Warning Against Idleness

6 Nowwecommandyou,brothers,^sinthenameofourLordJesusChrist,^tthatyoukeepawayfromany^ubrother^vwhoiswalkinginidlenessandnotinaccordwiththetraditionthatyoureceivedfromus.7 Foryouyourselvesknow^whowyououghttoimitateus,because^xwewerenotidlewhenwewerewithyou,8 nordidweeatanyone’sbreadwithoutpayingforit,but^ywithtoilandlaborweworkednightandday,thatwemightnotbeaburdentoanyofyou.9 Itwas^znotbecausewedonothavethatright,buttogiveyouinourselves^aanexampletoimitate.10 Forevenwhenwewerewithyou,wewouldgiveyouthiscommand:^bIfanyoneisnotwillingtowork,lethimnoteat.11 Forwehearthatsomeamongyou^cwalkinidleness,notbusyatwork,but^dbusybodies.12 NowsuchpersonswecommandandencourageintheLordJesusChristtodotheirworkquietlyandtoearntheirownliving.⁴

13 Asforyou,brothers,^edonotgrowwearyindoinggood.14 Ifanyonedoesnotobeywhatwesayinthisletter,takenoteofthatperson,and^fhavenothingtodowithhim,thathemaybeashamed.15 ^gDonotregardhimasanenemy,but^hwarnhimasabrother.

Warning Against False Teachers

3 ^gAsIurgedyouwhenIwasgoingtoMacedonia,remainatEphesussothatyoumaychargecertainpersonsnot^htoteachanydifferentdoctrine,4 norⁱtodevotethemselvestomythsandendless^jgenealogies,whichpromote^kspeculationsratherthanthestewardship¹fromGodthatisbyfaith.5 Theaimofourchargeislove^lthatissuesfromapureheartand^magoodconscienceandⁿasincerefaith.6 Certainpersons,by^oswervingfromthese,havewanderedawayinto^pvaindiscussion,7 desiringtobeteachersofthelaw,^qwithoutunderstandingeitherwhattheyaresayingorthethingsaboutwhichtheymakeconfidentassertions.

8 Nowweknowthat^rthelawisgood,ifoneusesitlawfully,9 understandingthis,thatthe^slawisnotlaiddownforthejustbutforthelawlessanddisobedient,fortheungodlyandsinners,fortheunholyandprofane,forthosewhostriketheirfathersandmothers,formurderers,10 thesexuallyimmoral,menwhopracticehomosexuality,enslavers,²liars,perjurers,andwhateverelseiscontraryto^tsound³doctrine,11 inaccordancewith^uthegospelofthegloryof^vtheblessedGod^wwithwhichIhavebeenentrusted.

Christ Jesus Came to Save Sinners

12 Ithankhim^xwhohasgivenmestrength,ChristJesusourLord,becausehejudgedmefaithful,^yappointingmetohisservice,13 thoughformerlyIwasablasphemer,^zpersecutor,andinsolentopponent.But^aIreceivedmercy^bbecauseIhadactedignorantlyinunbelief,14 and^cthegraceofourLordoverflowedformewiththe^dfaithandlovethatareinChristJesus.15 Thesayingis^etrustworthyanddeservingoffullacceptance,thatChristJesus^fcameintotheworldtosavesinners,^gofwhomIamtheforemost.16 ButIreceivedmercyforthisreason,thatinme,astheforemost,JesusChristmightdisplayhisperfectpatienceasanexampletothosewhoweretobelieveinhimforeternallife.17 To^htheKingoftheages,ⁱimmortal,^jinvisible,^ktheonlyGod,^lbehonorandgloryforeverandever.⁴Amen.

Pray for All People

2 Firstofall,then,Iurgethatsupplications,prayers,intercessions,andthanksgivingsbemadeforallpeople,2 ^vforkingsandallwhoareinhighpositions,thatwemayleadapeacefulandquietlife,godlyand^wdignifiedineveryway.3 Thisisgood,and^xitispleasinginthesightof^yGodourSavior,4 whodesires^zallpeopletobesavedand^atocometo^btheknowledgeofthetruth.5 For^cthereisoneGod,andthereisonemediatorbetweenGodandmen,theman¹ChristJesus,6 ^dwhogavehimselfasaransomforall,whichis^ethetestimonygiven^fatthepropertime.7 ^gForthisIwasappointedapreacherandanapostle(^hIamtellingthetruth,Iamnotlying),ⁱateacheroftheGentilesinfaithandtruth.

8 Idesirethenthat^jineveryplacethemenshouldpray,^klifting^lholyhandswithoutangerorquarreling;9 likewisealso^mthatwomenshouldadornthemselvesinrespectableapparel,withmodestyandself-control,notwithbraidedhairandgoldorpearlsorcostlyattire,10 ⁿbutwithwhatisproperforwomenwhoprofessgodliness—withgoodworks.11 Letawomanlearnquietly^owithallsubmissiveness.12 ^pIdonotpermitawomantoteachortoexerciseauthorityoveraman;rather,sheistoremainquiet.13 ^qForAdamwasformedfirst,^rthenEve;14 andAdamwasnotdeceived,but^sthewomanwasdeceivedandbecameatransgressor.15 Yetshewillbesavedthrough^tchildbearing—iftheycontinuein^ufaithandloveandholiness,withself-control.

Qualifications for Overseers

3 Thesayingis^vtrustworthy:Ifanyoneaspiresto^wtheofficeofoverseer,hedesiresanobletask.2 Therefore^xanoverseer¹mustbeabovereproach,^ythehusbandofonewife,^2zsober-minded,self-controlled,respectable,^ahospitable,^babletoteach,3 notadrunkard,notviolentbut^cgentle,notquarrelsome,^dnotaloverofmoney.4 Hemustmanagehisownhouseholdwell,withalldignity^ekeepinghischildrensubmissive,5 forifsomeonedoesnotknowhowtomanagehisownhousehold,howwillhecarefor^wGod’schurch?6 Hemustnotbearecentconvert,orhemay^fbecomepuffedupwithconceitandfallintothecondemnationofthedevil.7 Moreover,hemustbewellthoughtofby^goutsiders,sothathemaynotfallintodisgrace,into^hasnareofthedevil.

Qualifications for Deacons

8 ⁱDeaconslikewisemustbedignified,notdouble-tongued,^3jnotaddictedtomuchwine,^knotgreedyfordishonestgain.9 Theymust^lholdthemysteryofthefaithwith^maclearconscience.10 Andⁿletthemalsobetestedfirst;thenletthemserveasdeaconsiftheyprovethemselvesblameless.11 ^oTheirwiveslikewise⁴mustbedignified,notslanderers,butsober-minded,^pfaithfulinallthings.12 Letdeaconseachbe^qthehusbandofonewife,^qmanagingtheirchildrenandtheirownhouseholdswell.13 For^rthosewhoservewellasdeaconsgainagoodstandingforthemselvesandalsogreatconfidenceinthefaiththatisinChristJesus.

14 Ihopetocometoyousoon,butIamwritingthesethingstoyousothat,15 ifIdelay,youmayknowhowoneoughttobehaveinthehouseholdofGod,whichisthechurchofthelivingGod,apillarandbuttressofthetruth.16 Greatindeed,weconfess,isthemysteryofgodliness:

4 Now^xtheSpiritexpresslysaysthat^yinlatertimessomewilldepartfromthefaithbydevotingthemselvesto^zdeceitfulspiritsandteachingsofdemons,2 throughtheinsincerityof^aliarswhoseconsciencesareseared,3 ^bwhoforbidmarriageand^crequireabstinencefromfoods^dthatGodcreated^etobereceivedwiththanksgivingbythosewhobelieveandknowthetruth.4 For^feverythingcreatedbyGodisgood,and^gnothingistoberejectedifitis^ereceivedwiththanksgiving,5 foritismadeholy^hbythewordofGodandprayer.

A Good Servant of Christ Jesus

6 ⁱIfyouputthesethingsbeforethebrothers,¹youwillbeagoodservantofChristJesus,beingtrainedinthewordsofthefaithandofthegooddoctrinethatyouhave^jfollowed.7 Havenothingtodowithirreverent,^ksillymyths.Rather^ltrainyourselfforgodliness;8 forwhile^mbodilytrainingisofsomevalue,godlinessⁿisofvalueineveryway,as^oitholdspromiseforthepresentlifeandalsoforthelifetocome.9 Thesayingis^ptrustworthyanddeservingoffullacceptance.10 Fortothisendwetoilandstrive,²becausewehaveourhopesetonthelivingGod,^qwhoistheSaviorofallpeople,especiallyofthosewhobelieve.

11 Commandandteach^rthesethings.12 ^sLetnoonedespiseyouforyouryouth,butsetthebelievers^tanexampleinspeech,inconduct,inlove,infaith,inpurity.13 UntilIcome,devoteyourselftothepublicreadingofScripture,toexhortation,toteaching.14 ^uDonotneglectthegiftyouhave,whichwasgivenyou^vbyprophecywhenthecouncilofelders^wlaidtheirhandsonyou.15 Practicethesethings,immerseyourselfinthem,³sothat^xallmayseeyourprogress.16 ^yKeepaclosewatchonyourselfandontheteaching.Persistinthis,forbysodoingyouwillsave^zbothyourselfand^ayourhearers.
