 Ihavemuchtosayaboutyouandmuchtojudge,but^qhewhosentmeistrue,andIdeclare^rtotheworld^swhatIhaveheardfromhim.”27 Theydidnotunderstandthat^thehadbeenspeakingtothemabouttheFather.28 SoJesussaidtothem,“Whenyouhave^ulifteduptheSonofMan,^vthenyouwillknowthat^wIamhe,andthat^xIdonothingonmyownauthority,but^yspeakjustastheFathertaughtme.29 And^zhewhosentmeiswithme.^zHehasnotleftmealone,for^aIalwaysdothethingsthatarepleasingtohim.”30 Ashewassayingthesethings,^bmanybelievedinhim.

The Truth Will Set You Free

31 SoJesussaidtotheJewswhohadbelievedhim,^c“Ifyouabideinmyword,youaretrulymydisciples,32 andyouwill^dknowthetruth,andthetruth^ewillsetyoufree.”33 Theyansweredhim,^f“WeareoffspringofAbrahamandhaveneverbeenenslavedtoanyone.Howisitthatyousay,‘Youwillbecomefree’?”

34 Jesusansweredthem,“Truly,truly,Isaytoyou,^geveryonewhopracticessinisaslave²tosin.35 ^hTheslavedoesnotremaininthehouseforever;ⁱthesonremainsforever.36 SoiftheSonsetsyoufree,youwillbefreeindeed.37 IknowthatyouareoffspringofAbraham;yet^jyouseektokillmebecausemywordfindsnoplaceinyou.38 ^kIspeakofwhatIhaveseenwithmyFather,andyoudowhatyouhaveheard^lfromyourfather.”

You Are of Your Father the Devil

39 Theyansweredhim,^m“Abrahamisourfather.”Jesussaidtothem,ⁿ“IfyouwereAbraham’schildren,youwouldbedoingtheworksAbrahamdid,40 butnow^oyouseektokillme,amanwhohastoldyouthetruth^pthatIheardfromGod.ThisisnotwhatAbrahamdid.41 Youaredoingtheworksyourfatherdid.”Theysaidtohim,^q“Wewerenotbornofsexualimmorality.Wehave^roneFather—evenGod.”42 Jesussaidtothem,^s“IfGodwereyourFather,youwouldloveme,for^tIcamefromGodand^uIamhere.^vIcamenotofmyownaccord,but^whesentme.43 ^xWhydoyounotunderstandwhatIsay?Itisbecauseyoucannot^ybeartohearmyword.44 ^zYouareofyourfatherthedevil,andyourwillistodoyourfather’sdesires.^aHewasamurdererfromthebeginning,and^bdoesnotstandinthetruth,becausethereisnotruthinhim.^cWhenhelies,hespeaksoutofhisowncharacter,forheisaliarandthefatheroflies.45 ButbecauseItellthetruth,youdonotbelieveme.46 Whichoneofyouconvictsmeofsin?IfItellthetruth,whydoyounotbelieveme?47 ^dWhoeverisofGodhearsthewordsofGod.^eThereasonwhyyoudonothearthemisthat^fyouarenotofGod.”

Before Abraham Was, I Am

Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind

9 Ashepassedby,hesawamanblindfrombirth.2 Andhisdisciplesaskedhim,^c“Rabbi,^dwhosinned,^ethismanor^fhisparents,thathewasbornblind?”3 Jesusanswered,“Itwasnotthatthismansinned,orhisparents,but^gthattheworksofGodmightbedisplayedinhim.4 Wemust^hworktheworksofhimwhosentmeⁱwhileitisday;nightiscoming,whennoonecanwork.5 AslongasIamintheworld,^jIamthelightoftheworld.”6 Havingsaidthesethings,^khespitonthegroundandmademudwiththesaliva.^lThenheanointedtheman’seyeswiththemud7 andsaidtohim,“Go,washin^mthepoolofSiloam”(whichmeansSent).Sohewentandwashedandⁿcamebackseeing.

8 Theneighborsandthosewhohadseenhimbeforeasabeggarweresaying,^o“Isthisnotthemanwhousedtositandbeg?”9 Somesaid,“Itishe.”Otherssaid,“No,butheislikehim.”Hekeptsaying,“Iamtheman.”10 Sotheysaidtohim,“Thenhowwereyoureyesopened?”11 Heanswered,^p“ThemancalledJesusmademudandanointedmyeyesandsaidtome,‘GotoSiloamandwash.’SoIwentandwashedandreceivedmysight.”12 Theysaidtohim,“Whereishe?”Hesaid,“Idonotknow.”

13 TheybroughttothePhariseesthemanwhohadformerlybeenblind.14 ^qNowitwasaSabbathdaywhenJesusmadethemudandopenedhiseyes.15 ^rSothePhariseesagainaskedhimhowhehadreceivedhissight.Andhesaidtothem,“Heputmudonmyeyes,andIwashed,andIsee.”16 SomeofthePhariseessaid,“Thismanisnot^sfromGod,^tforhedoesnotkeeptheSabbath.”Butotherssaid,^u“Howcanamanwhoisasinnerdosuchsigns?”And^vtherewasadivisionamongthem.17 Sotheysaidagaintotheblindman,“Whatdoyousayabouthim,sincehehasopenedyoureyes?”Hesaid,^w“Heisaprophet.”

18 ^xTheJews¹didnotbelievethathehadbeenblindandhadreceivedhissight,untiltheycalledtheparentsofthemanwhohadreceivedhissight19 andaskedthem,“Isthisyourson,whoyousaywasbornblind?Howthendoeshenowsee?”20 Hisparentsanswered,“Weknowthatthisisoursonandthathewasbornblind.21 Buthowhenowseeswedonotknow,nordoweknowwhoopenedhiseyes.Askhim;heisofage.Hewillspeakforhimself.”22 (Hisparentssaidthesethings^ybecausetheyfearedtheJews,for^ztheJewshadalreadyagreedthatifanyoneshould^aconfessJesus²tobeChrist,^bhewastobeputoutofthesynagogue.23 Thereforehisparentssaid,^c“Heisofage;askhim.”)

24 Soforthesecondtimetheycalledthemanwhohadbeenblindandsaidtohim,^d“GiveglorytoGod.Weknowthat^ethismanisasinner.”25 Heanswered,“WhetherheisasinnerIdonotknow.OnethingIdoknow,thatthoughI^fwasblind,nowIsee.”26 Theysaidtohim,“Whatdidhedotoyou?Howdidheopenyoureyes?”27 Heansweredthem,^g“Ihavetoldyoualready,andyouwouldnotlisten.Whydoyouwanttohearitagain?Doyoualsowanttobecomehisdisciples?”28 Andtheyreviledhim,saying,“Youarehisdisciple,but^hwearedisciplesofMoses.29 WeknowthatGodhasspokentoMoses,butasforthisman,ⁱwedonotknowwherehecomesfrom.”30 Themananswered,“Why,thisis^janamazingthing!^kYoudonotknowwherehecomesfrom,andyetheopenedmyeyes.31 Weknowthat^lGoddoesnotlistentosinners,but^mifanyoneisaworshiperofGodanddoeshiswill,Godlistenstohim.32 Neversincetheworldbeganhasitbeenheardthatanyoneopenedtheeyesofamanbornblind.33 ⁿIfthismanwerenotfromGod,hecoulddonothing.”34 Theyansweredhim,^o“Youwereborninuttersin,andwouldyouteachus?”Andthey^pcasthimout.

35 Jesusheardthattheyhadcasthimout,andhavingfoundhimhesaid,“Doyoubelievein^qtheSonofMan?”³36 Heanswered,^r“Andwhoishe,sir,thatImaybelieveinhim?”37 Jesussaidtohim,“Youhaveseenhim,and^sitishewhoisspeakingtoyou.”38 Hesaid,“Lord,Ibelieve,”andheworshipedhim.39 Jesussaid,^t“ForjudgmentIcameintothisworld,^uthatthosewhodonotseemaysee,and^vthosewhoseemaybecomeblind.”40 SomeofthePhariseesnearhimheardthesethings,andsaidtohim,^w“Arewealsoblind?”41 Jesussaidtothem,“Ifyouwereblind,^xyouwouldhavenoguilt;⁴butnowthatyousay,‘Wesee,’yourguiltremains.

I Am the Good Shepherd

10 “Truly,truly,Isaytoyou,hewhodoesnotenterthesheepfoldbythedoorbutclimbsinbyanotherway,thatmanisathiefandarobber.2 Buthewhoentersbythedooristheshepherdofthesheep.3 Tohimthegatekeeperopens.Thesheephearhisvoice,andhecallshisownsheepbynameandleadsthemout.4 Whenhehasbroughtoutallhisown,hegoesbeforethem,andthesheepfollowhim,fortheyknowhisvoice.5 ^yAstrangertheywillnotfollow,buttheywillfleefromhim,fortheydonotknowthevoiceofstrangers.”6 ThisfigureofspeechJesus^zusedwiththem,butthey^adidnotunderstandwhathewassayingtothem.

7 SoJesusagainsaidtothem,“Truly,truly,Isaytoyou,^bIamthedoorofthesheep.8 Allwhocamebeforemearethievesandrobbers,butthesheepdidnotlistentothem.9 Iamthedoor.Ifanyoneentersbyme,^chewillbesavedandwillgoinandoutand^dfindpasture.10 Thethiefcomesonlytostealand^ekillanddestroy.Icamethattheymayhavelifeandhaveitabundantly.11 ^fIamthegoodshepherd.Thegoodshepherd^glaysdownhislifeforthesheep.12 Hewhois^hahiredhandandnotashepherd,whodoesnotownthesheep,seesthewolfcomingandⁱleavesthesheepandflees,andthewolfsnatchesthemand^jscattersthem.13 Hefleesbecause^kheisahiredhandand^lcaresnothingforthesheep.14 ^mIamthegoodshepherd.ⁿIknowmyownand^omyownknowme,15 ^pjustastheFatherknowsmeandIknowtheFather;and^qIlaydownmylifeforthesheep.16 And^rIhaveothersheepthatarenotofthisfold.^sImustbringthemalso,and^ttheywilllistentomyvoice.Sotherewillbe^uoneflock,^voneshepherd.17 ^wForthisreasontheFatherlovesme,^xbecause^yIlaydownmylifethatImaytakeitupagain.18 ^zNoonetakesitfromme,but^yIlayitdown^aofmyownaccord.Ihaveauthoritytolayitdown,and^bIhaveauthoritytotakeitupagain.^cThischargeIhavereceivedfrommyFather.”

19 ^dTherewasagainadivisionamongtheJewsbecauseofthesewords.20 Manyofthemsaid,^e“Hehasademon,and^fisinsane;whylistentohim?”21 Otherssaid,“Thesearenotthewordsofonewhoisoppressedbyademon.^gCanademonopentheeyesoftheblind?”

I and the Father Are One

22 AtthattimetheFeastofDedicationtookplaceatJerusalem.Itwaswinter,23 andJesuswaswalkinginthetemple,^hinthecolonnadeofSolomon.24 SotheJewsgatheredaroundhimandsaidtohim,“Howlongwillyoukeepusinsuspense?IfyouareⁱtheChrist,^jtellusplainly.”25 Jesusansweredthem,“Itoldyou,andyoudonotbelieve.^kTheworksthatIdo^linmyFather’snamebearwitnessaboutme,26 but^myoudonotbelievebecauseyouarenotamongmysheep.27 ⁿMysheephearmyvoice,andIknowthem,andtheyfollowme.28 ^oIgivethemeternallife,and^ptheywillneverperish,and^qnoonewillsnatchthemoutofmyhand.29 MyFather,^rwhohasgiventhemtome,^1sisgreaterthanall,andnooneisabletosnatchthemoutof^ttheFather’shand.30 ^uIandtheFatherareone.”

31 ^vTheJewspickedupstonesagaintostonehim.32 Jesusansweredthem,“IhaveshownyoumanygoodworksfromtheFather;forwhichofthemareyougoingtostoneme?”33 TheJewsansweredhim,“Itisnotforagoodworkthatwearegoingtostoneyoubut^wforblasphemy,becauseyou,beingaman,^xmakeyourselfGod.”34 Jesusansweredthem,“Isitnotwrittenin^yyourLaw,^z‘Isaid,youaregods’?35 IfhecalledthemgodstowhomthewordofGodcame—andScripturecannotbe^abroken—36 doyousayofhimwhom^btheFatherconsecratedand^csentintotheworld,‘Youareblaspheming,’because^dIsaid,‘IamtheSonofGod’?37 ^eIfIamnotdoingtheworksofmyFather,thendonotbelieveme;38 butifIdothem,^feventhoughyoudonotbelieveme,believetheworks,thatyoumayknowandunderstandthat^gtheFatherisinmeandIamintheFather.”39 ^hAgaintheysoughttoarresthim,butheescapedfromtheirhands.

40 HewentawayagainacrosstheJordantotheplaceⁱwhereJohnhadbeenbaptizingatfirst,andthereheremained.41 Andmanycametohim.Andtheysaid,“Johndidnosign,but^jeverythingthatJohnsaidaboutthismanwastrue.”42 And^kmanybelievedinhimthere.

The Death of Lazarus

11 Nowacertainmanwasill,LazarusofBethany,thevillageof^lMaryandhersisterMartha.2 ^mItwasMarywhoanointedtheLordwithointmentandwipedhisfeetwithherhair,whosebrotherLazaruswasill.3 Sothesisterssenttohim,saying,“Lord,ⁿhewhomyouloveisill.”4 ButwhenJesusheardithesaid,^o“Thisillnessdoesnotleadtodeath.Itisfor^pthegloryofGod,sothattheSonofGodmaybeglorifiedthroughit.”

5 Now^qJesuslovedMarthaandhersisterandLazarus.6 So,whenheheardthatLazarus¹wasill,^rhestayedtwodayslongerintheplacewherehewas.7 Thenafterthishesaidtothedisciples,^s“LetusgotoJudeaagain.”8 Thedisciplessaidtohim,^t“Rabbi,^utheJewswerejustnowseekingtostoneyou,andareyougoingthereagain?”9 Jesusanswered,^v“Aretherenottwelvehoursintheday?^wIfanyonewalksintheday,hedoesnotstumble,becauseheseesthelightofthisworld.10 But^xifanyonewalksinthenight,hestumbles,becausethelightisnot^xinhim.”11 Aftersayingthesethings,hesaidtothem,“OurfriendLazarus^yhasfallenasleep,butIgotoawakenhim.”12 Thedisciplessaidtohim,“Lord,ifhehasfallenasleep,hewillrecover.”13 NowJesushadspokenofhisdeath,buttheythoughtthathemeanttakingrestinsleep.14 ThenJesustoldthemplainly,“Lazarushasdied,15 andforyoursakeIamgladthatIwasnotthere,sothatyoumaybelieve.Butletusgotohim.”16 ^zSoThomas,calledtheTwin,²saidtohisfellowdisciples,“Letusalsogo,^athatwemaydiewithhim.”
