EDF Powers the Future of Surfing at Lost Shore Surf Resort

Background

Lost Shore Surf Resort is the world’s first inland surf resort and a groundbreaking destination for surf enthusiasts. Set within the former Craigpark Quarry in Edinburgh, once barren and ecologically limited, and spanning three times the size of Wembley football pitch, it houses Europe’s largest wave pool, capable of generating up to 1,000 waves per hour using state-of-the-art technology.

With sustainability at the core of Lost Shore’s mission, the resort’s innovative wave generation technology is designed to be the most energy-efficient in the industry, consuming up to 10 times less energy per wave than conventional wave-producing facilities.

At its heart, Lost Shore strives for a net positive impact on society, with a long-term goal to continuously measure and improve its sustainability footprint.

The Challenge

Lost Shore came to EDF with a requirement for a reliable renewable energy supply to power its state-of-the-art surf facility, while aligning with its ambitious sustainability goals. The resort did not specify a particular renewable technology or generator but required assurance that the electricity supply would come from verifiable renewable sources.

Lost Shore’s key requirements included:

  • A strict renewable energy requirement
  • The need for a new energy connection with no historical consumption data
  • Flexibility in forecasting electricity consumption without penalties for under/over consumption
  • Assurance that REGOs (Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin) verified the source of the supplied energy
  • A smooth onboarding process with minimal disruptions

The Solution

EDF provided Lost Shore Surf Resort with a tailored green energy solution that ensured all electricity used at the site was sourced from renewable generation and backed by REGOs. The contract specifics included:

  • EDF’s Fixed + Standard, renewable-backed electricity product, ensuring stability and transparency in energy procurement
  • A shorter-term (10-month) contract with an easy renewal process, allowing flexibility as the resort refines its energy requirements
  • No volume tolerance penalties, enabling Lost Shore to manage its energy consumption without financial risk, despite the absence of historical data
  • A seamless onboarding process from the get-go, ensuring no operational delays
  • The security and expertise of a large supplier with exceptional customer service

The REGO scheme, administered by Ofgem, guarantees that the electricity supplied is genuinely renewable, providing transparency and credibility. EDF’s commitment to supporting emerging sustainable technologies aligns with Lost Shore’s carbon management strategy, ensuring a forward-thinking and responsible energy partnership.

Alejandro Padro, Impact & ESG Manager at Lost Shore Surf Resort, commented:

Partnering with EDF has enabled us to stay true to our sustainability mission while ensuring a reliable and flexible energy supply. As we continue to grow, we look forward to evolving our partnership with EDF, exploring opportunities for on-site renewable generation, storage solutions, and further energy efficiency initiatives.

Looking ahead, Lost Shore aims to deepen its sustainability efforts through ongoing collaboration with EDF. Potential future developments include integrating solar or wind energy solutions on-site, implementing smart energy management systems, and further optimising energy efficiency across resort operations. By fostering this partnership, Lost Shore Surf Resort and EDF are paving the way for a greener future in leisure and tourism.
