God’s Covenant with Abram

15 AfterthesethingsthewordoftheLordcametoAbraminavision:^c“Fearnot,Abram,Iam^dyourshield;yourrewardshallbeverygreat.”2 ButAbramsaid,“OLordGod,whatwillyougiveme,forIcontinue¹childless,andtheheirofmyhouseisEliezerofDamascus?”3 AndAbramsaid,“Behold,youhavegivenmenooffspring,and^eamemberofmyhouseholdwillbemyheir.”4 Andbehold,thewordoftheLordcametohim:“Thismanshallnotbeyourheir;^fyourveryownson²shallbeyourheir.”5 Andhebroughthimoutsideandsaid,“Looktowardheaven,and^gnumberthestars,ifyouareabletonumberthem.”Thenhesaidtohim,^h“Soshallyouroffspringbe.”6 AndⁱhebelievedtheLord,and^jhecountedittohimasrighteousness.

7 Andhesaidtohim,“IamtheLordwho^kbroughtyououtfromUroftheChaldeans^ltogiveyouthislandtopossess.”8 Buthesaid,“OLordGod,^mhowamItoknowthatIshallpossessit?”9 Hesaidtohim,“Bringmeaheiferthreeyearsold,afemalegoatthreeyearsold,aramthreeyearsold,aturtledove,andayoungpigeon.”10 Andhebroughthimallthese,ⁿcuttheminhalf,andlaideachhalfoveragainsttheother.But^ohedidnotcutthebirdsinhalf.11 Andwhenbirdsofpreycamedownonthecarcasses,Abramdrovethemaway.

12 Asthesunwasgoingdown,a^pdeepsleepfellonAbram.Andbehold,dreadfulandgreatdarknessfelluponhim.13 ThentheLordsaidtoAbram,“Knowforcertain^qthatyouroffspringwillbesojournersinalandthatisnottheirsandwillbeservantsthere,and^rtheywillbeafflictedfor^sfourhundredyears.14 But^tIwillbringjudgmentonthenationthattheyserve,andafterward^utheyshallcomeoutwithgreatpossessions.15 Asforyou,youshallgotoyourfathersinpeace;^vyoushallbeburiedinagoodoldage.16 Andtheyshallcomebackhereinthefourthgeneration,for^wtheiniquityoftheAmorites^xisnotyetcomplete.”

17 Whenthesunhadgonedownanditwasdark,behold,asmokingfirepotandaflamingtorchpassedbetweenthesepieces.18 OnthatdaytheLordmadeacovenantwithAbram,saying,^y“ToyouroffspringIgive³thisland,from^ztheriverofEgypttothegreatriver,theriverEuphrates,19 thelandoftheKenites,theKenizzites,theKadmonites,20 theHittites,thePerizzites,theRephaim,21 theAmorites,theCanaanites,theGirgashitesandtheJebusites.”

Sarai and Hagar

16 ^aNowSarai,Abram’swife,hadbornehimnochildren.ShehadafemaleEgyptianservantwhosenamewas^bHagar.2 AndSaraisaidtoAbram,“Beholdnow,theLordhaspreventedmefrombearingchildren.Gointomyservant;itmaybethatIshallobtainchildren¹byher.”AndAbramlistenedtothevoiceofSarai.3 So,afterAbram^chadlivedtenyearsinthelandofCanaan,Sarai,Abram’swife,tookHagartheEgyptian,herservant,andgavehertoAbramherhusbandasawife.4 AndhewentintoHagar,andsheconceived.Andwhenshesawthatshehadconceived,^dshelookedwithcontemptonhermistress.²5 AndSaraisaidtoAbram,“Maythewrongdonetomebeonyou!Igavemyservanttoyourembrace,andwhenshesawthatshehadconceived,shelookedonmewithcontempt.May^etheLordjudgebetweenyouandme!”6 ButAbramsaidtoSarai,“Behold,yourservantisinyourpower;dotoherasyouplease.”ThenSaraidealtharshlywithher,andshefledfromher.

7 TheangeloftheLordfoundherbyaspringofwaterinthewilderness,thespringonthewayto^fShur.8 Andhesaid,“Hagar,servantofSarai,wherehaveyoucomefromandwhereareyougoing?”Shesaid,“IamfleeingfrommymistressSarai.”9 TheangeloftheLordsaidtoher,“Returntoyourmistressandsubmittoher.”10 TheangeloftheLordalsosaidtoher,^g“Iwillsurelymultiplyyouroffspringsothattheycannotbenumberedformultitude.”11 AndtheangeloftheLordsaidtoher,

13 SoshecalledthenameoftheLordwhospoketoher,“YouareaGodofseeing,”⁴forshesaid,^k“TrulyhereIhaveseenhimwholooksafterme.”⁵14 Thereforethewellwascalled^lBeer-lahai-roi;⁶itliesbetween^mKadeshandBered.

15 AndHagarboreAbramason,andAbramcalledthenameofhisson,whomHagarbore,Ishmael.16 Abramwaseighty-sixyearsoldwhenHagarboreIshmaeltoAbram.

Abraham and the Covenant of Circumcision

17 WhenAbramwasninety-nineyearsoldtheLordappearedtoAbramandsaidtohim,“IamGodAlmighty;¹walkbeforeme,andbeⁿblameless,2 thatImaymakemycovenantbetweenmeandyou,and^omaymultiplyyougreatly.”3 ThenAbram^pfellonhisface.AndGodsaidtohim,4 “Behold,mycovenantiswithyou,andyoushallbe^qthefatherofamultitudeofnations.5 NolongershallyournamebecalledAbram,²but^ryournameshallbeAbraham,^3sforIhavemadeyouthefatherofamultitudeofnations.6 Iwillmakeyouexceedinglyfruitful,andIwillmake^tyouintonations,and^ukingsshallcomefromyou.7 AndIwill^vestablishmycovenantbetweenmeandyouandyouroffspringafteryouthroughouttheirgenerationsforaneverlastingcovenant,^wtobeGodtoyouandtoyouroffspringafteryou.8 And^xIwillgivetoyouandtoyouroffspringafteryouthelandofyoursojournings,allthelandofCanaan,foraneverlastingpossession,and^yIwillbetheirGod.”

9 AndGodsaidtoAbraham,“Asforyou,youshallkeepmycovenant,youandyouroffspringafteryouthroughouttheirgenerations.10 Thisismycovenant,whichyoushallkeep,betweenmeandyouandyouroffspringafteryou:Everymaleamongyoushallbecircumcised.11 Youshallbecircumcisedinthefleshofyourforeskins,anditshallbea^zsignofthecovenantbetweenmeandyou.12 Hewhois^aeightdaysoldamongyoushallbecircumcised.Everymalethroughoutyourgenerations,whetherborninyourhouseor^bboughtwithyourmoneyfromanyforeignerwhoisnotofyouroffspring,13 bothhewhoisborninyourhouseandhewhoisboughtwithyourmoney,shallsurelybecircumcised.Soshallmycovenantbeinyourfleshaneverlastingcovenant.14 Anyuncircumcisedmalewhoisnotcircumcisedinthefleshofhisforeskinshallbecutofffromhispeople;hehasbrokenmycovenant.”

Isaac’s Birth Promised

15 AndGodsaidtoAbraham,“AsforSaraiyourwife,youshallnotcallhernameSarai,butSarah⁴shallbehername.16 Iwillblessher,andmoreover,Iwill^cgive⁵youasonbyher.Iwillblessher,and^dsheshallbecomenations;kingsofpeoplesshallcomefromher.”17 ThenAbraham^efellonhisface^fandlaughedandsaidtohimself,“Shallachildbeborntoamanwhoisahundredyearsold?ShallSarah,whoisninetyyearsold,bearachild?”18 AndAbrahamsaidtoGod,“OhthatIshmaelmightlivebeforeyou!”19 Godsaid,“No,but^gSarahyourwifeshallbearyouason,andyoushallcallhisname^hIsaac.⁶Iwillestablishmycovenantwithhimasaneverlastingcovenantforhisoffspringafterhim.20 AsforIshmael,Ihaveheardyou;behold,Ihaveblessedhimandwillmakehimfruitfulandⁱmultiplyhimgreatly.He^jshallfathertwelveprinces,and^kIwillmakehimintoagreatnation.21 But^lIwillestablishmycovenantwithIsaac,^mwhomSarahshallbeartoyouatthistimenextyear.”

22 Whenhehadfinishedtalkingwithhim,ⁿGodwentupfromAbraham.23 ThenAbrahamtookIshmaelhissonandallthoseborninhishouseorboughtwithhismoney,everymaleamongthemenofAbraham’shouse,andhecircumcisedthefleshoftheirforeskinsthatveryday,asGodhadsaidtohim.24 Abrahamwasninety-nineyearsoldwhenhewascircumcisedinthefleshofhisforeskin.25 AndIshmaelhissonwasthirteenyearsoldwhenhewascircumcisedinthefleshofhisforeskin.26 ThatverydayAbrahamandhissonIshmaelwerecircumcised.27 Andallthemenofhishouse,thoseborninthehouseandthoseboughtwithmoneyfromaforeigner,werecircumcisedwithhim.

18 AndtheLordappearedtohimbythe^ooaks¹ofMamre,ashesatatthedoorofhistentintheheatoftheday.2 Helifteduphiseyesandlooked,andbehold,threemenwerestandinginfrontofhim.^pWhenhesawthem,heranfromthetentdoortomeetthemandbowedhimselftotheearth3 andsaid,“OLord,²ifIhavefoundfavorinyoursight,donotpassbyyourservant.4 Leta^qlittlewaterbebrought,andwashyourfeet,andrestyourselvesunderthetree,5 whileIbringamorselofbread,that^ryoumayrefreshyourselves,andafterthatyoumaypasson—^ssinceyouhavecometoyourservant.”Sotheysaid,“Doasyouhavesaid.”6 AndAbrahamwentquicklyintothetenttoSarahandsaid,“Quick!Threeseahs³offineflour!Kneadit,andmakecakes.”7 AndAbrahamrantotheherdandtookacalf,tenderandgood,andgaveittoayoungman,whoprepareditquickly.8 Thenhetookcurdsandmilkandthecalfthathehadprepared,andsetitbeforethem.Andhestoodbythemunderthetreewhiletheyate.

9 Theysaidtohim,“WhereisSarahyourwife?”Andhesaid,“Sheis^tinthetent.”10 TheLordsaid,“Iwillsurelyreturntoyou^uaboutthistimenextyear,and^vSarahyourwifeshallhaveason.”AndSarahwaslisteningatthetentdoorbehindhim.11 Now^wAbrahamandSarahwereold,advancedinyears.ThewayofwomenhadceasedtobewithSarah.12 ^xSoSarahlaughedtoherself,saying,^y“AfterIamwornout,and^zmylordisold,shallIhavepleasure?”13 TheLordsaidtoAbraham,“WhydidSarahlaughandsay,‘ShallIindeedbearachild,nowthatIamold?’14 ^aIsanythingtoohard⁴fortheLord?^bAttheappointedtimeIwillreturntoyou,aboutthistimenextyear,andSarahshallhaveason.”15 ButSarahdeniedit,⁵saying,“Ididnotlaugh,”forshewasafraid.Hesaid,“No,butyoudidlaugh.”

16 Thenthemensetoutfromthere,andtheylookeddowntowardSodom.AndAbrahamwentwiththemtosetthemontheirway.17 TheLordsaid,^c“ShallIhidefromAbrahamwhatIamabouttodo,18 seeingthatAbrahamshallsurelybecomeagreatandmightynation,andallthenationsoftheearthshallbe^dblessedinhim?19 ForIhave^echosen⁶him,thathemaycommandhischildrenandhishouseholdafterhimtokeepthewayoftheLordbydoingrighteousnessandjustice,sothattheLordmaybringtoAbrahamwhathehaspromisedhim.”20 ThentheLordsaid,“Because^ftheoutcryagainstSodomandGomorrahisgreatandtheirsinisverygrave,21 ^gIwillgodowntoseewhethertheyhavedonealtogether⁷accordingtotheoutcrythathascometome.Andifnot,^hIwillknow.”

Abraham Intercedes for Sodom

22 ⁱSothementurnedfromthereandwenttowardSodom,butAbraham^jstillstoodbeforetheLord.23 ThenAbrahamdrewnearandsaid,^k“Willyouindeedsweepawaytherighteouswiththewicked?24 Supposetherearefiftyrighteouswithinthecity.Willyouthensweepawaytheplaceandnotspareitforthefiftyrighteouswhoareinit?25 Farbeitfromyoutodosuchathing,toputtherighteoustodeathwiththewicked,^lsothattherighteousfareasthewicked!Farbethatfromyou!^mShallnottheJudgeofalltheearthdowhatisjust?”26 AndtheLordsaid,ⁿ“IfIfindatSodomfiftyrighteousinthecity,Iwillsparethewholeplacefortheirsake.”

27 Abrahamansweredandsaid,^o“Behold,IhaveundertakentospeaktotheLord,Iwhoambutdustandashes.28 Supposefiveofthefiftyrighteousarelacking.Willyoudestroythewholecityforlackoffive?”Andhesaid,“IwillnotdestroyitifIfindforty-fivethere.”29 Againhespoketohimandsaid,“Supposefortyarefoundthere.”Heanswered,“ForthesakeoffortyIwillnotdoit.”30 Thenhesaid,“OhletnottheLordbeangry,andIwillspeak.Supposethirtyarefoundthere.”Heanswered,“Iwillnotdoit,ifIfindthirtythere.”31 Hesaid,“Behold,IhaveundertakentospeaktotheLord.Supposetwentyarefoundthere.”Heanswered,“ForthesakeoftwentyIwillnotdestroyit.”32 Thenhesaid,^p“OhletnottheLordbeangry,andIwillspeakagainbutthisonce.Supposetenarefoundthere.”Heanswered,“ForthesakeoftenIwillnotdestroyit.”33 AndtheLordwenthisway,whenhehadfinishedspeakingtoAbraham,andAbrahamreturnedtohisplace.

God Rescues Lot

19 The^qtwoangelscametoSodomintheevening,andLotwassittinginthegateofSodom.WhenLotsawthem,herosetomeetthemandbowedhimselfwithhisfacetotheearth2 andsaid,“Mylords,^rpleaseturnasidetoyourservant’shouseandspendthenight^sandwashyourfeet.Thenyoumayriseupearlyandgoonyourway.”Theysaid,^t“No;wewillspendthenightinthetownsquare.”3 Buthepressedthemstrongly;sotheyturnedasidetohimandenteredhishouse.Andhemadethemafeastandbakedunleavenedbread,andtheyate.

4 Butbeforetheylaydown,themenofthecity,themenofSodom,bothyoungandold,allthepeopletothelastman,surroundedthehouse.5 ^uAndtheycalledtoLot,“Wherearethemenwhocametoyoutonight?^vBringthemouttous,thatwe^wmayknowthem.”6 Lotwentouttothemenattheentrance,shutthedoorafterhim,7 andsaid,“Ibegyou,mybrothers,donotactsowickedly.8 ^xBehold,Ihavetwodaughterswhohavenotknownanyman.Letmebringthemouttoyou,anddotothemasyouplease.Onlydonothingtothesemen,fortheyhavecomeundertheshelterofmyroof.”9 Buttheysaid,“Standback!”Andtheysaid,“Thisfellow^ycametosojourn,and^zhehasbecomethejudge!Nowwewilldealworsewithyouthanwiththem.”ThentheypressedhardagainstthemanLot,anddrewneartobreakthedoordown.10 ButthemenreachedouttheirhandsandbroughtLotintothehousewiththemandshutthedoor.11 Andtheystruckwith^ablindnessthemenwhowereattheentranceofthehouse,bothsmallandgreat,sothattheyworethemselvesoutgropingforthedoor.

12 ThenthemensaidtoLot,“Haveyouanyoneelsehere?Sons-in-law,sons,daughters,oranyoneyouhaveinthecity,^bbringthemoutoftheplace.13 Forweareabouttodestroythisplace,^cbecausetheoutcryagainstitspeoplehasbecomegreatbeforetheLord,andtheLordhassentustodestroyit.”14 SoLotwentoutandsaidtohissons-in-law,whoweretomarryhisdaughters,^d“Up!Getoutofthisplace,fortheLordisabouttodestroythecity.”Butheseemedtohissons-in-lawtobejesting.

15 Asmorningdawned,theangelsurgedLot,saying,“Up!Takeyourwifeandyourtwodaughterswhoarehere,lestyoubesweptawayinthepunishmentofthecity.”16 Buthelingered.Sothemenseizedhimandhiswifeandhistwodaughtersbythehand,^etheLordbeingmercifultohim,andtheybroughthimoutandsethimoutsidethecity.17 Andastheybroughtthemout,onesaid,“Escapeforyourlife.^fDonotlookbackorstopanywhereinthe^gvalley.Escapetothehills,lestyoubesweptaway.”18 AndLotsaidtothem,“Oh,no,mylords.19 Behold,yourservanthasfoundfavorinyoursight,andyouhaveshownmegreatkindnessinsavingmylife.ButIcannotescapetothehills,lestthedisasterovertakemeandIdie.20 Behold,thiscityisnearenoughtofleeto,anditisalittleone.Letmeescapethere—isitnotalittleone?—andmylifewillbesaved!”21 Hesaidtohim,“Behold,Igrantyouthisfavoralso,thatIwillnotoverthrowthecityofwhichyouhavespoken.22 Escapetherequickly,forIcandonothingtillyouarrivethere.”Thereforethenameofthecitywascalled^hZoar.¹

God Destroys Sodom

23 ThesunhadrisenontheearthwhenLotcametoZoar.24 ThenⁱtheLordrainedonSodomandGomorrahsulfurandfirefromtheLordoutofheaven.25 Andheoverthrewthosecities,andallthevalley,andalltheinhabitantsofthecities,andwhatgrewontheground.26 ButLot’swife,behindhim,lookedback,andshebecame^japillarofsalt.

27 AndAbrahamwentearlyinthemorningtotheplacewherehehad^kstoodbeforetheLord.28 AndhelookeddowntowardSodomandGomorrahandtowardallthelandofthevalley,andhelookedand,behold,thesmokeofthelandwentuplikethesmokeofafurnace.

29 Soitwasthat,whenGoddestroyedthecitiesofthevalley,God^lrememberedAbrahamandsentLotoutofthemidstoftheoverthrowwhenheoverthrewthecitiesinwhichLothadlived.

Lot and His Daughters

30 NowLotwentupoutofZoarand^mlivedinthehillswithhistwodaughters,forhewasafraidtoliveinZoar.Sohelivedinacavewithhistwodaughters.31 Andthefirstbornsaidtotheyounger,“Ourfatherisold,andthereisnotamanonearthtocomeintousafterthemannerofalltheearth.32 Come,letusmakeourfatherdrinkwine,andwewillliewithhim,thatwemaypreserveoffspringfromourfather.”33 Sotheymadetheirfatherdrinkwinethatnight.Andthefirstbornwentinandlaywithherfather.Hedidnotknowwhenshelaydownorwhenshearose.

34 Thenextday,thefirstbornsaidtotheyounger,“Behold,Ilaylastnightwithmyfather.Letusmakehimdrinkwinetonightalso.Thenyougoinandliewithhim,thatwemaypreserveoffspringfromourfather.”35 Sotheymadetheirfatherdrinkwinethatnightalso.Andtheyoungeraroseandlaywithhim,andhedidnotknowwhenshelaydownorwhenshearose.36 ThusboththedaughtersofLotbecamepregnantbytheirfather.37 ThefirstbornboreasonandcalledhisnameMoab.²ⁿHeisthefatheroftheMoabitestothisday.38 TheyoungeralsoboreasonandcalledhisnameBen-ammi.^3oHeisthefatheroftheAmmonitestothisday.
