12 AndSamuelsaidtoallIsrael,“Behold,Ihaveobeyedⁿyourvoiceinallthatyouhavesaidtome^oandhavemadeakingoveryou.2 Andnow,behold,theking^pwalksbeforeyou,^qandIamoldandgray;andbehold,mysonsarewithyou.Ihavewalkedbeforeyoufrommyyouthuntilthisday.3 HereIam;testifyagainstmebeforetheLordandbefore^rhisanointed.^sWhoseoxhaveItaken?OrwhosedonkeyhaveItaken?OrwhomhaveIdefrauded?WhomhaveIoppressed?OrfromwhosehandhaveItakenabribetoblindmyeyeswithit?Testifyagainstme¹andIwillrestoreittoyou.”4 Theysaid,“Youhavenotdefraudedusoroppressedusortakenanythingfromanyman’shand.”5 Andhesaidtothem,“TheLordiswitnessagainstyou,and^rhisanointediswitnessthisday,thatyouhavenotfoundanything^tinmyhand.”Andtheysaid,“Heiswitness.”

6 AndSamuelsaidtothepeople,^u“TheLordiswitness,²whoappointedMosesandAaronandbroughtyourfathersupoutofthelandofEgypt.7 NowthereforestandstillthatImaypleadwithyoubeforetheLordconcerningalltherighteousdeedsoftheLordthatheperformedforyouandforyourfathers.8 ^vWhenJacobwentintoEgypt,andtheEgyptiansoppressedthem,^3wthenyourfatherscriedouttotheLordand^xtheLordsentMosesandAaron,^ywhobroughtyourfathersoutofEgyptandmadethemdwellinthisplace.9 But^ztheyforgottheLordtheirGod.^aAndhesoldthemintothehandofSisera,commanderofthearmyofHazor,^4bandintothehandofthePhilistines,^candintothehandofthekingofMoab.Andtheyfoughtagainstthem.10 ^dAndtheycriedouttotheLordandsaid,‘Wehavesinned,becausewehaveforsakentheLord^eandhaveservedtheBaalsandtheAshtaroth.Butnow^fdeliverusoutofthehandofourenemies,thatwemayserveyou.’11 AndtheLordsent^gJerubbaal^handBarak⁵ⁱandJephthahand^jSamuelanddeliveredyououtofthehandofyourenemiesoneveryside,andyoulivedinsafety.12 Andwhenyousawthat^kNahashthekingoftheAmmonitescameagainstyou,^lyousaidtome,‘No,butakingshallreignoverus,’^mwhentheLordyourGodwasyourking.13 Andnowⁿbeholdthekingwhomyouhavechosen,forwhomyouhaveasked;behold,^otheLordhassetakingoveryou.14 Ifyouwill^pfeartheLordandservehimandobeyhisvoiceandnotrebelagainstthecommandmentoftheLord,andifbothyouandthekingwhoreignsoveryouwillfollowtheLordyourGod,itwillbewell.15 But^qifyouwillnotobeythevoiceoftheLord,butrebelagainstthecommandmentoftheLord,then^rthehandoftheLordwillbeagainstyouand^syourking.⁶16 Nowtherefore^tstandstillandseethisgreatthingthattheLordwilldobeforeyoureyes.17 ^uIsitnotwheatharvesttoday?^vIwillcallupontheLord,thathemaysendthunderandrain.Andyoushallknowandseethat^wyourwickednessisgreat,whichyouhavedoneinthesightoftheLord,inaskingforyourselvesaking.”18 SoSamuelcalledupontheLord,andtheLordsentthunderandrainthatday,^xandallthepeoplegreatlyfearedtheLordandSamuel.

19 AndallthepeoplesaidtoSamuel,^y“PrayforyourservantstotheLordyourGod,thatwemaynotdie,forwehaveaddedtoalloursinsthisevil,toaskforourselvesaking.”20 AndSamuelsaidtothepeople,“Donotbeafraid;youhavedoneallthisevil.Yet^zdonotturnasidefromfollowingtheLord,butservetheLordwithallyourheart.21 And^zdonotturnasideafter^aemptythingsthatcannotprofitordeliver,fortheyareempty.22 ^bFortheLordwillnotforsakehispeople,^cforhisgreatname’ssake,because^dithaspleasedtheLordtomakeyouapeopleforhimself.23 Moreover,asforme,farbeitfrommethatIshouldsinagainsttheLordbyceasing^etoprayforyou,^fandIwillinstructyouinthegoodandtherightway.24 ^gOnlyfeartheLordandservehimfaithfullywithallyourheart.Forconsider^hwhatgreatthingshehasdoneforyou.25 Butifyoustilldowickedly,ⁱyoushallbesweptaway,^jbothyouandyourking.”

Saul Fights the Philistines

13 Saullivedforoneyearandthenbecameking,andwhenhehadreignedfortwoyearsoverIsrael,¹2 SaulchosethreethousandmenofIsrael.TwothousandwerewithSaulin^kMichmashandthehillcountryofBethel,andathousandwerewithJonathanin^lGibeahofBenjamin.Therestofthepeoplehesenthome,everymantohistent.3 Jonathandefeated^mthegarrisonofthePhilistinesthatwasⁿatGeba,andthePhilistinesheardofit.AndSaul^oblewthetrumpetthroughoutalltheland,saying,“LettheHebrewshear.”4 AndallIsraelhearditsaidthatSaulhaddefeatedthegarrisonofthePhilistines,andalsothatIsraelhadbecomeastenchtothePhilistines.AndthepeoplewerecalledouttojoinSaulatGilgal.

5 AndthePhilistinesmusteredtofightwithIsrael,thirtythousandchariotsandsixthousandhorsemenandtroops^plikethesandontheseashoreinmultitude.TheycameupandencampedinMichmash,totheeastof^qBeth-aven.6 WhenthemenofIsraelsawthattheywereintrouble(forthepeoplewerehardpressed),thepeoplehidthemselves^rincavesandinholesandinrocksandintombsandincisterns,7 andsomeHebrewscrossedthefordsoftheJordantothelandofGadandGilead.SaulwasstillatGilgal,andallthepeoplefollowedhimtrembling.

Saul’s Unlawful Sacrifice

8 ^sHewaitedsevendays,thetimeappointedbySamuel.ButSamueldidnotcometoGilgal,andthepeoplewerescatteringfromhim.9 SoSaulsaid,“Bringtheburntofferingheretome,andthepeaceofferings.”Andheofferedtheburntoffering.10 Assoonashehadfinishedofferingtheburntoffering,behold,Samuelcame.AndSaulwentouttomeethimandgreethim.11 Samuelsaid,“Whathaveyoudone?”AndSaulsaid,“WhenIsawthatthepeoplewerescatteringfromme,andthatyoudidnotcomewithinthedaysappointed,andthatthePhilistineshadmusteredatMichmash,12 Isaid,‘NowthePhilistineswillcomedownagainstmeatGilgal,andIhavenotsoughtthefavoroftheLord.’SoIforcedmyself,andofferedtheburntoffering.”13 AndSamuelsaidtoSaul,^t“Youhavedonefoolishly.^uYouhavenotkeptthecommandoftheLordyourGod,withwhichhecommandedyou.ForthentheLordwouldhaveestablishedyourkingdomoverIsraelforever.14 Butnow^vyourkingdomshallnotcontinue.TheLordhassoughtoutaman^wafterhisownheart,andtheLordhascommandedhimtobeprince²overhispeople,becauseyouhavenotkeptwhattheLordcommandedyou.”15 AndSamuelaroseandwentupfromGilgal.TherestofthepeoplewentupafterSaultomeetthearmy;theywentupfromGilgal³to^xGibeahofBenjamin.

AndSaulnumberedthepeoplewhowerepresentwithhim,^yaboutsixhundredmen.16 AndSaulandJonathanhissonandthepeoplewhowerepresentwiththemstayedin^zGebaofBenjamin,butthePhilistinesencampedinMichmash.17 And^araiderscameoutofthecampofthePhilistinesinthreecompanies.OnecompanyturnedtowardOphrah,tothelandofShual;18 anothercompanyturnedtoward^bBeth-horon;andanothercompanyturnedtowardtheborderthatlooksdownontheValleyof^cZeboimtowardthewilderness.

19 ^dNowtherewasnoblacksmithtobefoundthroughoutallthelandofIsrael,forthePhilistinessaid,“LesttheHebrewsmakethemselvesswordsorspears.”20 ButeveryoneoftheIsraeliteswentdowntothePhilistinestosharpenhisplowshare,hismattock,hisaxe,orhissickle,⁴21 andthechargewastwo-thirdsofashekel⁵fortheplowsharesandforthemattocks,andathirdofashekel⁶forsharpeningtheaxesandforsettingthegoads.⁷22 Soonthedayofthebattle^etherewasneitherswordnorspearfoundinthehandofanyofthepeoplewithSaulandJonathan,butSaulandJonathanhissonhadthem.23 And^fthegarrisonofthePhilistineswentouttothe^gpassof^hMichmash.

Jonathan Defeats the Philistines

14 OnedayJonathanthesonofSaulsaidtotheyoungmanwhocarriedhisarmor,“Come,letusgoovertothePhilistinegarrisonontheotherside.”Buthedidnottellhisfather.2 SaulwasstayingintheoutskirtsofGibeahinthepomegranatecave¹at^hMigron.Thepeoplewhowerewithhimwereaboutⁱsixhundredmen,3 including^jAhijahthesonofAhitub,^kIchabod’sbrother,sonofPhinehas,sonofEli,thepriestoftheLord^linShiloh,^mwearinganephod.AndthepeopledidnotknowthatJonathanhadgone.4 Withinⁿthepasses,bywhichJonathansoughttogoovertothePhilistinegarrison,therewasarockycragontheonesideandarockycragontheotherside.ThenameoftheonewasBozez,andthenameoftheotherSeneh.5 TheonecragroseonthenorthinfrontofMichmash,andtheotheronthesouthinfrontof^oGeba.

6 Jonathansaidtotheyoungmanwhocarriedhisarmor,“Come,letusgoovertothegarrisonofthese^puncircumcised.ItmaybethattheLordwillworkforus,^qfornothingcanhindertheLordfromsavingbymanyorbyfew.”7 Andhisarmor-bearersaidtohim,“Doallthatisinyourheart.Doasyouwish.²Behold,Iamwithyouheartandsoul.”8 ThenJonathansaid,“Behold,wewillcrossovertothemen,andwewillshowourselvestothem.9 Iftheysaytous,‘Waituntilwecometoyou,’thenwewillstandstillinourplace,andwewillnotgouptothem.10 Butiftheysay,‘Comeuptous,’thenwewillgoup,fortheLordhasgiventhemintoourhand.Andthisshallbethesigntous.”11 SobothofthemshowedthemselvestothegarrisonofthePhilistines.AndthePhilistinessaid,“Look,Hebrewsarecoming^routoftheholeswheretheyhavehiddenthemselves.”12 AndthemenofthegarrisonhailedJonathanandhisarmor-bearerandsaid,“Comeuptous,andwewillshowyouathing.”AndJonathansaidtohisarmor-bearer,“Comeupafterme,fortheLordhasgiventhemintothehandofIsrael.”13 ThenJonathanclimbeduponhishandsandfeet,andhisarmor-bearerafterhim.AndtheyfellbeforeJonathan,andhisarmor-bearerkilledthemafterhim.14 Andthatfirststrike,whichJonathanandhisarmor-bearermade,killedabouttwentymenwithinasitwerehalfafurrow’slengthinanacre³ofland.15 Andtherewasapanicinthecamp,inthefield,andamongallthepeople.Thegarrisonandeven^stheraiderstrembled,theearthquaked,anditbecameaverygreatpanic.⁴

16 AndthewatchmenofSaulinGibeahofBenjaminlooked,andbehold,themultitude^twasdispersinghereandthere.⁵17 ThenSaulsaidtothepeoplewhowerewithhim,“Countandseewhohasgonefromus.”Andwhentheyhadcounted,behold,Jonathanandhisarmor-bearerwerenotthere.18 SoSaulsaidtoAhijah,“BringthearkofGodhere.”ForthearkofGodwentatthattimewiththepeople⁶ofIsrael.19 Now^uwhileSaulwastalkingtothepriest,thetumultinthecampofthePhilistinesincreasedmoreandmore.SoSaulsaidtothepriest,“Withdrawyourhand.”20 ThenSaulandallthepeoplewhowerewithhimralliedandwentintothebattle.Andbehold,^veveryPhilistine’sswordwasagainsthisfellow,andtherewasverygreatconfusion.21 NowtheHebrewswhohadbeenwiththePhilistinesbeforethattimeandwhohadgoneupwiththemintothecamp,^weventheyalsoturnedtobewiththeIsraeliteswhowerewithSaulandJonathan.22 Likewise,whenallthemenofIsrael^xwhohadhiddenthemselves^yinthehillcountryofEphraimheardthatthePhilistineswerefleeing,theytoofollowedhardaftertheminthebattle.23 ^zSotheLordsavedIsraelthatday.Andthebattlepassedbeyond^aBeth-aven.

Saul’s Rash Vow

24 AndthemenofIsraelhadbeenhardpressedthatday,^bsoSaulhadlaidanoathonthepeople,saying,“CursedbethemanwhoeatsfooduntilitiseveningandIamavengedonmyenemies.”Sononeofthepeoplehadtastedfood.25 Nowwhenallthepeople⁷cametotheforest,behold,therewashoneyontheground.26 Andwhenthepeopleenteredtheforest,behold,thehoneywasdropping,butnooneputhishandtohismouth,forthepeoplefearedtheoath.27 ButJonathanhadnotheardhisfatherchargethepeoplewiththeoath,^csoheputoutthetipofthestaffthatwasinhishandanddippeditinthehoneycombandputhishandtohismouth,andhiseyesbecamebright.28 Thenoneofthepeoplesaid,“Yourfatherstrictlychargedthepeoplewithanoath,saying,‘Cursedbethemanwhoeatsfoodthisday.’”Andthepeoplewere^dfaint.29 ThenJonathansaid,“Myfatherhastroubledtheland.SeehowmyeyeshavebecomebrightbecauseItastedalittleofthishoney.30 Howmuchbetterifthepeoplehadeatenfreelytodayofthespoiloftheirenemiesthattheyfound.FornowthedefeatamongthePhilistineshasnotbeengreat.”

31 TheystruckdownthePhilistinesthatdayfrom^eMichmashto^fAijalon.Andthepeoplewerevery^dfaint.32 Thepeople^gpouncedonthespoilandtooksheepandoxenandcalvesandslaughteredthemontheground.Andthepeopleatethem^hwiththeblood.33 ThentheytoldSaul,“Behold,thepeoplearesinningagainsttheLordbyeating^hwiththeblood.”Andhesaid,“Youhavedealttreacherously;rollagreatstonetomehere.”⁸34 AndSaulsaid,“Disperseyourselvesamongthepeopleandsaytothem,‘Leteverymanbringhisoxorhissheepandslaughterthemhereandeat,anddonotsinagainsttheLordbyeatingwiththeblood.’”Soeveryoneofthepeoplebroughthisoxwithhimthatnightandtheyslaughteredthemthere.35 AndSaulⁱbuiltanaltartotheLord;itwasthefirstaltarthathebuilttotheLord.

36 ThenSaulsaid,“LetusgodownafterthePhilistinesbynightandplunderthemuntilthemorninglight;letusnotleaveamanofthem.”Andtheysaid,“Dowhateverseemsgoodtoyou.”But^jthepriestsaid,“LetusdrawneartoGodhere.”37 AndSaulinquiredofGod,“ShallIgodownafterthePhilistines?WillyougivethemintothehandofIsrael?”^kButhedidnotanswerhimthatday.38 AndSaulsaid,“Comehere,allyouleadersofthepeople,andknowandseehowthissinhasarisentoday.39 For^lastheLordliveswhosavesIsrael,^mthoughitbeinJonathanmyson,heshallsurelydie.”Buttherewasnotamanamongallthepeoplewhoansweredhim.40 ThenhesaidtoallIsrael,“Youshallbeononeside,andIandJonathanmysonwillbeontheotherside.”AndthepeoplesaidtoSaul,“Dowhatseemsgoodtoyou.”41 ThereforeSaulsaid,“OLordGodofIsrael,whyhaveyounotansweredyourservantthisday?IfthisguiltisinmeorinJonathanmyson,OLord,GodofIsrael,giveUrim.ButifthisguiltisinyourpeopleIsrael,giveThummim.”⁹ⁿAndJonathanandSaulweretaken,butthepeopleescaped.42 ThenSaulsaid,ⁿ“CastthelotbetweenmeandmysonJonathan.”AndJonathanwastaken.

43 ThenSaulsaidtoJonathan,^o“Tellmewhatyouhavedone.”AndJonathantoldhim,^p“Itastedalittlehoneywiththetipofthestaffthatwasinmyhand.HereIam;Iwilldie.”44 AndSaulsaid,^q“Goddosotomeandmorealso;^ryoushallsurelydie,Jonathan.”45 ThenthepeoplesaidtoSaul,“ShallJonathandie,whohasworkedthisgreatsalvationinIsrael?Farfromit!^lAstheLordlives,^sthereshallnotonehairofhisheadfalltotheground,forhehasworkedwithGodthisday.”SothepeopleransomedJonathan,sothathedidnotdie.46 ThenSaulwentupfrompursuingthePhilistines,andthePhilistineswenttotheirownplace.

Saul Fights Israel’s Enemies

47 WhenSaulhadtakenthekingshipoverIsrael,hefoughtagainstallhisenemiesoneveryside,againstMoab,^tagainsttheAmmonites,againstEdom,againstthekingsof^uZobah,andagainstthePhilistines.Whereverheturnedheroutedthem.48 Andhedidvaliantly^vandstrucktheAmalekitesanddeliveredIsraeloutofthehandsofthosewhoplunderedthem.

49 ^wNowthesonsofSaulwereJonathan,Ishvi,andMalchi-shua.Andthenamesofhistwodaughterswerethese:thenameofthefirstbornwas^xMerab,andthenameoftheyoungerMichal.50 AndthenameofSaul’swifewasAhinoamthedaughterofAhimaaz.^yAndthenameofthecommanderofhisarmywasAbnerthesonofNer,^zSaul’suncle.51 ^aKishwasthefatherofSaul,andNerthefatherofAbnerwasthesonof^aAbiel.

52 TherewashardfightingagainstthePhilistinesallthedaysofSaul.AndwhenSaulsawanystrongman,oranyvaliantman,^bheattachedhimtohimself.

TheLord Rejects Saul

15 AndSamuelsaidtoSaul,^c“TheLordsentmetoanointyoukingoverhispeopleIsrael;nowthereforelistentothewordsoftheLord.2 ThussaystheLordofhosts,‘IhavenotedwhatAmalekdidtoIsrael^dinopposingthemonthewaywhentheycameupoutofEgypt.3 NowgoandstrikeAmalekand^edevotetodestruction¹allthattheyhave.Donotsparethem,^fbutkillbothmanandwoman,childandinfant,oxandsheep,camelanddonkey.’”

4 SoSaulsummonedthepeopleandnumberedtheminTelaim,twohundredthousandmenonfoot,andtenthousandmenofJudah.5 AndSaulcametothecityofAmalekandlayinwaitinthevalley.6 ThenSaulsaidto^gtheKenites,“Go,depart;godownfromamongtheAmalekites,lestIdestroyyouwiththem.^hForyoushowedkindnesstoallthepeopleofIsraelwhentheycameupoutofEgypt.”SotheKenitesdepartedfromamongtheAmalekites.7 ⁱAndSauldefeatedtheAmalekitesfrom^jHavilahasfaras^kShur,whichiseastofEgypt.8 AndhetookAgagthekingoftheAmalekitesalive^landdevotedtodestructionallthepeoplewiththeedgeofthesword.9 ^mButSaulandthepeoplesparedAgagandthebestofthesheepandoftheoxenandofthefattenedcalves²andthelambs,andallthatwasgood,andwouldnotutterlydestroythem.Allthatwasdespisedandworthlesstheydevotedtodestruction.

10 ThewordoftheLordcametoSamuel:11 ⁿ“Iregret³thatIhavemadeSaulking,forhehasturnedbackfromfollowingmeand^ohasnotperformedmycommandments.”AndSamuelwasangry,andhecriedtotheLordallnight.12 AndSamuelroseearlytomeetSaulinthemorning.AnditwastoldSamuel,“Saulcameto^pCarmel,andbehold,hesetupamonumentforhimselfandturnedandpassedonandwentdowntoGilgal.”13 AndSamuelcametoSaul,andSaulsaidtohim,^q“BlessedbeyoutotheLord.IhaveperformedthecommandmentoftheLord.”14 AndSamuelsaid,“WhatthenisthisbleatingofthesheepinmyearsandthelowingoftheoxenthatIhear?”15 Saulsaid,“TheyhavebroughtthemfromtheAmalekites,^rforthepeoplesparedthebestofthesheepandoftheoxentosacrificetotheLordyourGod,andtherestwehavedevotedtodestruction.”16 ThenSamuelsaidtoSaul,“Stop!IwilltellyouwhattheLordsaidtomethisnight.”Andhesaidtohim,“Speak.”
