3 OfoolishGalatians!Whohasbewitchedyou?^zItwasbeforeyoureyesthatJesusChristwaspublicly^aportrayedascrucified.2 Letmeaskyouonlythis:^bDidyoureceivetheSpiritbyworksofthelaworby^chearingwithfaith?3 Areyousofoolish?^dHavingbegunbytheSpirit,areyounowbeingperfectedby¹theflesh?4 ^eDidyousuffer²somanythingsinvain—ifindeeditwasinvain?5 DoeshewhosuppliestheSpirittoyouand^fworksmiraclesamongyoudoso^gbyworksofthelaw,orbyhearingwithfaith—6 justas^hAbraham“believedGod,anditwascountedtohimasrighteousness”?

7 Knowthenthatitisⁱthoseoffaithwhoare^jthesonsofAbraham.8 AndtheScripture,foreseeingthat^kGodwouldjustify³theGentilesbyfaith,preachedthegospelbeforehandtoAbraham,saying,^l“Inyoushallallthenationsbeblessed.”9 Sothen,thosewhoareoffaithareblessedalongwithAbraham,themanoffaith.

The Righteous Shall Live by Faith

10 Forallwhorelyonworksofthelaware^munderacurse;foritiswritten,ⁿ“Cursedbeeveryonewhodoesnot^oabidebyallthingswrittenintheBookoftheLaw,anddothem.”11 Nowitisevidentthat^pnooneisjustifiedbeforeGodbythelaw,for^q“Therighteousshalllivebyfaith.”⁴12 Butthelawisnotoffaith,rather^r“Theonewhodoesthemshalllivebythem.”13 Christ^sredeemedusfromthecurseofthelawbybecomingacurseforus—foritiswritten,^t“Cursediseveryonewhoishanged^uonatree”—14 sothatinChristJesustheblessingofAbrahammight^vcometotheGentiles,sothat^wwemightreceive^xthepromisedSpirit⁵throughfaith.

The Law and the Promise

15 ^yTogiveahumanexample,brothers:^6zevenwithaman-madecovenant,nooneannulsitoraddstoitonceithasbeenratified.16 Now^athepromisesweremade^btoAbrahamandtohisoffspring.Itdoesnotsay,“Andtooffsprings,”referringtomany,butreferringtoone,^c“Andtoyouroffspring,”whoisChrist.17 ThisiswhatImean:thelaw,whichcame^d430yearsafterward,doesnotannulacovenantpreviouslyratifiedbyGod,soas^etomakethepromisevoid.18 Foriftheinheritancecomesbythelaw,itnolongercomesbypromise;but^fGodgaveittoAbrahambyapromise.

19 Whythenthelaw?^gItwasaddedbecauseoftransgressions,^huntiltheoffspringshouldcometowhomthepromisehadbeenmade,anditwasⁱputinplacethroughangels^jbyanintermediary.20 Now^kanintermediaryimpliesmorethanone,but^lGodisone.

21 IsthelawthencontrarytothepromisesofGod?Certainlynot!For^mifalawhadbeengiventhatcouldgivelife,thenrighteousnesswouldindeedbebythelaw.22 ButtheScriptureⁿimprisonedeverythingundersin,sothat^othepromisebyfaithinJesusChristmightbegiven^ptothosewhobelieve.

23 Nowbeforefaithcame,wewereheldcaptiveunderthelaw,^qimprisoneduntilthecomingfaithwouldberevealed.24 Sothen,^rthelawwasour^sguardianuntilChristcame,^tinorderthatwemightbejustifiedbyfaith.25 Butnowthatfaithhascome,wearenolongerunderaguardian,26 forinChristJesus^uyouareallsonsofGod,throughfaith.27 Forasmanyofyouas^vwerebaptized^wintoChristhave^xputonChrist.28 ^yThereisneitherJewnorGreek,thereisneitherslave⁷norfree,^zthereisnomaleandfemale,foryouarealloneinChristJesus.29 And^aifyouareChrist’s,thenyouareAbraham’soffspring,^bheirsaccordingtopromise.

Sons and Heirs

4 Imeanthattheheir,aslongasheisachild,isnodifferentfromaslave,¹thoughheistheownerofeverything,2 butheisunderguardiansandmanagersuntilthedatesetbyhisfather.3 Inthesamewaywealso,whenwewerechildren,^cwereenslavedtotheelementaryprinciples²oftheworld.4 But^dwhenthefullnessoftimehadcome,GodsentforthhisSon,^eborn^fofwoman,born^gunderthelaw,5 ^htoredeemthosewhowereunderthelaw,sothatwemightreceiveⁱadoptionassons.6 Andbecauseyouaresons,Godhassent^jtheSpiritofhisSonintoourhearts,crying,“Abba!Father!”7 Soyouarenolongeraslave,butason,andifason,then^kanheirthroughGod.

Paul’s Concern for the Galatians

8 Formerly,whenyou^ldidnotknowGod,you^mwereenslavedtothosethatbynatureⁿarenotgods.9 ButnowthatyouhavecometoknowGod,orrather^otobeknownbyGod,^phowcanyouturnbackagainto^qtheweakandworthlesselementaryprinciplesoftheworld,whoseslavesyouwanttobeoncemore?10 ^rYouobservedaysandmonthsandseasonsandyears!11 Iamafraid^sImayhavelaboredoveryouinvain.

12 Brothers,^3tIentreatyou,becomeasIam,forIalsohavebecomeasyouare.^uYoudidmenowrong.13 Youknowitwas^vbecauseofabodilyailmentthatIpreachedthegospeltoyou^watfirst,14 andthoughmyconditionwasatrialtoyou,youdidnotscornordespiseme,butreceivedme^xasanangelofGod,^yasChristJesus.15 Whatthenhasbecomeofyourblessedness?ForItestifytoyouthat,ifpossible,youwouldhavegougedoutyoureyesandgiventhemtome.16 HaveIthenbecomeyourenemyby^ztellingyouthetruth?⁴17 Theymakemuchofyou,butfornogoodpurpose.Theywanttoshutyouout,thatyoumaymakemuchofthem.18 Itisalwaysgoodtobemademuchofforagoodpurpose,and^anotonlywhenIampresentwithyou,19 ^bmylittlechildren,^cforwhomIamagainintheanguishofchildbirthuntilChrist^disformedinyou!20 IwishIcouldbepresentwithyounowandchangemytone,forIamperplexedaboutyou.

21 Tellme,youwhodesiretobeunderthelaw,doyounotlistentothelaw?22 ForitiswrittenthatAbrahamhadtwosons,^eonebyaslavewomanand^fonebyafreewoman.23 But^gthesonoftheslavewasbornaccordingtotheflesh,while^hthesonofthefreewomanwasbornthroughpromise.24 Nowthismaybeinterpretedallegorically:thesewomenaretwoⁱcovenants.^jOneisfromMountSinai,bearingchildrenforslavery;sheisHagar.25 NowHagarisMountSinaiinArabia;⁵shecorrespondstothepresentJerusalem,forsheisinslaverywithherchildren.26 But^ktheJerusalemaboveisfree,andsheisourmother.27 Foritiswritten,

28 Nowyou,⁶brothers,^mlikeIsaac,ⁿarechildrenofpromise.29 Butjustasatthattimehewhowasbornaccordingtotheflesh^opersecutedhimwhowasbornaccordingtotheSpirit,^psoalsoitisnow.30 ButwhatdoestheScripturesay?^q“Castouttheslavewomanandherson,forthesonoftheslavewomanshallnotinheritwiththesonofthefreewoman.”31 So,brothers,wearenotchildrenoftheslavebut^rofthefreewoman.

Christ Has Set Us Free

5 For^sfreedomChristhas^tsetusfree;^ustandfirmtherefore,anddonotsubmitagainto^vayokeof^wslavery.

2 Look:I,Paul,saytoyouthat^xifyouacceptcircumcision,^yChristwillbeofnoadvantagetoyou.3 Itestifyagaintoeverymanwhoacceptscircumcisionthat^zheisobligatedtokeepthewholelaw.4 Youare^aseveredfromChrist,^byouwhowouldbejustified¹bythelaw;^cyouhavefallenawayfromgrace.5 ForthroughtheSpirit,byfaith,weourselveseagerly^dwaitforthehopeofrighteousness.6 ForinChristJesus^eneithercircumcisionnoruncircumcisioncountsforanything,but^fonlyfaithworkingthroughlove.

7 ^gYouwererunningwell.Whohinderedyoufromobeying^hthetruth?8 Thispersuasionisnotfromⁱhimwhocallsyou.9 ^jAlittleleavenleavensthewholelump.10 ^kIhaveconfidenceintheLordthatyouwill^ltakenootherview,and^mtheonewhoistroublingyouwillbearthepenalty,whoeverheis.11 ButifI,brothers,²stillpreach³circumcision,ⁿwhyamIstillbeingpersecuted?Inthatcase^otheoffenseofthecrosshasbeenremoved.12 Iwish^pthosewhounsettleyouwouldemasculatethemselves!

13 Foryouwerecalledtofreedom,brothers.^qOnlydonotuseyourfreedomasanopportunityfortheflesh,butthroughlove^rserveoneanother.14 For^sthewholelawisfulfilledinoneword:^t“Youshallloveyourneighborasyourself.”15 Butifyou^ubiteanddevouroneanother,watchoutthatyouarenotconsumedbyoneanother.

Keep in Step with the Spirit

16 ButIsay,^vwalkbytheSpirit,andyouwillnotgratify^wthedesiresoftheflesh.17 For^xthedesiresofthefleshareagainsttheSpirit,andthedesiresoftheSpiritareagainsttheflesh,fortheseareopposedtoeachother,^ytokeepyoufromdoingthethingsyouwanttodo.18 Butifyouare^zledbytheSpirit,^ayouarenotunderthelaw.19 Now^btheworksofthefleshareevident:sexualimmorality,impurity,sensuality,20 idolatry,sorcery,enmity,strife,jealousy,fitsofanger,rivalries,dissensions,^cdivisions,21 envy,⁴drunkenness,orgies,andthingslikethese.Iwarnyou,asIwarnedyoubefore,that^dthosewhodo⁵suchthingswillnotinheritthekingdomofGod.22 But^ethefruitoftheSpiritis^flove,joy,peace,patience,^gkindness,goodness,faithfulness,23 ^hgentleness,ⁱself-control;^jagainstsuchthingsthereisnolaw.24 AndthosewhobelongtoChristJesus^khavecrucifiedthefleshwithits^lpassionsanddesires.

25 IfwelivebytheSpirit,^mletusalsokeepinstepwiththeSpirit.26 ⁿLetusnotbecomeconceited,provokingoneanother,envyingoneanother.

Bear One Another’s Burdens

6 Brothers,^1oifanyoneiscaughtinanytransgression,^pyouwhoarespiritualshouldrestorehimin^qaspiritofgentleness.Keepwatchonyourself,lestyoutoobetempted.2 ^rBearoneanother’sburdens,and^ssofulfill^tthelawofChrist.3 For^uifanyonethinksheissomething,^vwhenheisnothing,hedeceiveshimself.4 Butleteachone^wtesthisownwork,andthenhisreasontoboastwillbeinhimselfaloneandnotinhisneighbor.5 For^xeachwillhavetobearhisownload.

6 ^yLettheonewhoistaughtthewordshareallgoodthingswiththeonewhoteaches.7 ^zDonotbedeceived:Godisnotmocked,for^awhateveronesows,thatwillhealsoreap.8 For^btheonewhosowstohisownflesh^cwillfromthefleshreapcorruption,but^dtheonewhosowstotheSpiritwillfromtheSpiritreapeternallife.9 And^eletusnotgrowwearyofdoinggood,forindueseasonwewillreap,^fifwedonotgiveup.10 Sothen,^gaswehaveopportunity,letus^hdogoodtoeveryone,andespeciallytothosewhoareⁱofthehouseholdoffaith.

Final Warning and Benediction

11 SeewithwhatlargelettersIamwritingtoyou^jwithmyownhand.12 ^kItisthosewhowanttomakeagoodshowingintheflesh^lwhowouldforceyoutobecircumcised,andonly^minorderthattheymaynotbepersecutedforthecrossofChrist.13 Foreventhosewhoarecircumciseddonotthemselveskeepthelaw,buttheydesiretohaveyoucircumcisedthattheymayboastinyourflesh.14 ButfarbeitfrommetoboastⁿexceptinthecrossofourLordJesusChrist,bywhich²theworld^ohasbeencrucifiedtome,andItotheworld.15 For^pneithercircumcisioncountsforanything,noruncircumcision,but^qanewcreation.16 Andasforallwhowalkbythisrule,^rpeaceandmercybeuponthem,andupon^stheIsraelofGod.

17 Fromnowonletnoonecausemetrouble,forIbearonmybodythemarksofJesus.
