Samuel’s Farewell Address

12 AndSamuelsaidtoallIsrael,Behold,Ihaveobeyednyourvoiceinallthatyouhavesaidtomeoandhavemadeakingoveryou.Andnow,behold,thekingpwalksbeforeyou,qandIamoldandgray;andbehold,mysonsarewithyou.Ihavewalkedbeforeyoufrommyyouthuntilthisday.HereIam;testifyagainstmebeforetheLordandbeforerhisanointed.sWhoseoxhaveItaken?OrwhosedonkeyhaveItaken?OrwhomhaveIdefrauded?WhomhaveIoppressed?OrfromwhosehandhaveItakenabribetoblindmyeyeswithit?Testifyagainstme1andIwillrestoreittoyou.Theysaid,Youhavenotdefraudedusoroppressedusortakenanythingfromanyman’shand.Andhesaidtothem,TheLordiswitnessagainstyou,andrhisanointediswitnessthisday,thatyouhavenotfoundanythingtinmyhand.Andtheysaid,Heiswitness.

AndSamuelsaidtothepeople,uTheLordiswitness,2whoappointedMosesandAaronandbroughtyourfathersupoutofthelandofEgypt.NowthereforestandstillthatImaypleadwithyoubeforetheLordconcerningalltherighteousdeedsoftheLordthatheperformedforyouandforyourfathers.vWhenJacobwentintoEgypt,andtheEgyptiansoppressedthem,3wthenyourfatherscriedouttotheLordandxtheLordsentMosesandAaron,ywhobroughtyourfathersoutofEgyptandmadethemdwellinthisplace.ButztheyforgottheLordtheirGod.aAndhesoldthemintothehandofSisera,commanderofthearmyofHazor,4bandintothehandofthePhilistines,candintothehandofthekingofMoab.Andtheyfoughtagainstthem.10 dAndtheycriedouttotheLordandsaid,Wehavesinned,becausewehaveforsakentheLordeandhaveservedtheBaalsandtheAshtaroth.Butnowfdeliverusoutofthehandofourenemies,thatwemayserveyou.11 AndtheLordsentgJerubbaalhandBarak5iandJephthahandjSamuelanddeliveredyououtofthehandofyourenemiesoneveryside,andyoulivedinsafety.12 AndwhenyousawthatkNahashthekingoftheAmmonitescameagainstyou,lyousaidtome,No,butakingshallreignoverus,mwhentheLordyourGodwasyourking.13 Andnownbeholdthekingwhomyouhavechosen,forwhomyouhaveasked;behold,otheLordhassetakingoveryou.14 IfyouwillpfeartheLordandservehimandobeyhisvoiceandnotrebelagainstthecommandmentoftheLord,andifbothyouandthekingwhoreignsoveryouwillfollowtheLordyourGod,itwillbewell.15 ButqifyouwillnotobeythevoiceoftheLord,butrebelagainstthecommandmentoftheLord,thenrthehandoftheLordwillbeagainstyouandsyourking.616 NowthereforetstandstillandseethisgreatthingthattheLordwilldobeforeyoureyes.17 uIsitnotwheatharvesttoday?vIwillcallupontheLord,thathemaysendthunderandrain.Andyoushallknowandseethatwyourwickednessisgreat,whichyouhavedoneinthesightoftheLord,inaskingforyourselvesaking.18 SoSamuelcalledupontheLord,andtheLordsentthunderandrainthatday,xandallthepeoplegreatlyfearedtheLordandSamuel.

19 AndallthepeoplesaidtoSamuel,yPrayforyourservantstotheLordyourGod,thatwemaynotdie,forwehaveaddedtoalloursinsthisevil,toaskforourselvesaking.20 AndSamuelsaidtothepeople,Donotbeafraid;youhavedoneallthisevil.YetzdonotturnasidefromfollowingtheLord,butservetheLordwithallyourheart.21 Andzdonotturnasideafteraemptythingsthatcannotprofitordeliver,fortheyareempty.22 bFortheLordwillnotforsakehispeople,cforhisgreatname’ssake,becausedithaspleasedtheLordtomakeyouapeopleforhimself.23 Moreover,asforme,farbeitfrommethatIshouldsinagainsttheLordbyceasingetoprayforyou,fandIwillinstructyouinthegoodandtherightway.24 gOnlyfeartheLordandservehimfaithfullywithallyourheart.Forconsiderhwhatgreatthingshehasdoneforyou.25 Butifyoustilldowickedly,iyoushallbesweptaway,jbothyouandyourking.

Saul Fights the Philistines

13 Saullivedforoneyearandthenbecameking,andwhenhehadreignedfortwoyearsoverIsrael,1SaulchosethreethousandmenofIsrael.TwothousandwerewithSaulinkMichmashandthehillcountryofBethel,andathousandwerewithJonathaninlGibeahofBenjamin.Therestofthepeoplehesenthome,everymantohistent.JonathandefeatedmthegarrisonofthePhilistinesthatwasnatGeba,andthePhilistinesheardofit.AndSauloblewthetrumpetthroughoutalltheland,saying,LettheHebrewshear.AndallIsraelhearditsaidthatSaulhaddefeatedthegarrisonofthePhilistines,andalsothatIsraelhadbecomeastenchtothePhilistines.AndthepeoplewerecalledouttojoinSaulatGilgal.

AndSaulnumberedthepeoplewhowerepresentwithhim,yaboutsixhundredmen.16 AndSaulandJonathanhissonandthepeoplewhowerepresentwiththemstayedinzGebaofBenjamin,butthePhilistinesencampedinMichmash.17 AndaraiderscameoutofthecampofthePhilistinesinthreecompanies.OnecompanyturnedtowardOphrah,tothelandofShual;18 anothercompanyturnedtowardbBeth-horon;andanothercompanyturnedtowardtheborderthatlooksdownontheValleyofcZeboimtowardthewilderness.

23 Forrebellionisasthesinofdivination,

andpresumptionisasiniquityandyidolatry.

BecausezyouhaverejectedthewordoftheLord,

ahehasalsorejectedyoufrombeingking.
