3 Likewise,wives,^kbesubjecttoyourownhusbands,sothat^levenifsomedonotobeytheword,^mtheymaybewonwithoutawordbytheconductoftheirwives,2 whentheyseeyourⁿrespectfulandpureconduct.3 ^oDonotletyouradorningbeexternal—thebraidingofhairandtheputtingonofgoldjewelry,ortheclothingyouwear—4 butletyouradorningbe^pthehiddenpersonoftheheartwiththeimperishablebeautyofagentleandquietspirit,whichinGod’ssightisveryprecious.5 ForthisishowtheholywomenwhohopedinGodusedtoadornthemselves,bysubmittingtotheirownhusbands,6 asSarahobeyedAbraham,^qcallinghimlord.Andyouareherchildren,ifyoudogoodand^rdonotfearanythingthatisfrightening.

7 Likewise,^shusbands,livewithyourwivesinanunderstandingway,showinghonortothewomanastheweaker^tvessel,sincetheyareheirswithyou¹ofthegraceoflife,sothatyourprayersmaynotbehindered.

Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake

8 Finally,allofyou,^uhaveunityofmind,sympathy,^vbrotherlylove,^watenderheart,and^xahumblemind.9 ^yDonotrepayevilforevilorrevilingforreviling,butonthecontrary,^zbless,for^atothisyouwerecalled,thatyoumayobtainablessing.10 For

13 Now^cwhoistheretoharmyouifyouarezealousforwhatisgood?14 ^dButevenifyoushouldsufferforrighteousness’sake,youwillbeblessed.^eHavenofearofthem,^fnorbetroubled,15 but^ginyourheartshonorChristtheLordasholy,^halwaysbeingpreparedtomakeadefensetoanyonewhoasksyouforareasonforthehopethatisinyou;yetdoitwithgentlenessandⁱrespect,16 ^jhavingagoodconscience,sothat,^kwhenyouareslandered,thosewhorevileyourgoodbehaviorinChristmaybeputtoshame.17 For^litisbettertosufferfordoinggood,ifthatshouldbeGod’swill,thanfordoingevil.

18 ForChristalso^msuffered²ⁿonceforsins,therighteousfortheunrighteous,^othathemightbringustoGod,beingputtodeath^pinthefleshbutmadealive^qinthespirit,19 inwhich³hewentand^qproclaimed⁴tothespiritsinprison,20 because⁵theyformerlydidnotobey,^rwhenGod’spatiencewaitedinthedaysofNoah,^swhilethearkwasbeingprepared,inwhichafew,thatis,^teightpersons,werebroughtsafelythroughwater.21 Baptism,whichcorrespondstothis,^unowsavesyou,notasaremovalofdirtfromthebodybut^vasanappealtoGodforagoodconscience,^wthroughtheresurrectionofJesusChrist,22 whohasgoneintoheavenand^xisattherighthandofGod,^ywithangels,authorities,andpowershavingbeensubjectedtohim.

Stewards of God’s Grace

4 Sincetherefore^zChristsufferedintheflesh,^1aarmyourselveswiththesamewayofthinking,for^bwhoeverhassufferedintheflesh^chasceasedfromsin,2 ^dsoastolivefor^etherestofthetimeintheflesh^fnolongerforhumanpassionsbut^gforthewillofGod.3 Forthetimethatispast^hsufficesⁱfordoingwhattheGentileswanttodo,livinginsensuality,passions,drunkenness,orgies,drinkingparties,andlawlessidolatry.4 Withrespecttothistheyaresurprisedwhenyoudonotjointheminthesamefloodof^jdebauchery,and^ktheymalignyou;5 buttheywillgiveaccounttohimwhoisready^ltojudgethelivingandthedead.6 Forthisiswhy^mthegospelwaspreachedeventothosewhoaredead,thatthoughjudgedinthefleshthewaypeopleare,theymightliveinthespiritthewayGoddoes.

7 ⁿTheendofallthingsisathand;therefore^obeself-controlledandsober-minded^pforthesakeofyourprayers.8 Aboveall,keeplovingoneanotherearnestly,since^qlovecoversamultitudeofsins.9 ^rShowhospitalitytooneanotherwithoutgrumbling.10 ^sAseachhasreceivedagift,useittoserveoneanother,^tasgoodstewardsofGod’svariedgrace:11 whoeverspeaks,asonewhospeaks^uoraclesofGod;whoeverserves,asonewhoserves^vbythestrengththatGodsupplies—inorderthatineverything^wGodmaybeglorifiedthroughJesusChrist.^xTohimbelonggloryand^ydominionforeverandever.Amen.

Suffering as a Christian

12 Beloved,donotbesurprisedat^zthefierytrialwhenitcomesuponyoutotestyou,asthoughsomethingstrangewerehappeningtoyou.13 Butrejoice^ainsofarasyoushareChrist’ssufferings,thatyoumayalsorejoiceandbeglad^bwhenhisgloryisrevealed.14 ^cIfyouareinsulted^dforthenameofChrist,youareblessed,becausetheSpiritofglory²andofGodrestsuponyou.15 But^eletnoneofyousufferasamurdererorathieforanevildoeror^fasameddler.16 Yet^eifanyonesuffersasa^gChristian,lethimnotbeashamed,butlethimglorifyGod^dinthatname.17 Foritistimeforjudgment^htobeginatthehouseholdofGod;andⁱifitbeginswithus,whatwillbetheoutcomeforthosewho^jdonotobeythegospelofGod?18 And

19 ThereforeletthosewhosufferaccordingtoGod’swill^lentrusttheirsoulstoafaithfulCreatorwhiledoinggood.

Shepherd the Flock of God

5 SoIexhorttheeldersamongyou,^masafellowelderandⁿawitnessofthesufferingsofChrist,aswellasapartakerintheglorythatisgoingtoberevealed:2 ^oshepherdtheflockofGodthatisamongyou,exercisingoversight,^1pnotundercompulsion,butwillingly,asGodwouldhaveyou;^2qnotforshamefulgain,buteagerly;3 not^rdomineeringoverthoseinyourcharge,but^sbeingexamplestotheflock.4 Andwhen^tthechiefShepherdappears,youwillreceivethe^uunfading^vcrownofglory.5 Likewise,youwhoareyounger,besubjecttotheelders.^wClotheyourselves,allofyou,withhumilitytowardoneanother,for^x“Godopposestheproudbutgivesgracetothehumble.”

6 ^xHumbleyourselves,therefore,underthemightyhandofGodsothatatthepropertimehemayexaltyou,7 ^ycastingallyouranxietiesonhim,because^zhecaresforyou.8 ^aBesober-minded;^bbewatchful.Your^cadversarythedevil^dprowlsaround^elikearoaringlion,seekingsomeonetodevour.9 ^fResisthim,^gfirminyourfaith,knowingthat^hthesamekindsofsufferingarebeingexperiencedbyyourbrotherhoodthroughouttheworld.10 Andⁱafteryouhavesufferedalittlewhile,theGodofallgrace,^jwhohascalledyoutohis^keternalgloryinChrist,willhimself^lrestore,^mconfirm,strengthen,andestablishyou.11 ⁿTohimbethedominionforeverandever.Amen.

Confirm Your Calling and Election

3 Hisdivinepowerhasgrantedtousallthingsthatpertaintolifeandgodliness,throughtheknowledgeofhim^fwhocalledusto³hisowngloryandexcellence,⁴4 bywhichhehasgrantedtoushispreciousandverygreatpromises,sothatthroughthemyoumaybecome^gpartakersofthedivinenature,^hhavingescapedfromthecorruptionthatisintheworldbecauseofsinfuldesire.5 Forthisveryreason,makeeveryefforttosupplementyourfaithⁱwithvirtue,⁵andvirtue^jwithknowledge,6 andknowledgewithself-control,andself-control^kwithsteadfastness,andsteadfastnesswithgodliness,7 andgodliness^lwithbrotherlyaffection,andbrotherlyaffection^mwithlove.8 Forifthesequalities⁶areyoursandareincreasing,theykeepyoufrombeingineffectiveorⁿunfruitfulintheknowledgeofourLordJesusChrist.9 Forwhoeverlacksthesequalitiesissonearsightedthathe^oisblind,havingforgottenthathewas^pcleansedfromhisformersins.10 Therefore,brothers,⁷beallthemorediligenttoconfirmyourcallingand^qelection,forifyoupracticethesequalities^ryouwillneverfall.11 Forinthiswaytherewillberichlyprovidedforyou^sanentranceintotheeternalkingdomofourLordandSaviorJesusChrist.

12 ThereforeIintend^talwaystoremindyouofthesequalities,thoughyouknowthemandareestablishedin^uthetruththatyouhave.13 Ithinkitright,aslongasIaminthis^vbody,^8wtostiryouupbywayofreminder,14 ^xsinceIknowthattheputtingoffofmybodywillbesoon,^yasourLordJesusChristmadecleartome.15 AndIwillmakeeveryeffortsothataftermydepartureyoumaybeableatanytimetorecallthesethings.

Christ’s Glory and the Prophetic Word

16 Forwedidnotfollow^zcleverlydevised^amythswhenwemadeknowntoyou^bthepowerand^ccomingofourLordJesusChrist,but^dwewereeyewitnessesofhismajesty.17 ForwhenhereceivedhonorandgloryfromGodtheFather,andthevoicewasbornetohimbytheMajesticGlory,^e“ThisismybelovedSon,⁹withwhomIamwellpleased,”18 weourselvesheardthisveryvoicebornefromheaven,forwewerewithhimon^ftheholymountain.19 And^gwehavethepropheticwordmorefullyconfirmed,towhichyouwilldowelltopayattention^hastoalampshininginadarkplace,untilⁱtheday^jdawnsandthemorningstarrisesinyourhearts,20 knowingthisfirstofall,thatnoprophecyofScripturecomesfromsomeone’sowninterpretation.21 For^knoprophecywaseverproducedbythewillofman,butmenspokefromGod^lastheywerecarriedalongbytheHolySpirit.

False Prophets and Teachers

2 But^mfalseprophetsalsoaroseamongthepeople,ⁿjustastherewillbefalseteachersamongyou,whowill^osecretlybringindestructiveheresies,evendenyingtheMaster^pwhoboughtthem,bringinguponthemselvesswiftdestruction.2 Andmanywillfollowtheirsensuality,andbecauseofthemthewayoftruth^qwillbeblasphemed.3 And^rintheirgreedtheywillexploityou^swithfalsewords.^tTheircondemnationfromlongagoisnotidle,andtheirdestructionisnotasleep.

4 ForifGoddidnotspare^uangelswhentheysinned,but^vcastthemintohell¹andcommittedthemtochains²ofgloomydarkness^wtobekeptuntilthejudgment;5 ifhedidnotsparetheancientworld,but^xpreservedNoah,aheraldofrighteousness,withsevenothers,whenhebrought^yafloodupontheworldoftheungodly;6 ifby^zturningthecitiesofSodomandGomorrahtoasheshecondemnedthemtoextinction,^amakingthemanexampleof^bwhatisgoingtohappentotheungodly;³7 and^cifherescuedrighteousLot,greatlydistressedbythesensualconductofthewicked8 (forasthatrighteousmanlivedamongthemdayafterday,^dhewastormentinghisrighteoussoulovertheirlawlessdeedsthathesawandheard);9 then^etheLordknowshowtorescuethegodlyfromtrials,⁴andtokeeptheunrighteousunderpunishmentuntilthedayofjudgment,10 andespecially^fthosewhoindulge⁵inthelustofdefilingpassionand^gdespiseauthority.

Boldandwillful,theydonottremble^gastheyblasphemethegloriousones,11 ^hwhereasangels,thoughgreaterinmightandpower,donotpronounceablasphemousjudgmentagainstthembeforetheLord.12 ⁱButthese,likeirrationalanimals,^jcreaturesofinstinct,borntobecaughtanddestroyed,blasphemingaboutmattersofwhichtheyareignorant,willalsobedestroyedintheirdestruction,13 sufferingwrongas^kthewagefortheirwrongdoing.Theycountitpleasure^ltorevelinthedaytime.Theyareblotsandblemishes,revelingintheirdeceptions,⁶while^mtheyfeastwithyou.14 Theyhaveeyesfullofadultery,⁷ⁿinsatiableforsin.Theyenticeunsteadysouls.Theyhavehearts^otrainedingreed.^pAccursedchildren!15 Forsakingtherightway,^qtheyhavegoneastray.Theyhavefollowed^rthewayofBalaam,thesonofBeor,wholoved^sgainfromwrongdoing,16 butwasrebukedforhisowntransgression;^taspeechlessdonkeyspokewithhumanvoiceandrestrainedtheprophet’smadness.

17 ^uThesearewaterlessspringsandmistsdrivenbyastorm.^vForthemthegloomofutterdarknesshasbeenreserved.18 For,^wspeakingloudboastsoffolly,theyenticebysensualpassionsofthefleshthosewhoarebarely^xescapingfromthosewholiveinerror.19 Theypromisethem^yfreedom,^zbuttheythemselvesareslaves⁸ofcorruption.Forwhateverovercomesaperson,tothatheisenslaved.20 Forif,^aaftertheyhaveescapedthedefilementsoftheworld^bthroughtheknowledgeofourLordandSaviorJesusChrist,theyareagainentangledinthemandovercome,^cthelaststatehasbecomeworseforthemthanthefirst.21 For^ditwouldhavebeenbetterforthemnevertohaveknownthewayofrighteousnessthanafterknowingittoturnbackfrom^etheholycommandmentdeliveredtothem.22 Whatthetrueproverbsayshashappenedtothem:“The^fdogreturnstoitsownvomit,andthesow,afterwashingherself,returnstowallowinthemire.”
