12 AndSamuelsaidtoallIsrael,“Behold,Ihaveobeyednyourvoiceinallthatyouhavesaidtomeoandhavemadeakingoveryou.2 Andnow,behold,thekingpwalksbeforeyou,qandIamoldandgray;andbehold,mysonsarewithyou.Ihavewalkedbeforeyoufrommyyouthuntilthisday.3 HereIam;testifyagainstmebeforetheLordandbeforerhisanointed.sWhoseoxhaveItaken?OrwhosedonkeyhaveItaken?OrwhomhaveIdefrauded?WhomhaveIoppressed?OrfromwhosehandhaveItakenabribetoblindmyeyeswithit?Testifyagainstme1andIwillrestoreittoyou.”4 Theysaid,“Youhavenotdefraudedusoroppressedusortakenanythingfromanyman’shand.”5 Andhesaidtothem,“TheLordiswitnessagainstyou,andrhisanointediswitnessthisday,thatyouhavenotfoundanythingtinmyhand.”Andtheysaid,“Heiswitness.”
6 AndSamuelsaidtothepeople,u“TheLordiswitness,2whoappointedMosesandAaronandbroughtyourfathersupoutofthelandofEgypt.7 NowthereforestandstillthatImaypleadwithyoubeforetheLordconcerningalltherighteousdeedsoftheLordthatheperformedforyouandforyourfathers.8 vWhenJacobwentintoEgypt,andtheEgyptiansoppressedthem,3wthenyourfatherscriedouttotheLordandxtheLordsentMosesandAaron,ywhobroughtyourfathersoutofEgyptandmadethemdwellinthisplace.9 ButztheyforgottheLordtheirGod.aAndhesoldthemintothehandofSisera,commanderofthearmyofHazor,4bandintothehandofthePhilistines,candintothehandofthekingofMoab.Andtheyfoughtagainstthem.10 dAndtheycriedouttotheLordandsaid,‘Wehavesinned,becausewehaveforsakentheLordeandhaveservedtheBaalsandtheAshtaroth.Butnowfdeliverusoutofthehandofourenemies,thatwemayserveyou.’11 AndtheLordsentgJerubbaalhandBarak5iandJephthahandjSamuelanddeliveredyououtofthehandofyourenemiesoneveryside,andyoulivedinsafety.12 AndwhenyousawthatkNahashthekingoftheAmmonitescameagainstyou,lyousaidtome,‘No,butakingshallreignoverus,’mwhentheLordyourGodwasyourking.13 Andnownbeholdthekingwhomyouhavechosen,forwhomyouhaveasked;behold,otheLordhassetakingoveryou.14 IfyouwillpfeartheLordandservehimandobeyhisvoiceandnotrebelagainstthecommandmentoftheLord,andifbothyouandthekingwhoreignsoveryouwillfollowtheLordyourGod,itwillbewell.15 ButqifyouwillnotobeythevoiceoftheLord,butrebelagainstthecommandmentoftheLord,thenrthehandoftheLordwillbeagainstyouandsyourking.616 NowthereforetstandstillandseethisgreatthingthattheLordwilldobeforeyoureyes.17 uIsitnotwheatharvesttoday?vIwillcallupontheLord,thathemaysendthunderandrain.Andyoushallknowandseethatwyourwickednessisgreat,whichyouhavedoneinthesightoftheLord,inaskingforyourselvesaking.”18 SoSamuelcalledupontheLord,andtheLordsentthunderandrainthatday,xandallthepeoplegreatlyfearedtheLordandSamuel.
19 AndallthepeoplesaidtoSamuel,y“PrayforyourservantstotheLordyourGod,thatwemaynotdie,forwehaveaddedtoalloursinsthisevil,toaskforourselvesaking.”20 AndSamuelsaidtothepeople,“Donotbeafraid;youhavedoneallthisevil.YetzdonotturnasidefromfollowingtheLord,butservetheLordwithallyourheart.21 Andzdonotturnasideafteraemptythingsthatcannotprofitordeliver,fortheyareempty.22 bFortheLordwillnotforsakehispeople,cforhisgreatname’ssake,becausedithaspleasedtheLordtomakeyouapeopleforhimself.23 Moreover,asforme,farbeitfrommethatIshouldsinagainsttheLordbyceasingetoprayforyou,fandIwillinstructyouinthegoodandtherightway.24 gOnlyfeartheLordandservehimfaithfullywithallyourheart.Forconsiderhwhatgreatthingshehasdoneforyou.25 Butifyoustilldowickedly,iyoushallbesweptaway,jbothyouandyourking.”

13 Saullivedforoneyearandthenbecameking,andwhenhehadreignedfortwoyearsoverIsrael,12 SaulchosethreethousandmenofIsrael.TwothousandwerewithSaulinkMichmashandthehillcountryofBethel,andathousandwerewithJonathaninlGibeahofBenjamin.Therestofthepeoplehesenthome,everymantohistent.3 JonathandefeatedmthegarrisonofthePhilistinesthatwasnatGeba,andthePhilistinesheardofit.AndSauloblewthetrumpetthroughoutalltheland,saying,“LettheHebrewshear.”4 AndallIsraelhearditsaidthatSaulhaddefeatedthegarrisonofthePhilistines,andalsothatIsraelhadbecomeastenchtothePhilistines.AndthepeoplewerecalledouttojoinSaulatGilgal.
5 AndthePhilistinesmusteredtofightwithIsrael,thirtythousandchariotsandsixthousandhorsemenandtroopsplikethesandontheseashoreinmultitude.TheycameupandencampedinMichmash,totheeastofqBeth-aven.6 WhenthemenofIsraelsawthattheywereintrouble(forthepeoplewerehardpressed),thepeoplehidthemselvesrincavesandinholesandinrocksandintombsandincisterns,7 andsomeHebrewscrossedthefordsoftheJordantothelandofGadandGilead.SaulwasstillatGilgal,andallthepeoplefollowedhimtrembling.

8 sHewaitedsevendays,thetimeappointedbySamuel.ButSamueldidnotcometoGilgal,andthepeoplewerescatteringfromhim.9 SoSaulsaid,“Bringtheburntofferingheretome,andthepeaceofferings.”Andheofferedtheburntoffering.10 Assoonashehadfinishedofferingtheburntoffering,behold,Samuelcame.AndSaulwentouttomeethimandgreethim.11 Samuelsaid,“Whathaveyoudone?”AndSaulsaid,“WhenIsawthatthepeoplewerescatteringfromme,andthatyoudidnotcomewithinthedaysappointed,andthatthePhilistineshadmusteredatMichmash,12 Isaid,‘NowthePhilistineswillcomedownagainstmeatGilgal,andIhavenotsoughtthefavoroftheLord.’SoIforcedmyself,andofferedtheburntoffering.”13 AndSamuelsaidtoSaul,t“Youhavedonefoolishly.uYouhavenotkeptthecommandoftheLordyourGod,withwhichhecommandedyou.ForthentheLordwouldhaveestablishedyourkingdomoverIsraelforever.14 Butnowvyourkingdomshallnotcontinue.TheLordhassoughtoutamanwafterhisownheart,andtheLordhascommandedhimtobeprince2overhispeople,becauseyouhavenotkeptwhattheLordcommandedyou.”15 AndSamuelaroseandwentupfromGilgal.TherestofthepeoplewentupafterSaultomeetthearmy;theywentupfromGilgal3toxGibeahofBenjamin.
AndSaulnumberedthepeoplewhowerepresentwithhim,yaboutsixhundredmen.16 AndSaulandJonathanhissonandthepeoplewhowerepresentwiththemstayedinzGebaofBenjamin,butthePhilistinesencampedinMichmash.17 AndaraiderscameoutofthecampofthePhilistinesinthreecompanies.OnecompanyturnedtowardOphrah,tothelandofShual;18 anothercompanyturnedtowardbBeth-horon;andanothercompanyturnedtowardtheborderthatlooksdownontheValleyofcZeboimtowardthewilderness.
19 dNowtherewasnoblacksmithtobefoundthroughoutallthelandofIsrael,forthePhilistinessaid,“LesttheHebrewsmakethemselvesswordsorspears.”20 ButeveryoneoftheIsraeliteswentdowntothePhilistinestosharpenhisplowshare,hismattock,hisaxe,orhissickle,421 andthechargewastwo-thirdsofashekel5fortheplowsharesandforthemattocks,andathirdofashekel6forsharpeningtheaxesandforsettingthegoads.722 SoonthedayofthebattleetherewasneitherswordnorspearfoundinthehandofanyofthepeoplewithSaulandJonathan,butSaulandJonathanhissonhadthem.23 AndfthegarrisonofthePhilistineswentouttothegpassofhMichmash.

6 Jonathansaidtotheyoungmanwhocarriedhisarmor,“Come,letusgoovertothegarrisonofthesepuncircumcised.ItmaybethattheLordwillworkforus,qfornothingcanhindertheLordfromsavingbymanyorbyfew.”7 Andhisarmor-bearersaidtohim,“Doallthatisinyourheart.Doasyouwish.2Behold,Iamwithyouheartandsoul.”8 ThenJonathansaid,“Behold,wewillcrossovertothemen,andwewillshowourselvestothem.9 Iftheysaytous,‘Waituntilwecometoyou,’thenwewillstandstillinourplace,andwewillnotgouptothem.10 Butiftheysay,‘Comeuptous,’thenwewillgoup,fortheLordhasgiventhemintoourhand.Andthisshallbethesigntous.”11 SobothofthemshowedthemselvestothegarrisonofthePhilistines.AndthePhilistinessaid,“Look,Hebrewsarecomingroutoftheholeswheretheyhavehiddenthemselves.”12 AndthemenofthegarrisonhailedJonathanandhisarmor-bearerandsaid,“Comeuptous,andwewillshowyouathing.”AndJonathansaidtohisarmor-bearer,“Comeupafterme,fortheLordhasgiventhemintothehandofIsrael.”13 ThenJonathanclimbeduponhishandsandfeet,andhisarmor-bearerafterhim.AndtheyfellbeforeJonathan,andhisarmor-bearerkilledthemafterhim.14 Andthatfirststrike,whichJonathanandhisarmor-bearermade,killedabouttwentymenwithinasitwerehalfafurrow’slengthinanacre3ofland.15 Andtherewasapanicinthecamp,inthefield,andamongallthepeople.Thegarrisonandevenstheraiderstrembled,theearthquaked,anditbecameaverygreatpanic.4
16 AndthewatchmenofSaulinGibeahofBenjaminlooked,andbehold,themultitudetwasdispersinghereandthere.517 ThenSaulsaidtothepeoplewhowerewithhim,“Countandseewhohasgonefromus.”Andwhentheyhadcounted,behold,Jonathanandhisarmor-bearerwerenotthere.18 SoSaulsaidtoAhijah,“BringthearkofGodhere.”ForthearkofGodwentatthattimewiththepeople6ofIsrael.19 NowuwhileSaulwastalkingtothepriest,thetumultinthecampofthePhilistinesincreasedmoreandmore.SoSaulsaidtothepriest,“Withdrawyourhand.”20 ThenSaulandallthepeoplewhowerewithhimralliedandwentintothebattle.Andbehold,veveryPhilistine’sswordwasagainsthisfellow,andtherewasverygreatconfusion.21 NowtheHebrewswhohadbeenwiththePhilistinesbeforethattimeandwhohadgoneupwiththemintothecamp,weventheyalsoturnedtobewiththeIsraeliteswhowerewithSaulandJonathan.22 Likewise,whenallthemenofIsraelxwhohadhiddenthemselvesyinthehillcountryofEphraimheardthatthePhilistineswerefleeing,theytoofollowedhardaftertheminthebattle.23 zSotheLordsavedIsraelthatday.AndthebattlepassedbeyondaBeth-aven.

24 AndthemenofIsraelhadbeenhardpressedthatday,bsoSaulhadlaidanoathonthepeople,saying,“CursedbethemanwhoeatsfooduntilitiseveningandIamavengedonmyenemies.”Sononeofthepeoplehadtastedfood.25 Nowwhenallthepeople7cametotheforest,behold,therewashoneyontheground.26 Andwhenthepeopleenteredtheforest,behold,thehoneywasdropping,butnooneputhishandtohismouth,forthepeoplefearedtheoath.27 ButJonathanhadnotheardhisfatherchargethepeoplewiththeoath,csoheputoutthetipofthestaffthatwasinhishandanddippeditinthehoneycombandputhishandtohismouth,andhiseyesbecamebright.28 Thenoneofthepeoplesaid,“Yourfatherstrictlychargedthepeoplewithanoath,saying,‘Cursedbethemanwhoeatsfoodthisday.’”Andthepeopleweredfaint.29 ThenJonathansaid,“Myfatherhastroubledtheland.SeehowmyeyeshavebecomebrightbecauseItastedalittleofthishoney.30 Howmuchbetterifthepeoplehadeatenfreelytodayofthespoiloftheirenemiesthattheyfound.FornowthedefeatamongthePhilistineshasnotbeengreat.”
31 TheystruckdownthePhilistinesthatdayfromeMichmashtofAijalon.Andthepeoplewereverydfaint.32 Thepeoplegpouncedonthespoilandtooksheepandoxenandcalvesandslaughteredthemontheground.Andthepeopleatethemhwiththeblood.33 ThentheytoldSaul,“Behold,thepeoplearesinningagainsttheLordbyeatinghwiththeblood.”Andhesaid,“Youhavedealttreacherously;rollagreatstonetomehere.”834 AndSaulsaid,“Disperseyourselvesamongthepeopleandsaytothem,‘Leteverymanbringhisoxorhissheepandslaughterthemhereandeat,anddonotsinagainsttheLordbyeatingwiththeblood.’”Soeveryoneofthepeoplebroughthisoxwithhimthatnightandtheyslaughteredthemthere.35 AndSaulibuiltanaltartotheLord;itwasthefirstaltarthathebuilttotheLord.
36 ThenSaulsaid,“LetusgodownafterthePhilistinesbynightandplunderthemuntilthemorninglight;letusnotleaveamanofthem.”Andtheysaid,“Dowhateverseemsgoodtoyou.”Butjthepriestsaid,“LetusdrawneartoGodhere.”37 AndSaulinquiredofGod,“ShallIgodownafterthePhilistines?WillyougivethemintothehandofIsrael?”kButhedidnotanswerhimthatday.38 AndSaulsaid,“Comehere,allyouleadersofthepeople,andknowandseehowthissinhasarisentoday.39 ForlastheLordliveswhosavesIsrael,mthoughitbeinJonathanmyson,heshallsurelydie.”Buttherewasnotamanamongallthepeoplewhoansweredhim.40 ThenhesaidtoallIsrael,“Youshallbeononeside,andIandJonathanmysonwillbeontheotherside.”AndthepeoplesaidtoSaul,“Dowhatseemsgoodtoyou.”41 ThereforeSaulsaid,“OLordGodofIsrael,whyhaveyounotansweredyourservantthisday?IfthisguiltisinmeorinJonathanmyson,OLord,GodofIsrael,giveUrim.ButifthisguiltisinyourpeopleIsrael,giveThummim.”9nAndJonathanandSaulweretaken,butthepeopleescaped.42 ThenSaulsaid,n“CastthelotbetweenmeandmysonJonathan.”AndJonathanwastaken.
