19 OnthethirdnewmoonafterthepeopleofIsraelhadgoneoutofthelandofEgypt,onthatdaythey^pcameintothewildernessofSinai.2 Theysetoutfrom^qRephidimandcameintothewildernessofSinai,andtheyencampedinthewilderness.ThereIsraelencampedbefore^rthemountain,3 while^sMoseswentuptoGod.^tTheLordcalledtohimoutofthemountain,saying,“ThusyoushallsaytothehouseofJacob,andtellthepeopleofIsrael:4 ^u‘YouyourselveshaveseenwhatIdidtotheEgyptians,andhow^vIboreyouoneagles’wingsandbroughtyoutomyself.5 Nowtherefore,ifyouwillindeedobeymyvoiceandkeepmycovenant,youshallbe^wmytreasuredpossessionamongallpeoples,for^xalltheearthismine;6 andyoushallbetomea^ykingdomofpriestsand^zaholynation.’ThesearethewordsthatyoushallspeaktothepeopleofIsrael.”

7 SoMosescameandcalledtheeldersofthepeopleandsetbeforethemallthesewordsthattheLordhadcommandedhim.8 ^aAllthepeopleansweredtogetherandsaid,“AllthattheLordhasspokenwewilldo.”AndMosesreportedthewordsofthepeopletotheLord.9 AndtheLordsaidtoMoses,“Behold,Iamcomingtoyou^binathickcloud,that^cthepeoplemayhearwhenIspeakwithyou,andmayalso^dbelieveyouforever.”

WhenMosestoldthewordsofthepeopletotheLord,10 theLordsaidtoMoses,“Gotothepeopleand^econsecratethemtodayandtomorrow,andletthem^fwashtheirgarments11 andbereadyforthethirdday.Foronthethirdday^gtheLordwillcomedownonMountSinaiinthesightofallthepeople.12 Andyoushallsetlimitsforthepeopleallaround,saying,‘Takecarenottogoupintothemountainortouchtheedgeofit.^hWhoevertouchesthemountainshallbeputtodeath.13 Nohandshalltouchhim,butheshallbestonedorshot;¹whetherbeastorman,heshallnotlive.’Whenⁱthetrumpetsoundsalongblast,theyshallcomeuptothemountain.”14 SoMoses^jwentdownfromthemountaintothepeopleand^econsecratedthepeople;^fandtheywashedtheirgarments.15 Andhesaidtothepeople,“Bereadyforthe^kthirdday;^ldonotgonearawoman.”

16 Onthemorningofthe^kthirddaytherewere^mthundersandlightningsandⁿathickcloudonthemountainandaveryloud^otrumpetblast,sothatallthepeopleinthecamp^ptrembled.17 Then^qMosesbroughtthepeopleoutofthecamptomeetGod,andtheytooktheirstandatthefootofthemountain.18 Now^rMountSinaiwaswrappedinsmokebecausetheLordhaddescendedonitinfire.Thesmokeofitwentuplikethesmokeofakiln,and^sthewholemountaintrembledgreatly.19 Andasthe^osoundofthetrumpetgrewlouderandlouder,Mosesspoke,and^tGodansweredhiminthunder.20 TheLordcamedownonMountSinai,tothetopofthemountain.AndtheLordcalledMosestothetopofthemountain,andMoseswentup.

21 AndtheLordsaidtoMoses,“Godownandwarnthepeople,lesttheybreakthroughtotheLord^utolookandmanyofthemperish.22 AlsoletthepriestswhocomeneartotheLord^vconsecratethemselves,lesttheLord^wbreakoutagainstthem.”23 AndMosessaidtotheLord,“ThepeoplecannotcomeuptoMountSinai,foryouyourselfwarnedus,saying,^x‘Setlimitsaroundthemountainandconsecrateit.’”24 AndtheLordsaidtohim,“Godown,andcomeupbringingAaronwithyou.Butdonotletthepriestsandthepeople^ybreakthroughtocomeuptotheLord,lesthebreakoutagainstthem.”25 SoMoseswentdowntothepeopleandtoldthem.

The Ten Commandments

20 ^zAnd^aGodspokeallthesewords,saying,

2 ^b“IamtheLordyourGod,whobroughtyououtofthelandofEgypt,outofthehouseofslavery.

3 ^c“Youshallhavenoothergodsbefore¹me.

4 ^d“Youshallnotmakeforyourselfacarvedimage,oranylikenessofanythingthatisinheavenabove,orthatisintheearthbeneath,orthatisinthewaterundertheearth.5 ^eYoushallnotbowdowntothemorservethem,forItheLordyourGodam^fajealousGod,^gvisitingtheiniquityofthefathersonthechildrentothethirdandfourthgenerationofthosewhohateme,6 butshowingsteadfastlovetothousands²ofthosewholovemeandkeepmycommandments.

7 ^h“YoushallnottakethenameoftheLordyourGodinvain,fortheLordwillnotholdhimguiltlesswhotakeshisnameinvain.

8 ⁱ“RemembertheSabbathday,tokeepitholy.9 ^jSixdaysyoushalllabor,anddoallyourwork,10 butthe^kseventhdayisaSabbathtotheLordyourGod.Onityoushallnotdoanywork,you,oryourson,oryourdaughter,yourmaleservant,oryourfemaleservant,oryourlivestock,orthe^lsojournerwhoiswithinyourgates.11 For^minsixdaystheLordmadetheheavensandtheearth,thesea,andallthatisinthem,andrestedontheseventhday.ThereforetheLordblessedtheSabbathdayandmadeitholy.

12 ⁿ“Honoryourfatherandyourmother,^othatyourdaysmaybelonginthelandthattheLordyourGodisgivingyou.

13 ^p“Youshallnotmurder.³

14 ^q“Youshallnotcommitadultery.

15 ^r“Youshallnotsteal.

16 ^s“Youshallnotbearfalsewitnessagainstyourneighbor.

17 ^t“Youshallnotcovet^uyourneighbor’shouse;^vyoushallnotcovetyourneighbor’swife,orhismaleservant,orhisfemaleservant,orhisox,orhisdonkey,oranythingthatisyourneighbor’s.”

18 Nowwhenallthepeoplesaw^wthethunderandtheflashesoflightningandthesoundofthetrumpetandthemountainsmoking,thepeoplewereafraid⁴andtrembled,andtheystoodfaroff19 andsaidtoMoses,^x“Youspeaktous,andwewilllisten;butdonotletGodspeaktous,lestwedie.”20 ^yMosessaidtothepeople,“Donotfear,forGodhascometo^ztestyou,thatthefearofhimmaybebeforeyou,thatyoumaynotsin.”21 Thepeoplestoodfaroff,whileMosesdrewneartothe^athickdarknesswhereGodwas.

22 AndtheLordsaidtoMoses,“ThusyoushallsaytothepeopleofIsrael:‘YouhaveseenforyourselvesthatIhave^btalkedwithyoufromheaven.23 ^cYoushallnotmakegodsofsilvertobewithme,norshallyoumakeforyourselvesgodsofgold.24 Analtarofearthyoushallmakeformeandsacrificeonityourburntofferingsandyourpeaceofferings,yoursheepandyouroxen.^dIneveryplacewhereIcausemynametoberememberedIwillcometoyouand^eblessyou.25 ^fIfyoumakemeanaltarofstone,^gyoushallnotbuilditofhewnstones,forifyouwieldyourtoolonityouprofaneit.26 Andyoushallnotgoupbystepstomyaltar,thatyournakednessbenotexposedonit.’

21 “Nowthesearethe^hrulesthatyoushallsetbeforethem.2 ⁱWhenyoubuyaHebrewslave,¹heshallservesixyears,andintheseventhheshallgooutfree,fornothing.3 Ifhecomesinsingle,heshallgooutsingle;ifhecomesinmarried,thenhiswifeshallgooutwithhim.4 Ifhismastergiveshimawifeandshebearshimsonsordaughters,thewifeandherchildrenshallbehermaster’s,andheshallgooutalone.5 But^jiftheslaveplainlysays,‘Ilovemymaster,mywife,andmychildren;Iwillnotgooutfree,’6 thenhismastershallbringhimto^kGod,andheshallbringhimtothedoororthedoorpost.Andhismastershallborehisearthroughwithanawl,andheshallbehisslaveforever.

7 “Whenaman^lsellshisdaughterasaslave,sheshallnotgooutasthemaleslavesdo.8 Ifshedoesnotpleasehermaster,whohasdesignatedher²forhimself,thenheshallletherberedeemed.Heshallhavenorighttosellhertoaforeignpeople,sincehehasbrokenfaithwithher.9 Ifhedesignatesherforhisson,heshalldealwithheraswithadaughter.10 Ifhetakesanotherwifetohimself,heshallnotdiminishherfood,herclothing,or^mhermaritalrights.11 Andifhedoesnotdothesethreethingsforher,sheshallgooutfornothing,withoutpaymentofmoney.

12 ⁿ“Whoeverstrikesamansothathediesshallbeputtodeath.13 ^oButifhedidnotlieinwaitforhim,butGodlethimfallintohishand,then^pIwillappointforyouaplacetowhichhemayflee.14 Butifamanwillfullyattacksanothertokillhimbycunning,^qyoushalltakehimfrommyaltar,thathemaydie.

15 “Whoeverstrikeshisfatherorhismothershallbeputtodeath.

16 ^r“Whoeverstealsamanandsellshim,andanyonefound^sinpossessionofhim,shallbeputtodeath.

17 ^t“Whoevercurses³hisfatherorhismothershallbeputtodeath.

18 “Whenmenquarrelandonestrikestheotherwithastoneorwithhisfistandthemandoesnotdiebuttakestohisbed,19 thenifthemanrisesagainandwalksoutdoorswithhisstaff,hewhostruckhimshallbeclear;onlyheshallpayforthelossofhistime,andshallhavehimthoroughlyhealed.

20 “Whenamanstrikeshisslave,maleorfemale,witharodandtheslavediesunderhishand,heshallbeavenged.21 Butiftheslavesurvivesadayortwo,heisnottobeavenged,forthe^uslaveishismoney.

22 “Whenmenstrivetogetherandhitapregnantwoman,sothatherchildrencomeout,butthereisnoharm,theonewhohithershallsurelybefined,asthewoman’shusbandshallimposeonhim,and^vheshallpayasthe^wjudgesdetermine.23 Butifthereisharm,⁴thenyoushallpay^xlifeforlife,24 ^yeyeforeye,toothfortooth,handforhand,footforfoot,25 burnforburn,woundforwound,stripeforstripe.

26 “Whenamanstrikestheeyeofhisslave,maleorfemale,anddestroysit,heshalllettheslavegofreebecauseofhiseye.27 Ifheknocksoutthetoothofhisslave,maleorfemale,heshalllettheslavegofreebecauseofhistooth.

28 “Whenanoxgoresamanorawomantodeath,the^zoxshallbestoned,anditsfleshshallnotbeeaten,buttheowneroftheoxshallnotbeliable.29 Butiftheoxhasbeenaccustomedtogoreinthepast,anditsownerhasbeenwarnedbuthasnotkeptitin,anditkillsamanorawoman,theoxshallbestoned,anditsowneralsoshallbeputtodeath.30 If^aaransomisimposedonhim,then^vheshallgivefortheredemptionofhislifewhateverisimposedonhim.31 Ifitgoresaman’ssonordaughter,heshallbedealtwithaccordingtothissamerule.32 Iftheoxgoresaslave,maleorfemale,theownershallgivetotheirmaster^bthirtyshekels⁵ofsilver,and^ztheoxshallbestoned.

33 “Whenamanopensapit,orwhenamandigsapitanddoesnotcoverit,andanoxoradonkeyfallsintoit,34 theownerofthepitshallmakerestoration.Heshallgivemoneytoitsowner,andthedeadbeastshallbehis.

35 “Whenoneman’soxbuttsanother’s,sothatitdies,thentheyshallselltheliveoxandshareitsprice,andthedeadbeastalsotheyshallshare.36 Orifitisknownthattheoxhasbeenaccustomedtogoreinthepast,anditsownerhasnotkeptitin,heshallrepayoxforox,andthedeadbeastshallbehis.

22 “Ifamanstealsanoxorasheep,andkillsitorsellsit,heshallrepayfiveoxenforanox,and^cfoursheepforasheep.2 ¹Ifathiefisfound^dbreakinginandisstrucksothathedies,thereshallbenobloodguiltforhim,3 butifthesunhasrisenonhim,thereshallbebloodguiltforhim.He²shallsurelypay.Ifhehasnothing,then^eheshallbesoldforhistheft.4 Ifthestolenbeast^fisfoundaliveinhispossession,whetheritisanoxoradonkeyorasheep,^gheshallpaydouble.

5 “Ifamancausesafieldorvineyardtobegrazedover,orletshisbeastlooseanditfeedsinanotherman’sfield,heshallmakerestitutionfromthebestinhisownfieldandinhisownvineyard.

6 “Iffirebreaksoutandcatchesinthornssothatthestackedgrainorthestandinggrainorthefieldisconsumed,hewhostartedthefireshallmakefullrestitution.

7 “Ifamangivestohisneighbormoneyorgoodstokeepsafe,anditisstolenfromtheman’shouse,then,ifthethiefisfound,^gheshallpaydouble.8 Ifthethiefisnotfound,theownerofthehouseshallcomeneartoGodtoshowwhetherornothehasputhishandtohisneighbor’sproperty.9 Foreverybreachoftrust,whetheritisforanox,foradonkey,forasheep,foracloak,orforanykindoflostthing,ofwhichonesays,‘Thisisit,’thecaseofbothpartiesshallcomebeforeGod.TheonewhomGodcondemnsshallpaydoubletohisneighbor.

10 “Ifamangivestohisneighboradonkeyoranoxorasheeporanybeasttokeepsafe,anditdiesorisinjuredorisdrivenaway,withoutanyoneseeingit,11 ^hanoathbytheLordshallbebetweenthembothtoseewhetherornothehasputhishandtohisneighbor’sproperty.Theownershallaccepttheoath,andheshallnotmakerestitution.12 Butifⁱitisstolenfromhim,heshallmakerestitutiontoitsowner.13 Ifitistornbybeasts,lethimbringitasevidence.Heshallnotmakerestitutionforwhathasbeentorn.

14 “Ifamanborrowsanythingofhisneighbor,anditisinjuredordies,theownernotbeingwithit,heshallmakefullrestitution.15 Iftheownerwaswithit,heshallnotmakerestitution;ifitwashired,itcameforitshiringfee.³

Laws for a Just Community

16 ^j“Ifamanseducesavirgin⁴whoisnotbetrothedandlieswithher,heshallgivethebride-price⁵forherandmakeherhiswife.17 Ifherfatherutterlyrefusestogivehertohim,^jheshallpaymoneyequaltothe^kbride-priceforvirgins.

18 ^l“Youshallnotpermitasorceresstolive.

19 ^m“Whoeverlieswithananimalshallbeputtodeath.

20 ⁿ“Whoeversacrificestoanygod,otherthantheLordalone,shallbedevotedtodestruction.⁶

21 ^o“Youshallnotwrongasojourneroroppresshim,foryouweresojournersinthelandofEgypt.22 ^pYoushallnotmistreatanywidoworfatherlesschild.23 Ifyoudomistreatthem,andthey^qcryouttome,Iwillsurely^rheartheircry,24 andmywrathwillburn,andIwillkillyouwiththesword,and^syourwivesshallbecomewidowsandyourchildrenfatherless.

25 ^t“Ifyoulendmoneytoanyofmypeoplewithyouwhoispoor,youshallnotbelikeamoneylendertohim,andyoushallnotexactinterestfromhim.26 ^uIfeveryoutakeyourneighbor’scloakinpledge,youshallreturnittohimbeforethesungoesdown,27 forthatishisonlycovering,anditishiscloakforhisbody;inwhatelseshallhesleep?Andifhe^qcriestome,Iwillhear,forIam^vcompassionate.

28 ^w“YoushallnotrevileGod,nor^wcursearulerofyourpeople.

29 “Youshallnotdelaytoofferfromthefullnessofyourharvestandfromtheoutflowofyourpresses.^xThefirstbornofyoursonsyoushallgivetome.30 ^yYoushalldothesamewithyouroxenandwithyoursheep:^zsevendaysitshallbewithitsmother;ontheeighthdayyoushallgiveittome.

31 ^a“Youshallbeconsecratedtome.Therefore^byoushallnoteatanyfleshthatistornbybeastsinthefield;^cyoushallthrowittothedogs.

23 ^d“Youshallnotspreadafalsereport.Youshallnotjoinhandswithawickedmantobea^emaliciouswitness.2 Youshallnotfallinwiththemanytodoevil,norshallyoubearwitnessinalawsuit,sidingwiththemany,soastopervertjustice,3 ^fnorshallyoubepartialtoapoormaninhislawsuit.

4 ^g“Ifyoumeetyourenemy’soxorhisdonkeygoingastray,youshallbringitbacktohim.5 Ifyouseethedonkeyofonewhohatesyoulyingdownunderitsburden,youshallrefrainfromleavinghimwithit;youshallrescueitwithhim.

6 ^h“Youshallnotpervertthejusticeduetoyourpoorinhislawsuit.7 ^dKeepfarfromafalsecharge,andⁱdonotkilltheinnocentandrighteous,for^jIwillnotacquitthewicked.8 ^kAndyoushalltakenobribe,forabribeblindstheclear-sightedandsubvertsthecauseofthosewhoareintheright.

9 ^l“Youshallnotoppressasojourner.Youknowtheheartofasojourner,foryouweresojournersinthelandofEgypt.

12 ⁿ“Sixdaysyoushalldoyourwork,butontheseventhdayyoushallrest;thatyouroxandyourdonkeymayhaverest,andthesonofyourservantwoman,andthealien,mayberefreshed.

13 ^o“PayattentiontoallthatIhavesaidtoyou,andmakenomentionofthenamesofothergods,norletitbeheardonyourlips.

14 ^p“Threetimesintheyearyoushallkeepafeasttome.15 ^qYoushallkeeptheFeastofUnleavenedBread.AsIcommandedyou,youshalleatunleavenedbreadforsevendaysattheappointedtimeinthemonthof^rAbib,forinityoucameoutofEgypt.^sNoneshallappearbeforemeempty-handed.16 Youshallkeep^ttheFeastofHarvest,ofthefirstfruitsofyourlabor,ofwhatyousowinthefield.Youshallkeepthe^uFeastofIngatheringattheendoftheyear,whenyougatherinfromthefieldthefruitofyourlabor.17 ^pThreetimesintheyearshallallyourmalesappearbeforetheLordGod.

18 ^v“Youshallnotofferthebloodofmysacrificewithanythingleavened,orletthefatofmyfeastremainuntilthemorning.

19 “Thebestofthe^wfirstfruitsofyourgroundyoushallbringintothehouseoftheLordyourGod.

^x“Youshallnotboilayounggoatinitsmother’smilk.

20 ^y“Behold,IsendanangelbeforeyoutoguardyouonthewayandtobringyoutotheplacethatIhaveprepared.21 Paycarefulattentiontohimandobeyhisvoice;^zdonotrebelagainsthim,^aforhewillnotpardonyourtransgression,formynameisinhim.
