11 ^sTheSpiritliftedmeupandbroughtmeto^ttheeastgateofthehouseoftheLord,whichfaceseast.Andbehold,attheentranceofthegatewaytherewere^utwenty-fivemen.AndIsawamongthemJaazaniah^vthesonofAzzur,and^wPelatiahthesonofBenaiah,princesofthepeople.2 Andhesaidtome,^x“Sonofman,thesearethemenwhodeviseiniquityandwhogivewickedcounselinthiscity;3 ^ywhosay,^z‘Thetimeisnotnear¹tobuildhouses.^aThiscityisthecauldron,andwearethemeat.’4 Thereforeprophesyagainstthem;prophesy,Osonofman.”

5 And^btheSpiritoftheLordfelluponme,andhesaidtome,“Say,ThussaystheLord:Soyouthink,OhouseofIsrael.^cForIknowthethingsthatcomeintoyourmind.6 ^dYouhavemultipliedyourslaininthiscityandhavefilleditsstreetswiththeslain.7 ThereforethussaystheLordGod:^eYourslainwhomyouhavelaidinthemidstofit,^atheyarethemeat,and^athiscityisthecauldron,butyoushallbebroughtoutofthemidstofit.8 ^fYouhavefearedthesword,andIwillbringthesworduponyou,declarestheLordGod.9 AndIwillbringyououtofthemidstofit,and^ggiveyouintothehandsofforeigners,and^hexecutejudgmentsuponyou.10 ⁱYoushallfallbythesword.IwilljudgeyouattheborderofIsrael,^jandyoushallknowthatIamtheLord.11 ^kThiscityshallnotbeyourcauldron,norshallyoubethemeatinthemidstofit.IwilljudgeyouattheborderofIsrael,12 andyoushallknowthatIamtheLord.Foryouhavenotwalkedinmystatutes,norobeyedmyrules,^lbuthaveactedaccordingtotherulesofthenationsthatarearoundyou.”

13 Anditcametopass,whileIwasprophesying,^mthatⁿPelatiahthesonofBenaiahdied.^oThenIfelldownonmyfaceandcriedoutwithaloudvoiceandsaid,^o“Ah,LordGod!^pWillyoumakeafullendoftheremnantofIsrael?”

14 AndthewordoftheLordcametome:15 ^q“Sonofman,yourbrothers,evenyourbrothers,yourkinsmen,²thewholehouseofIsrael,allofthem,arethoseofwhomtheinhabitantsofJerusalemhavesaid,^r‘GofarfromtheLord;tousthislandisgivenforapossession.’16 Thereforesay,‘ThussaystheLordGod:ThoughIremovedthemfaroffamongthenations,andthoughIscatteredthemamongthecountries,yet^sIhavebeenasanctuarytothemforawhile³inthecountrieswheretheyhavegone.’17 Thereforesay,‘ThussaystheLordGod:^tIwillgatheryoufromthepeoplesandassembleyououtofthecountrieswhereyouhavebeenscattered,^tandIwillgiveyouthelandofIsrael.’18 Andwhentheycomethere,^utheywillremovefromitallits^vdetestablethingsandallitsabominations.19 ^wAndIwillgivethemoneheart,and^xanewspiritIwillputwithinthem.^yIwillremovetheheartofstonefromtheirflesh^zandgivethemaheartofflesh,20 ^athattheymaywalkinmystatutesandkeepmyrulesandobeythem.^bAndtheyshallbemypeople,andIwillbetheirGod.21 ^cButasforthosewhoseheartgoesaftertheirdetestablethingsandtheirabominations,^dIwill⁴bringtheirdeedsupontheirownheads,declarestheLordGod.”

22 ^eThenthecherubimlifteduptheirwings,withthewheelsbesidethem,^eandthegloryoftheGodofIsraelwasoverthem.23 AndthegloryoftheLordwentupfromthemidstofthecityand^fstoodonthemountainthatisontheeastsideofthecity.24 ^gAndtheSpiritliftedmeupandbroughtme^hinthevisionbytheSpiritofGodⁱintoChaldea,totheexiles.ThenthevisionthatIhadseenwentupfromme.25 AndItoldtheexilesallthethingsthattheLordhadshownme.

12 ThewordoftheLordcametome:2 ^j“Sonofman,youdwellinthemidstof^karebellioushouse,^lwhohaveeyestosee,butseenot,whohaveearstohear,buthearnot,fortheyare^karebellioushouse.3 Asforyou,sonofman,prepareforyourself^manexile’sbaggage,andgointoexilebydayⁿintheirsight.Youshallgolikeanexilefromyourplacetoanotherplaceⁿintheirsight.^oPerhapstheywillunderstand,though¹theyarearebellioushouse.4 Youshallbringoutyourbaggagebydayintheirsight,asbaggageforexile,andyoushallgooutyourself^pateveningintheirsight,asthosedowhomustgointoexile.5 Intheirsight^qdigthroughthewall,andbringyourbaggageoutthroughit.6 Intheirsightyoushallliftthebaggageuponyourshoulderandcarryitoutatdusk.Youshallcoveryourfacethatyoumaynotseetheland,forIhavemadeyou^rasignforthehouseofIsrael.”

7 ^sAndIdidasIwascommanded.^tIbroughtoutmybaggagebyday,asbaggageforexile,andintheeveningIdugthroughthewallwithmyownhands.Ibroughtoutmybaggageatdusk,carryingitonmyshoulderintheirsight.

8 InthemorningthewordoftheLordcametome:9 ^u“Sonofman,hasnotthehouseofIsrael,^vtherebellioushouse,saidtoyou,^w‘Whatareyoudoing?’10 Saytothem,‘ThussaystheLordGod:Thisoracleconcerns^2xtheprinceinJerusalemandallthehouseofIsraelwhoareinit.’³11 Say,^y‘Iamasignforyou:^zasIhavedone,soshallitbedonetothem.Theyshallgointoexile,intocaptivity.’12 ^aAndtheprincewhoisamongthemshalllifthisbaggageuponhisshoulderatdusk,andshallgoout.^bTheyshalldigthroughthewalltobringhimoutthroughit.^cHeshallcoverhisface,thathemaynotseethelandwithhiseyes.13 ^dAndIwillspreadmynetoverhim,andheshallbetakeninmysnare.And^eIwillbringhimtoBabylon,thelandoftheChaldeans,^eyetheshallnotseeit,andheshalldiethere.14 ^fAndIwillscattertowardeverywindallwhoarearoundhim,hishelpersandallhistroops,^gandIwillunsheathetheswordafterthem.15 ^hAndtheyshallknowthatIamtheLord,whenIdispersethemamongthenationsandscatterthemamongthecountries.16 ⁱButIwillletafewofthemescapefromthesword,fromfamineandpestilence,thattheymaydeclarealltheirabominationsamongthenationswheretheygo,^jandmayknowthatIamtheLord.”

17 AndthewordoftheLordcametome:18 ^k“Sonofman,^leatyourbreadwithquaking,anddrinkwaterwithtremblingandwithanxiety.19 Andsaytothepeopleoftheland,ThussaystheLordGodconcerningtheinhabitantsofJerusaleminthelandofIsrael:^mTheyshalleattheirbreadwithanxiety,^manddrinkwaterindismay.Inthiswayⁿherlandwillbestrippedofallitcontains,^oonaccountoftheviolenceofallthosewhodwellinit.20 ^pAndtheinhabitedcitiesshallbelaidwaste,andthelandshallbecomeadesolation;andyoushallknowthatIamtheLord.”

21 AndthewordoftheLordcametome:22 “Sonofman,^qwhatisthisproverbthatyou⁴haveaboutthelandofIsrael,saying,^r‘Thedaysgrowlong,andeveryvisioncomestonothing’?23 Tellthemtherefore,‘ThussaystheLordGod:Iwillputanendtothisproverb,andtheyshallnomoreuseitasaproverbinIsrael.’Butsaytothem,^sThedaysarenear,andthefulfillment⁵ofeveryvision.24 ^tForthereshallbenomoreany^ufalsevisionorflatteringdivinationwithinthehouseofIsrael.25 ForIamtheLord;Iwillspeak^vthewordthatIwillspeak,anditwillbeperformed.^wItwillnolongerbedelayed,butinyourdays,^xOrebellioushouse,Iwillspeakthewordandperformit,declarestheLordGod.”

26 AndthewordoftheLordcametome:27 “Sonofman,behold,theyofthehouseofIsraelsay,^y‘Thevisionthatheseesis^zformanydaysfromnow,andheprophesiesoftimesfaroff.’28 Thereforesaytothem,ThussaystheLordGod:^wNoneofmywordswillbedelayedanylonger,^vbutthewordthatIspeakwillbeperformed,declarestheLordGod.”

False Prophets Condemned

13 ThewordoftheLordcametome:2 ^a“Sonofman,prophesyagainsttheprophetsofIsrael,whoareprophesying,andsaytothose^bwhoprophesyfromtheirownhearts:‘HearthewordoftheLord!’3 ThussaystheLordGod,Woetothefoolishprophetswhofollowtheirownspirit,andhaveseennothing!4 Yourprophetshavebeenlikejackalsamongruins,OIsrael.5 ^cYouhavenotgoneupintothebreaches,orbuiltupawallforthehouseofIsrael,thatitmightstandinbattleinthedayoftheLord.6 ^dTheyhaveseenfalsevisionsandlyingdivinations.Theysay,‘DeclarestheLord,’^ewhentheLordhasnotsentthem,andyettheyexpecthimtofulfilltheirword.7 Haveyounotseenafalsevisionandutteredalyingdivination,^fwheneveryouhavesaid,‘DeclarestheLord,’althoughIhavenotspoken?”

8 ThereforethussaystheLordGod:“Becauseyouhaveutteredfalsehoodandseenlyingvisions,thereforebehold,^gIamagainstyou,declarestheLordGod.9 Myhandwillbeagainsttheprophetswhoseefalsevisionsandwhogivelyingdivinations.Theyshallnotbeinthecouncilofmypeople,^hnorbeenrolledintheregisterofthehouseofIsrael,ⁱnorshalltheyenterthelandofIsrael.^jAndyoushallknowthatIamtheLordGod.10 Preciselybecausetheyhavemisledmypeople,^ksaying,‘Peace,’whenthereisnopeace,andbecause,whenthepeoplebuildawall,^ltheseprophetssmearitwithwhitewash,¹11 saytothosewhosmearitwithwhitewashthatitshallfall!^mTherewillbeadelugeofrain,andyou,Ogreathailstones,willfall,andastormywindbreakout.12 Andwhenthewallfalls,willitnotbesaidtoyou,‘Whereisthecoatingwithwhichyousmearedit?’13 ThereforethussaystheLordGod:^mIwillmakeastormywindbreakoutinmywrath,^mandthereshallbeadelugeofraininmyanger,andgreathailstonesinwrathtomakeafullend.14 AndIwillbreakdownthewallthatyouhavesmearedwithwhitewash,andbringitdowntotheground,sothatitsfoundationwillbelaidbare.Whenitfalls,youshallperishinthemidstofit,ⁿandyoushallknowthatIamtheLord.15 ThuswillIspendmywrathuponthewallanduponthosewhohavesmeareditwithwhitewash,andIwillsaytoyou,Thewallisnomore,northosewhosmearedit,16 theprophetsofIsraelwhoprophesiedconcerningJerusalem^kandsawvisionsofpeaceforher,whentherewasnopeace,declarestheLordGod.

17 “Andyou,sonofman,^osetyourfaceagainst^pthedaughtersofyourpeople,^qwhoprophesyoutoftheirownhearts.Prophesyagainstthem18 andsay,ThussaystheLordGod:Woetothewomen^rwhosewmagicbandsuponallwrists,and^smakeveilsfortheheadsofpersonsofeverystature,in^tthehuntforsouls!Willyouhuntdownsoulsbelongingtomypeopleandkeepyourownsoulsalive?19 Youhaveprofanedmeamongmypeople^uforhandfulsofbarley^vandforpiecesofbread,puttingtodeathsoulswhoshouldnotdieandkeepingalivesoulswhoshouldnotlive,byyourlyingtomypeople,wholistentolies.

20 “ThereforethussaystheLordGod:Behold,^wIamagainst^xyourmagicbandswithwhichyouhuntthesoulslikebirds,andIwilltearthemfromyourarms,andIwillletthesoulswhomyouhuntgofree,thesoulslikebirds.21 YourveilsalsoIwilltearoffand^ydelivermypeopleoutofyourhand,andtheyshallbenomoreinyourhandasprey,^zandyoushallknowthatIamtheLord.22 ^aBecauseyouhavedisheartenedtherighteousfalsely,althoughIhavenotgrievedhim,and^byouhaveencouragedthewicked,that^cheshouldnotturnfromhisevilwaytosavehislife,23 ^dthereforeyoushallnomoreseefalsevisionsnorpracticedivination.Iwilldelivermypeopleoutofyourhand.AndyoushallknowthatIamtheLord.”

Idolatrous Elders Condemned

14 Thencertainofthe^eeldersofIsraelcametome^eandsatbeforeme.2 AndthewordoftheLordcametome:3 ^f“Sonofman,thesemenhavetakentheiridolsintotheirhearts,andset^gthestumblingblockoftheiriniquitybeforetheirfaces.^hShouldIindeedletmyselfbeconsultedbythem?4 Thereforespeaktothemandsaytothem,ThussaystheLordGod:AnyoneofthehouseofIsraelwhotakeshisidolsintohisheartandsetsthestumblingblockofhisiniquitybeforehisface,andyetcomestotheprophet,ⁱItheLordwillanswerhimashecomeswiththemultitudeofhisidols,5 ^jthatImaylayholdoftheheartsofthehouseofIsrael,^kwhoareallestrangedfrommethroughtheiridols.

6 “ThereforesaytothehouseofIsrael,ThussaystheLordGod:^lRepentandturnawayfromyouridols,andturnawayyourfacesfromallyourabominations.7 ForanyoneofthehouseofIsrael,orofthestrangerswhosojourninIsrael,^kwhoseparateshimselffromme,takinghisidolsintohisheartandputtingthestumblingblockofhisiniquitybeforehisface,andyetcomestoaprophettoconsultmethroughhim,^mItheLordwillanswerhimmyself.8 AndⁿIwillsetmyfaceagainstthatman;I^owillmakehimasignandabywordⁿandcuthimofffromthemidstofmypeople,^pandyoushallknowthatIamtheLord.9 Andiftheprophetisdeceivedandspeaksaword,^qI,theLord,havedeceivedthatprophet,andIwillstretchoutmyhandagainsthimandwilldestroyhimfromthemidstofmypeopleIsrael.10 Andtheyshallbeartheirpunishment¹—thepunishmentoftheprophetandthepunishmentoftheinquirershallbealike—11 thatthehouseofIsraelmaynomoregoastrayfromme,nor^rdefilethemselvesanymorewithalltheirtransgressions,^sbutthattheymaybemypeopleandImaybetheirGod,declarestheLordGod.”

Jerusalem Will Not Be Spared

12 AndthewordoftheLordcametome:13 ^t“Sonofman,whenalandsinsagainstme^ubyactingfaithlessly,andIstretchoutmyhandagainstitand^vbreakitssupply²ofbreadandsendfamineuponit,and^wcutofffromitmanandbeast,14 ^xevenifthesethreemen,^yNoah,^zDaniel,and^aJob,wereinit,^btheywoulddeliverbuttheirownlivesbytheirrighteousness,declarestheLordGod.

15 ^c“IfIcausewildbeaststopassthroughtheland,andtheyravageit,^danditbemadedesolate,sothatnoonemaypassthroughbecauseofthebeasts,16 evenifthesethreemenwereinit,^easIlive,declarestheLordGod,theywoulddeliverneithersonsnordaughters.Theyalonewouldbedelivered,but^fthelandwouldbedesolate.

17 “Or^gifIbringasworduponthatlandandsay,Letaswordpassthroughtheland,^handIcutofffromitmanandbeast,18 ^xthoughthesethreemenwereinit,asIlive,declarestheLordGod,theywoulddeliverneithersonsnordaughters,buttheyalonewouldbedelivered.

19 “OrⁱifIsendapestilenceintothatlandandpouroutmywrathuponitwithblood,tocutofffromitmanandbeast,20 evenifNoah,Daniel,andJobwereinit,asIlive,declarestheLordGod,theywoulddeliverneithersonnordaughter.Theywoulddeliverbuttheirownlivesbytheirrighteousness.

21 “ForthussaystheLordGod:Howmuchmore^jwhenIsenduponJerusalemmyfourdisastrousactsofjudgment,^ksword,^lfamine,^mwildbeasts,andⁿpestilence,tocutofffromitmanandbeast!22 Butbehold,^osomesurvivorswillbeleftinit,sonsanddaughterswhowillbebroughtout;behold,whentheycomeouttoyou,and^pyouseetheirwaysandtheirdeeds,youwillbeconsoledforthedisasterthatIhavebroughtuponJerusalem,forallthatIhavebroughtuponit.23 Theywillconsoleyou,whenyouseetheirwaysandtheirdeeds,andyoushallknowthatIhavenotdonewithoutcauseallthatIhavedoneinit,declarestheLordGod.”

Jerusalem, a Useless Vine

15 AndthewordoftheLordcametome:2 ^q“Sonofman,howdoes^rthewoodofthevinesurpassanywood,thevinebranchthatisamongthetreesoftheforest?3 Iswoodtakenfromittomakeanything?Dopeopletake^sapegfromittohanganyvesselonit?4 ^tBehold,itisgiventothefireforfuel.Whenthefirehasconsumedbothendsofit,andthemiddleofitischarred,isitusefulforanything?5 ^uBehold,whenitwaswhole,itwasusedfornothing.Howmuchless,whenthefirehasconsumeditanditischarred,caniteverbeusedforanything!6 ThereforethussaystheLordGod:^vLikethewoodofthevineamongthetreesoftheforest,^twhichIhavegiventothefireforfuel,sohaveIgivenuptheinhabitantsofJerusalem.7 ^wAndIwillsetmyfaceagainstthem.Though^xtheyescapefromthefire,thefireshallyetconsumethem,^yandyouwillknowthatIamtheLord,^wwhenIsetmyfaceagainstthem.8 ^zAndIwillmakethelanddesolate,because^atheyhaveactedfaithlessly,declarestheLordGod.”
