Notes

This is the first UK issue.

The main identifiers are:

- Outside laminated gatefold sleeve with 'Printed and Made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd.' (until about 1981).

- Inner sleeve: Copies bought in the first month of release feature a plain inner sleeve with 'Patent Nos. 1125555' text and 'Made In Great Britain' text in BLACK PRINT near the bottom on 1 side. Shortly after this LP was released (about July / August 1970) EMI introduced the 'Harvest' advertising inner sleeve. So with all copies made from this date onwards mostly having the 'Harvest' advertising inner sleeve instead. However, plain EMI inner sleeve were also used;

- Runouts: A2 / B1 (until about mid-1975). It is worth noting that variant 1 - 1st pressings with A-1 / B-1 matrixes are extremely rare on this LP. They were changed prior to the release date, with even most release date copies having A2 / B1 matrixes instead. Only 1 in 20 1st pressings have this matrix - with A2 / B1 matrix being used through all remaining 1st pressings, and many 2nd pressings also;

- The upper rim text begins with 'THE GRAMOPHONE CO LTD.' (until about May 1974);
- No 'EMI' logo on labels (until about June 1971);
- The inscription 'MADE IN GT. BRITAIN' on labels is separated of the lower rim text and centered above the circular bottom line (until about May 1974);
- Song listing in 3-lines for side A and in 4 lines for side B (until about the second half of 1972);
- The Ⓟ icon (under the 'Side A/B' indicator on labels) is about a third smaller than the year '1970' to the right of it (until about December 1970 / January 1971);
- Inscriptions (on the right side of the label) 'STEREO', 'SHVL 777' and '(SHVL.777A or B) 33 1/3' are located one above the other and have an equal gap between them.

Recording Studios:
IBC: Tracks A1, A3, B2, B3.
Abbey Road: Track A2.
De Lane Lea: Tracks B1, B4.

℗ 1970

Runouts are stamped.

    Best everything album. Still sounds great. Classic classic classic Child in Time is a timeless treat. Speed King is a great album opener

      My copy has the the A1-B1 matrix number. The "stereo SHVL 777" writing on the right side of each label has a smaller gap than shown in the photo and is more consistent with a 1970 repress.
      To my ears this sounds incredible, very dynamic and bright, particularly side one.

        I have a copy of this record with the label for Pink Floyd’s “Atom Heart Mother” on side B. The record plays Deep Purple In Rock on both sides. I can’t find any information about such a misprint. Does anyone know anything about it?

        I should say the label on side A is not exactly identical to ANY entry I can find here, but this entry is the only one where I can find a matrix runout that matches my copy (variant 11).

          This is not a good sounding record. It's hard to admit that the 1st UK press falls short of what it should represent, but if you want this particular press, bare in mind that it won't live up to your sonic expectations. To have it as a collectible is great, though :)

            The A1-B1 matrix number is incredibly difficult to find. The release page states that perhaps 1 in 20 copies have the very first matrix number. I'd say it's rather 1/100! The A2/B1 copy is not rare or hard to find at all, and shouldn't sell for more than perhaps €50 in Mint condition. Collecting nerd-ery aside, this is a killer record that simply won't grow old musically. It's hands down a 5 star album.

              Could anyone tell me why my version which has an EMI logo on the label ( matrix A-2 / B1 ) comes with the earliest original plain inner sleeve with the serial number '1125555' on it also with 'MADE INGREAT BRITAIN' on right side ?
              This seems to conflict with the descriptions and identifiers above.
              As far as I understand from this my copy should have the later EMI inner not the first issue plain inner.
              I am the only owner and bought it very early 70's. I can also state that this is original and has not been doctored in any way. i.e. mis-matched vinyl, cover or sleeve.
              Thanks all.
              Much appreciated

I Deep li ho quasi
                  tutti fino a "Come Taste the band", poi sono tutte compilation. Non avevo mai visto "In Rock" Gatefold,
                  in effetti era la prima stampa Uk.

                    First time pulling this record out in probably 4 years. This is the best album from Deep Purple, and frankly, I don't think it's close. The songwriting here is top-notch, and suits the production perfectly. Speaking of production, this is somewhat raw, yet still heavy as hell and hard-grooving. I've never understood why people are in love with machine head. I find that one to lack life and any kind organic feel. It's always just sounded stale to me idk. I think that's why the songs sound so much better on made in japan.
                    I think the reason I first ever listened to this record was for the album cover. It's so striking and a little goovy, in the best possible way. As an American, I've got to say that I think putting deep purple on Rushmore would be a total improvement over the presidents' faces on their now. Or how about we just get rid of it altogether and return the land to its rightful indigenous owners.
                    Anyways, best Deep Purple album.Yup. Classic.

                      One of the best examples of early rock you will find. With two new members (Ian Gillan and lRoger Glover) joining Ian Paice, Jon Lord and Ritchie Blackmore and all five on absolute top form.
                      Musicianship and songwriting of the highest order
