11 Nowfaithistheassuranceofthingshopedfor,theconvictionof^ethingsnotseen.2 Forbyitthepeopleofoldreceivedtheircommendation.3 Byfaithweunderstandthattheuniversewascreatedby^fthewordofGod,sothatwhatisseenwasnotmadeoutof^gthingsthatarevisible.

4 Byfaith^hAbelofferedtoGodⁱamoreacceptablesacrificethanCain,throughwhichhewascommendedasrighteous,Godcommendinghimbyacceptinghisgifts.And^jthroughhisfaith,thoughhedied,he^kstillspeaks.5 Byfaith^lEnochwastakenupsothatheshouldnotseedeath,andhewasnotfound,becauseGodhadtakenhim.NowbeforehewastakenhewascommendedashavingpleasedGod.6 Andwithoutfaithitisimpossibletopleasehim,forwhoeverwoulddrawneartoGod^mmustbelievethatheexistsand^mthatherewardsthosewhoseekhim.7 ByfaithⁿNoah,beingwarnedbyGodconcerning^oeventsasyetunseen,inreverentfearconstructedanarkforthesavingofhishousehold.Bythishecondemnedtheworldandbecameanheirof^ptherighteousnessthatcomesbyfaith.

8 Byfaith^qAbrahamobeyedwhenhewascalledtogoouttoaplace^rthathewastoreceiveasaninheritance.Andhewentout,notknowingwherehewasgoing.9 Byfaithhewenttolivein^sthelandofpromise,asinaforeignland,^tlivingintents^uwithIsaacandJacob,heirswithhimofthesamepromise.10 Forhewaslookingforwardto^vthecitythathas^wfoundations,^xwhosedesignerandbuilderisGod.11 Byfaith^ySarahherselfreceivedpowertoconceive,evenwhenshewaspasttheage,sincesheconsidered^zhimfaithfulwhohadpromised.12 Thereforefromoneman,and^ahimasgoodasdead,wereborndescendants^basmanyasthestarsofheavenandasmanyastheinnumerablegrainsofsandbytheseashore.

13 Thesealldiedinfaith,^cnothavingreceivedthethingspromised,but^dhavingseenthemandgreetedthemfromafar,and^ehavingacknowledgedthattheywere^fstrangersandexilesontheearth.14 Forpeoplewhospeakthusmakeitclearthattheyareseekingahomeland.15 Iftheyhadbeenthinkingofthatlandfromwhichtheyhadgoneout,^gtheywouldhavehadopportunitytoreturn.16 Butasitis,theydesireabettercountry,thatis,aheavenlyone.ThereforeGodisnotashamed^htobecalledtheirGod,forⁱhehaspreparedforthemacity.

17 Byfaith^jAbraham,whenhewastested,offeredupIsaac,andhewhohadreceivedthepromiseswasintheactofofferinguphisonlyson,18 ofwhomitwassaid,^k“ThroughIsaacshallyouroffspringbenamed.”19 ^lHeconsideredthatGodwasableeventoraisehimfromthedead,fromwhich,figurativelyspeaking,hedidreceivehimback.20 Byfaith^mIsaacinvokedfutureblessingsonJacobandEsau.21 ByfaithⁿJacob,whendying,blessedeachofthesonsofJoseph,^obowinginworshipovertheheadofhisstaff.22 Byfaith^pJoseph,attheendofhislife,madementionoftheexodusoftheIsraelitesandgavedirectionsconcerninghisbones.

23 Byfaith^qMoses,whenhewasborn,washiddenforthreemonthsbyhisparents,becausetheysawthatthechildwasbeautiful,andtheywerenotafraidof^rtheking’sedict.24 ByfaithMoses,whenhewasgrownup,^srefusedtobecalledthesonofPharaoh’sdaughter,25 ^tchoosingrathertobemistreatedwiththepeopleofGodthantoenjoy^uthefleetingpleasuresofsin.26 ^vHeconsideredthereproachofChristgreaterwealththanthetreasuresofEgypt,forhewaslookingto^wthereward.27 Byfaithhe^xleftEgypt,^ynotbeingafraidoftheangeroftheking,forheendured^zasseeinghimwhoisinvisible.28 Byfaith^ahekeptthePassoverandsprinkledtheblood,sothattheDestroyerofthefirstbornmightnottouchthem.

29 Byfaith^bthepeoplecrossedtheRedSeaasondryland,buttheEgyptians,whentheyattemptedtodothesame,weredrowned.30 Byfaith^cthewallsofJerichofelldownaftertheyhadbeenencircledforsevendays.31 Byfaith^dRahabtheprostitutedidnotperishwiththosewhoweredisobedient,becauseshe^ehadgivenafriendlywelcometothespies.

32 AndwhatmoreshallIsay?Fortimewouldfailmetotellof^fGideon,^gBarak,^hSamson,ⁱJephthah,of^jDavidand^kSamuelandtheprophets—33 whothroughfaithconqueredkingdoms,enforcedjustice,obtainedpromises,^lstoppedthemouthsoflions,34 ^mquenchedthepoweroffire,escapedtheedgeofthesword,weremadestrongoutofweakness,ⁿbecamemightyinwar,ⁿputforeignarmiestoflight.35 ^oWomenreceivedbacktheirdeadbyresurrection.Someweretortured,refusingtoacceptrelease,sothattheymightriseagaintoabetterlife.36 Otherssufferedmockingandflogging,andeven^pchainsandimprisonment.37 ^qTheywerestoned,theyweresawnintwo,^1rtheywerekilledwiththesword.^sTheywentaboutinskinsofsheepandgoats,destitute,afflicted,mistreated—38 ofwhomtheworldwasnotworthy—^twanderingaboutindesertsandmountains,andindensandcavesoftheearth.

39 Andallthese,^uthoughcommendedthroughtheirfaith,^udidnotreceivewhatwaspromised,40 sinceGodhadprovidedsomethingbetterforus,^vthatapartfromustheyshouldnotbemadeperfect.

12 Therefore,sincewearesurroundedbysogreatacloudofwitnesses,letusalsolayasideeveryweight,and^wsinwhichclingssoclosely,and^xletusrun^ywithendurancetheracethatis^zsetbeforeus,2 lookingtoJesus,thefounderandperfecterofourfaith,^awhoforthejoythatwassetbeforehimenduredthecross,despising^btheshame,and^cisseatedattherighthandofthethroneofGod.

Do Not Grow Weary

3 ^dConsiderhimwhoenduredfromsinnerssuchhostilityagainsthimself,sothatyoumaynotgrowwearyor^efainthearted.4 Inyourstruggleagainstsinyouhavenotyetresistedtothepointofsheddingyourblood.5 Andhaveyouforgottentheexhortationthataddressesyouassons?

7 Itisfordisciplinethatyouhavetoendure.ⁱGodistreatingyouassons.Forwhatsonistherewhomhisfatherdoesnotdiscipline?8 Ifyouareleftwithoutdiscipline,^jinwhichallhaveparticipated,thenyouareillegitimatechildrenandnotsons.9 Besidesthis,wehavehadearthlyfatherswhodisciplinedusandwerespectedthem.Shallwenotmuchmorebesubjectto^ktheFatherofspirits^landlive?10 Fortheydisciplinedusforashorttimeasitseemedbesttothem,buthedisciplinesusforourgood,^mthatwemaysharehisholiness.11 ⁿForthemomentalldisciplineseemspainfulratherthanpleasant,butlaterityields^othepeacefulfruitofrighteousnesstothosewhohavebeentrainedbyit.

12 Therefore^pliftyourdroopinghandsandstrengthenyourweakknees,13 and^qmakestraightpathsforyourfeet,sothatwhatislamemaynotbeputoutofjoint^rbutratherbehealed.14 ^sStriveforpeacewitheveryone,andforthe^tholiness^uwithoutwhichnoonewillseetheLord.15 Seetoitthatnoone^vfailstoobtainthegraceofGod;thatno^w“rootofbitterness”springsupandcausestrouble,andbyitmanybecomedefiled;16 thatnooneis^xsexuallyimmoralorunholylikeEsau,whosoldhisbirthrightforasinglemeal.17 Foryouknowthat^yafterward,whenhedesiredtoinherittheblessing,hewasrejected,forhefoundnochancetorepent,thoughhesoughtitwithtears.

A Kingdom That Cannot Be Shaken

18 Foryouhavenotcometo^zwhatmaybetouched,ablazingfireanddarknessandgloomandatempest19 and^athesoundofatrumpetandavoicewhosewords^bmadethehearersbegthatnofurthermessagesbespokentothem.20 Fortheycouldnotenduretheorderthatwasgiven,^c“Ifevenabeasttouchesthemountain,itshallbestoned.”21 Indeed,^dsoterrifyingwasthesightthatMosessaid,“Itremblewithfear.”22 Butyouhavecometo^eMountZionandtothecityofthelivingGod,^ftheheavenlyJerusalem,andto^ginnumerableangelsinfestalgathering,23 andto^htheassembly¹ofthefirstbornwhoareⁱenrolledinheaven,andto^jGod,thejudgeofall,andtothespiritsoftherighteousmadeperfect,24 andtoJesus,^kthemediatorofanewcovenant,andto^lthesprinkledblood^mthatspeaksabetterwordthanthebloodofAbel.

25 Seethatyoudonotrefusehimwhoisspeaking.Forⁿiftheydidnotescapewhentheyrefusedhimwhowarnedthemonearth,muchlesswillweescapeifwerejecthimwhowarnsfromheaven.26 Atthattime^ohisvoiceshooktheearth,butnowhehaspromised,^p“YetoncemoreIwillshakenotonlytheearthbutalsotheheavens.”27 Thisphrase,“Yetoncemore,”indicates^qtheremovalofthingsthatareshaken—thatis,thingsthathavebeenmade—inorderthatthethingsthatcannotbeshakenmayremain.28 Thereforeletusbegratefulforreceiving^rakingdomthatcannotbeshaken,andthus^sletusoffertoGodacceptableworship,withreverenceandawe,29 forour^tGodisaconsumingfire.

Sacrifices Pleasing to God

13 Let^ubrotherlylovecontinue.2 ^vDonotneglecttoshowhospitalitytostrangers,forthereby^wsomehaveentertainedangelsunawares.3 ^xRememberthosewhoareinprison,asthoughinprisonwiththem,andthosewhoaremistreated,sinceyoualsoareinthebody.4 ^yLetmarriagebeheldinhonoramongall,andletthemarriagebedbeundefiled,forGodwilljudge^zthesexuallyimmoralandadulterous.5 Keepyourlife^afreefromloveofmoney,and^bbecontentwithwhatyouhave,forhehassaid,^c“Iwillneverleaveyounorforsakeyou.”6 Sowecanconfidentlysay,

7 Remember^fyourleaders,thosewhospoketoyouthewordofGod.Considertheoutcomeoftheirwayoflife,and^gimitatetheirfaith.8 JesusChristis^hthesameyesterdayandtodayandforever.9 Donotbeⁱledawaybydiverseandstrangeteachings,foritisgoodforthehearttobestrengthenedbygrace,^jnotbyfoods,whichhavenotbenefitedthosedevotedtothem.10 Wehaveanaltar^kfromwhichthosewhoservethetent¹havenorighttoeat.11 For^lthebodiesofthoseanimalswhosebloodisbroughtintotheholyplacesbythehighpriestasasacrificeforsinareburned^moutsidethecamp.12 SoJesusalsoⁿsuffered^ooutsidethegateinordertosanctifythepeople^pthroughhisownblood.13 Thereforeletusgotohimoutsidethecampandbear^qthereproachheendured.14 For^rherewehavenolastingcity,butweseekthecitythatistocome.15 ^sThroughhimthenletuscontinuallyofferup^tasacrificeofpraisetoGod,thatis,^uthefruitoflipsthatacknowledgehisname.16 Donotneglecttodogoodand^vtosharewhatyouhave,forsuch^wsacrificesarepleasingtoGod.

17 Obey^xyourleadersandsubmittothem,^yfortheyarekeepingwatchoveryoursouls,asthosewhowillhaveto^zgiveanaccount.^aLetthemdothiswithjoyandnotwithgroaning,forthatwouldbeofnoadvantagetoyou.

18 ^bPrayforus,forwearesurethatwehaveaclearconscience,desiringtoacthonorablyinallthings.19 Iurgeyouthemoreearnestlytodothisinorder^cthatImayberestoredtoyouthesooner.

20 Now^dmaytheGodofpeace^ewhobroughtagainfromthedeadourLordJesus,^fthegreatshepherdofthesheep,by^gthebloodoftheeternalcovenant,21 ^hequipyouwitheverythinggoodthatyoumaydohiswill,ⁱworkinginus²thatwhichispleasinginhissight,throughJesusChrist,^jtowhombegloryforeverandever.Amen.

Testing of Your Faith

2 ^eCountitalljoy,mybrothers,²whenyoumeettrials^fofvariouskinds,3 foryouknowthat^gthetestingofyourfaith^hproducessteadfastness.4 Andletsteadfastnesshaveitsfulleffect,thatyoumaybeⁱperfectandcomplete,lackinginnothing.

5 ^jIfanyofyoulackswisdom,^klethimaskGod,^lwhogivesgenerouslytoallwithoutreproach,anditwillbegivenhim.6 But^mlethimaskinfaith,ⁿwithnodoubting,fortheonewhodoubtsislike^oawaveoftheseathatisdrivenandtossedbythewind.7 ForthatpersonmustnotsupposethathewillreceiveanythingfromtheLord;8 ^pheisadouble-mindedman,^qunstableinallhisways.

9 Letthelowlybrotherboastinhisexaltation,10 and^rtherichinhishumiliation,because^slikeaflowerofthegrass³hewillpassaway.11 Forthesunriseswithitsscorchingheatand^twithersthegrass;itsflowerfalls,anditsbeautyperishes.Soalsowilltherichmanfadeawayinthemidstofhispursuits.

Hearing and Doing the Word

19 ^gKnowthis,mybelovedbrothers:leteveryperson^hbequicktohear,ⁱslowtospeak,^jslowtoanger;20 fortheangerofmandoesnotproducetherighteousnessofGod.21 Therefore^kputawayallfilthinessandrampantwickednessandreceivewith^lmeeknesstheimplantedword,^mwhichisabletosaveyoursouls.

22 Butbeⁿdoersoftheword,andnothearersonly,deceivingyourselves.23 Forifanyoneisahearerofthewordandnotadoer,heislikeamanwholooksintentlyathisnaturalfaceinamirror.24 Forhelooksathimselfandgoesawayandatonceforgetswhathewaslike.25 Buttheonewholooksintotheperfectlaw,^othelawofliberty,andperseveres,beingnohearerwhoforgetsbutadoerwhoacts,^phewillbeblessedinhisdoing.

26 Ifanyonethinksheisreligious^qanddoesnotbridlehistonguebutdeceiveshisheart,thisperson’s^rreligionisworthless.27 ReligionthatispureandundefiledbeforeGodtheFatheristhis:^stovisit^torphansandwidowsintheiraffliction,and^utokeeponeself^vunstainedfromtheworld.

The Sin of Partiality

2 Mybrothers,^1wshownopartialityasyouholdthefaithinourLordJesusChrist,^xtheLordofglory.2 Forifamanwearingagoldringandfineclothingcomesintoyourassembly,andapoormaninshabbyclothingalsocomesin,3 andifyoupayattentiontotheonewhowearsthefineclothingandsay,“Yousithereinagoodplace,”^ywhileyousaytothepoorman,“Youstandoverthere,”or,“Sitdownatmyfeet,”4 haveyounotthenmadedistinctionsamongyourselvesandbecome^zjudgeswithevilthoughts?5 Listen,mybelovedbrothers,^ahasnotGodchosenthosewhoarepoorintheworldtobe^brichinfaithandheirsof^cthekingdom,^dwhichhehaspromisedtothosewholovehim?6 Butyou^ehavedishonoredthepoorman.Arenottherichtheoneswhooppressyou,andtheoneswho^fdragyou^gintocourt?7 Aretheynottheoneswhoblasphemethehonorable^hnamebywhichyouwerecalled?

8 IfyoureallyfulfilltheroyallawaccordingtotheScripture,ⁱ“Youshallloveyourneighborasyourself,”youaredoingwell.9 Butifyou^jshowpartiality,youarecommittingsinandareconvictedbythelawastransgressors.10 Forwhoeverkeepsthewholelawbutfailsinonepoint^khasbecomeguiltyofallofit.11 Forhewhosaid,^l“Donotcommitadultery,”alsosaid,^l“Donotmurder.”Ifyoudonotcommitadulterybutdomurder,youhavebecomeatransgressorofthelaw.12 Sospeakandsoactasthosewhoaretobejudgedunder^mthelawofliberty.13 Forⁿjudgmentiswithoutmercytoonewhohasshownnomercy.Mercytriumphsoverjudgment.

Faith Without Works Is Dead

14 Whatgoodisit,mybrothers,ifsomeonesayshehasfaith^obutdoesnothaveworks?Canthatfaithsavehim?15 ^pIfabrotherorsisterispoorlyclothedandlackingindailyfood,16 ^qandoneofyousaystothem,“Goinpeace,bewarmedandfilled,”withoutgivingthemthethingsneededforthebody,whatgood²isthat?17 Soalsofaithbyitself,ifitdoesnothaveworks,isdead.

18 Butsomeonewillsay,“YouhavefaithandIhaveworks.”Showmeyourfaith^rapartfromyourworks,andIwillshowyoumyfaith^sbymyworks.19 ^tYoubelievethatGodisone;youdowell.Even^uthedemonsbelieve—andshudder!20 Doyouwanttobeshown,youfoolishperson,thatfaithapartfromworksisuseless?21 ^vWasnotAbrahamourfatherjustifiedbyworkswhenheoffereduphissonIsaaconthealtar?22 Youseethat^wfaithwasactivealongwithhisworks,andfaithwascompleted^xbyhisworks;23 andtheScripturewasfulfilledthatsays,^y“AbrahambelievedGod,anditwascountedtohimasrighteousness”—andhewascalleda^zfriendofGod.24 Youseethatapersonisjustifiedbyworksandnotbyfaithalone.25 Andinthesamewaywasnotalso^aRahabtheprostitutejustifiedbyworks^bwhenshereceivedthemessengersandsentthemoutbyanotherway?26 Forasthebodyapartfromthespiritisdead,soalsofaithapartfromworksisdead.
