AndtheLordafflictedthechildthatUriah’swifeboretoDavid,andhebecamesick.16 DavidthereforesoughtGodonbehalfofthechild.AndDavid^lfastedandwentin^mandlayallnightontheground.17 Andtheeldersofhishousestoodbesidehim,toraisehimfromtheground,buthewouldnot,nordidheeatfoodwiththem.18 Ontheseventhdaythechilddied.AndtheservantsofDavidwereafraidtotellhimthatthechildwasdead,fortheysaid,“Behold,whilethechildwasyetalive,wespoketohim,andhedidnotlistentous.Howthencanwesaytohimthechildisdead?Hemaydohimselfsomeharm.”19 ButwhenDavidsawthathisservantswerewhisperingtogether,Davidunderstoodthatthechildwasdead.AndDavidsaidtohisservants,“Isthechilddead?”Theysaid,“Heisdead.”20 ThenDavidarosefromtheearthⁿandwashedandanointedhimselfandchangedhisclothes.AndhewentintothehouseoftheLord^oandworshiped.Hethenwenttohisownhouse.Andwhenheasked,theysetfoodbeforehim,andheate.21 Thenhisservantssaidtohim,“Whatisthisthingthatyouhavedone?Youfastedandweptforthechildwhilehewasalive;butwhenthechilddied,youaroseandatefood.”22 Hesaid,“Whilethechildwasstillalive,Ifastedandwept,forIsaid,^p‘WhoknowswhethertheLordwillbegracioustome,thatthechildmaylive?’23 Butnowheisdead.WhyshouldIfast?CanIbringhimbackagain?Ishallgotohim,^qbuthewillnotreturntome.”

24 ThenDavidcomfortedhiswife,Bathsheba,andwentintoherandlaywithher,and^rsheboreason,andhecalledhisname^sSolomon.AndtheLordlovedhim25 andsentamessagebyNathantheprophet.SohecalledhisnameJedidiah,³becauseoftheLord.

15 ThenAmnonhatedherwithverygreathatred,sothatthehatredwithwhichhehatedherwasgreaterthanthelovewithwhichhehadlovedher.AndAmnonsaidtoher,“Getup!Go!”16 Butshesaidtohim,“No,mybrother,forthiswronginsendingmeawayisgreaterthantheotherthatyoudidtome.”²Buthewouldnotlistentoher.17 Hecalledtheyoungmanwhoservedhimandsaid,“Putthiswomanoutofmypresenceandboltthedoorafterher.”18 Nowshewaswearing^ealongrobewithsleeves,³forthuswerethevirgindaughtersofthekingdressed.Sohisservantputheroutandboltedthedoorafterher.19 AndTamar^fputashesonherheadand^gtorethelongrobethatshewore.And^hshelaidherhandonherheadandwentaway,cryingaloudasshewent.

20 AndherbrotherAbsalomsaidtoher,“HasAmnonyourbrotherbeenwithyou?Nowholdyourpeace,mysister.Heisyourbrother;donottakethistoheart.”SoTamarlived,adesolatewoman,inherbrotherAbsalom’shouse.21 WhenKingDavidheardofallthesethings,hewasveryangry.⁴22 ButAbsalomspoketoAmnonⁱneithergoodnorbad,forAbsalomhatedAmnon,becausehehadviolatedhissisterTamar.

Absalom Murders Amnon

23 AftertwofullyearsAbsalomhad^jsheepshearersatBaal-hazor,whichisnearEphraim,andAbsalominvitedalltheking’ssons.24 AndAbsalomcametothekingandsaid,“Behold,yourservanthassheepshearers.Pleaseletthekingandhisservantsgowithyourservant.”25 ButthekingsaidtoAbsalom,“No,myson,letusnotallgo,lestwebeburdensometoyou.”Hepressedhim,buthewouldnotgobutgavehimhisblessing.26 ThenAbsalomsaid,“Ifnot,pleaseletmybrotherAmnongowithus.”Andthekingsaidtohim,“Whyshouldhegowithyou?”27 ButAbsalompressedhimuntilheletAmnonandalltheking’ssonsgowithhim.28 ThenAbsalomcommandedhisservants,“MarkwhenAmnon’s^kheartismerrywithwine,andwhenIsaytoyou,‘StrikeAmnon,’thenkillhim.Donotfear;haveInotcommandedyou?Becourageousandbevaliant.”29 SotheservantsofAbsalomdidtoAmnonasAbsalomhadcommanded.Thenalltheking’ssonsarose,andeachmountedhismuleandfled.

30 Whiletheywereontheway,newscametoDavid,“Absalomhasstruckdownalltheking’ssons,andnotoneofthemisleft.”31 Thenthekingaroseand^ltorehisgarmentsand^mlayontheearth.Andallhisservantswhowerestandingbytoretheirgarments.32 ButⁿJonadabthesonofShimeah,David’sbrother,said,“Letnotmylordsupposethattheyhavekilledalltheyoungmen,theking’ssons,forAmnonaloneisdead.ForbythecommandofAbsalomthishasbeendeterminedfromthedayheviolatedhissisterTamar.33 Nowthereforeletnotmylordthekingso^otakeittoheartastosupposethatalltheking’ssonsaredead,forAmnonaloneisdead.”

Absalom Flees to Geshur

34 ^pButAbsalomfled.Andtheyoungmanwhokeptthewatchlifteduphiseyesandlooked,andbehold,manypeoplewerecomingfromtheroadbehindhim⁵bythesideofthemountain.35 AndJonadabsaidtotheking,“Behold,theking’ssonshavecome;asyourservantsaid,soithascomeabout.”36 Andassoonashehadfinishedspeaking,behold,theking’ssonscameandlifteduptheirvoiceandwept.Andthekingalsoandallhisservantsweptverybitterly.

37 ^qButAbsalomfledandwentto^rTalmaithesonofAmmihud,kingof^sGeshur.AndDavidmournedforhissondayafterday.38 ^qSoAbsalomfledandwenttoGeshur,andwastherethreeyears.39 Andthespiritoftheking⁶longedtogoout⁷toAbsalom,because^thewascomfortedaboutAmnon,sincehewasdead.

Absalom Returns to Jerusalem

14 NowJoabthesonofZeruiahknew^uthattheking’sheartwentouttoAbsalom.2 AndJoabsentto^vTekoaandbroughtfromthereawisewomanandsaidtoher,“Pretendtobeamournerandputonmourninggarments.^wDonotanointyourselfwithoil,butbehavelikeawomanwhohasbeenmourningmanydaysforthedead.3 Gotothekingandspeakthustohim.”SoJoab^xputthewordsinhermouth.

4 WhenthewomanofTekoacametotheking,^yshefellonherfacetothegroundandpaidhomageandsaid,^z“Saveme,Oking.”5 Andthekingsaidtoher,“Whatisyourtrouble?”Sheanswered,^a“Alas,Iamawidow;myhusbandisdead.6 Andyourservanthadtwosons,andtheyquarreledwithoneanotherinthefield.Therewasnoonetoseparatethem,andonestrucktheotherandkilledhim.7 Andnowthewholeclanhasrisenagainstyourservant,andtheysay,‘Giveupthemanwhostruckhisbrother,thatwemayputhimtodeathforthelifeofhisbrotherwhomhekilled.’Andsotheywould^bdestroytheheiralso.Thustheywouldquenchmycoalthatisleftandleavetomyhusbandneithernamenor^cremnantonthefaceoftheearth.”

8 Thenthekingsaidtothewoman,“Gotoyourhouse,andIwillgiveordersconcerningyou.”9 AndthewomanofTekoasaidtotheking,^d“Onmebetheguilt,mylordtheking,andonmyfather’shouse;letthekingandhisthronebeguiltless.”10 Thekingsaid,“Ifanyonesaysanythingtoyou,bringhimtome,andheshallnevertouchyouagain.”11 Thenshesaid,“PleaseletthekinginvoketheLordyourGod,that^etheavengerofbloodkillnomore,andmysonbenotdestroyed.”Hesaid,^f“AstheLordlives,^gnotonehairofyoursonshallfalltotheground.”

12 Thenthewomansaid,“Pleaseletyourservantspeakawordtomylordtheking.”Hesaid,“Speak.”13 Andthewomansaid,“Whythenhaveyouplannedsuchathingagainst^hthepeopleofGod?Foringivingthisdecisionthekingconvictshimself,inasmuchasthekingdoesnotbringⁱhisbanishedonehomeagain.14 Wemustalldie;weare^jlikewaterspilledontheground,whichcannotbegatheredupagain.ButGodwillnottakeawaylife,andhedevisesmeans^ksothatthebanishedonewillnotremainanoutcast.15 NowIhavecometosaythistomylordthekingbecausethepeoplehavemademeafraid,andyourservantthought,‘Iwillspeaktotheking;itmaybethatthekingwillperformtherequestofhisservant.16 Forthekingwillhearanddeliverhisservantfromthehandofthemanwhowoulddestroymeandmysontogetherfrom^ltheheritageofGod.’17 Andyourservantthought,‘Thewordofmylordthekingwillsetmeatrest,’formylordthekingis^mliketheangelofGodtodiscerngoodandevil.TheLordyourGodbewithyou!”

18 Thenthekingansweredthewoman,“DonothidefrommeanythingIaskyou.”Andthewomansaid,“Letmylordthekingspeak.”19 Thekingsaid,“IsthehandofJoabwithyouinallthis?”Thewomanansweredandsaid,ⁿ“Assurelyasyoulive,mylordtheking,onecannotturntotherighthandortotheleftfromanythingthatmylordthekinghassaid.ItwasyourservantJoabwhocommandedme;^oitwashewhoputallthesewordsinthemouthofyourservant.20 InordertochangethecourseofthingsyourservantJoabdidthis.Butmylordhaswisdomlikethewisdomof^mtheangelofGodtoknowallthingsthatareontheearth.”

21 ThenthekingsaidtoJoab,“Beholdnow,Igrantthis;go,bringbacktheyoungmanAbsalom.”22 AndJoabfellonhisfacetothegroundandpaidhomage^pandblessedtheking.AndJoabsaid,“TodayyourservantknowsthatIhavefoundfavorinyoursight,mylordtheking,inthatthekinghasgrantedtherequestofhisservant.”23 SoJoabaroseandwentto^qGeshurandbroughtAbsalomtoJerusalem.24 Andthekingsaid,“Lethimdwellapartinhisownhouse;heisnottocomeintomypresence.”SoAbsalomlivedapartinhisownhouseanddidnotcomeintotheking’spresence.

25 NowinallIsraeltherewasnoonesomuchtobepraisedforhishandsomeappearanceasAbsalom.^rFromthesoleofhisfoottothecrownofhisheadtherewasnoblemishinhim.26 Andwhenhecutthehairofhishead(forattheendofeveryyearheusedtocutit;whenitwasheavyonhim,he^scutit),heweighedthehairofhishead,twohundredshekels¹bytheking’sweight.27 Therewereborn^ttoAbsalomthreesons,andonedaughterwhosenamewasTamar.Shewasabeautifulwoman.

28 SoAbsalomlivedtwofullyearsinJerusalem,withoutcomingintotheking’spresence.29 ThenAbsalomsentforJoab,tosendhimtotheking,butJoabwouldnotcometohim.Andhesentasecondtime,butJoabwouldnotcome.30 Thenhesaidtohisservants,“See,Joab’sfieldisnexttomine,andhehasbarleythere;goandsetitonfire.”SoAbsalom’sservantssetthefieldonfire.²31 ThenJoabaroseandwenttoAbsalomathishouseandsaidtohim,“Whyhaveyourservantssetmyfieldonfire?”32 AbsalomansweredJoab,“Behold,Isentwordtoyou,‘Comehere,thatImaysendyoutotheking,toask,“WhyhaveIcomefrom^qGeshur?Itwouldbebetterformetobetherestill.”Nowthereforeletmegointothepresenceoftheking,^uandifthereisguiltinme,lethimputmetodeath.’”33 ThenJoabwenttothekingandtoldhim,andhesummonedAbsalom.Sohecametothekingandbowedhimselfonhisfacetothegroundbeforetheking,andthekingkissedAbsalom.

Absalom’s Conspiracy

15 AfterthisAbsalom^vgothimselfachariotandhorses,andfiftymentorunbeforehim.2 AndAbsalomusedtoriseearlyandstandbeside^wthewayofthegate.Andwhenanymanhadadisputetocomebeforethekingforjudgment,Absalomwouldcalltohimandsay,“Fromwhatcityareyou?”Andwhenhesaid,“YourservantisofsuchandsuchatribeinIsrael,”3 Absalomwouldsaytohim,“See,yourclaimsaregoodandright,butthereisnomandesignatedbythekingtohearyou.”4 ThenAbsalomwouldsay,^x“OhthatIwerejudgeintheland!Theneverymanwithadisputeorcausemightcometome,andIwouldgivehimjustice.”5 Andwheneveramancameneartopayhomagetohim,hewouldputouthishandandtakeholdofhimandkisshim.6 ThusAbsalomdidtoallofIsraelwhocametothekingforjudgment.SoAbsalomstoletheheartsofthemenofIsrael.

7 Andattheendoffour¹yearsAbsalomsaidtotheking,“Pleaseletmegoandpaymyvow,whichIhavevowedtotheLord,inHebron.8 Foryourservant^zvowedavow^awhileIlivedatGeshurinAram,saying,‘IftheLordwillindeedbringmebacktoJerusalem,thenIwillofferworshipto²theLord.’”9 Thekingsaidtohim,^b“Goinpeace.”SohearoseandwenttoHebron.10 ButAbsalomsentsecretmessengersthroughoutallthetribesofIsrael,saying,“Assoonasyouhearthesoundofthetrumpet,thensay,‘AbsalomiskingatHebron!’”11 WithAbsalomwenttwohundredmenfromJerusalem^cwhowereinvitedguests,andtheywentintheirinnocenceandknewnothing.12 AndwhileAbsalomwasofferingthesacrifices,hesentfor^3dAhithopheltheGilonite,^eDavid’scounselor,fromhiscity^fGiloh.Andtheconspiracygrewstrong,andthepeoplewithAbsalom^gkeptincreasing.
