New Democracy lawmaker Thanos Plevris has been appointed Minister of Migration and Asylum replacing Makis Voridis who resigned amid a corruption probe over the mismanagement of European Union farming subsidies.

Other changes include the appointments of Haris Theocharis as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yiannis Andrianos as Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Food, and Christos Dermentzopoulos as Deputy Minister of Digital Governance, government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis announced on Saturday.

The case stems from the alleged mismanagement of EU subsidies for agriculture between 2019 and 2022 by a government agency, OPEKEPE, tasked with handling the funds. The case is being investigated by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Voridis, Deputy Foreign Minister Tasos Hatzivasileiou, Deputy Minister of Rural Development Dionysis Stamenitis, Deputy Minister of Digital Governance Christos Boukoros, and Secretary General of Rural Development and Food Giorgos Stratakos, all stepped down on Friday after the hefty case file was sent to Parliament earlier this week, containing allegations of the possible involvement of government ministers in the organized fraud scheme. Members of parliament enjoy immunity from prosecution in Greece that can only be lifted by parliamentary vote.

On Saturday, two more New Democracy officials stepped down after their names appeared in the case file. Andreas Karasarinis, secretary of the ruling party’s agricultural organizations, and Yiannis Troullinos, a member of its political committee, submitted their resignations to New Democracy’s Secretary of the Political Committee, Kostas Skrekas, who accepted them.

The swearing-in of the new ministers will be held on Monday, at 10 a.m., and a cabinet meeting will follow under Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at noon, the announcement said.
