Jean-Marc Prieur writes concerning dating (The Anchor Bible Dictionary, v. 1, p. 246):
TheManichean Psalter, which contains some allusionsto the content ofActs Andr. (Allberry 1938: 142,143, 192), establishes the 3d century as theterminusad quem for the redaction of the apocryphon, but theActs had to have originated earlier, between 150 and200, closer to 150 than to 200. The distinctivechristology of the text, its silence concerning thehistorical and biblical Jesus, and its distance fromlater institutional organization and ecclesiasticalrites militate for an early dating. Moreover, itsserene tone and unawareness of any polemic againstsome of its ideas as heterodox, particularly in thearea of christology, show that it derived from aperiod when the christology of the Great Church hadnot yet taken firm shape. One might repeat here theline of argumentation employed by Junod and Kaestlifor locating theActs of John in the same period(1983: 695). Moreover,Acts John displays severalaffinities withActs Andr., such as the literarygenre, structure, and theological orientations.
