How Derby's biggest shopping site went from Main Centre to Derbion

What do you remember it as?

Derby's biggest shopping centre hastoday been renamed Derbion, which is the centre's third permanent name since opening in 2007.

Since new owners Cale Street Investments took over in September, it had been temporarily known asthe Derby Centre while work was under way to come up with the new permanent name.

Now the new name has been chosen, a complete rebrand of the entire building will take place, with new signs going up from March 1. The big signs on the outside of the building will be replaced in May.

So here at Derbyshire Live, we thought it would be a good time to look back on the history of the city centre's major shopping site.

First to arrive in the early 1960swas the Main Centre, which was a busy shopping precinct in its heyday.

Then alongside it came the Eagle Centre, a shopping mall built in 1971 by Coal Industry Nominees.

The Eagle Centre was rebuilt in the 1990s and was the city's main shopping centre until it was taken over by Westfield Shoppingtowns and Hermes Property Asset Management around 20 years ago.

The£340 million Westfield project swept away other familiar sights such as the Main Centre, Coliseum Centre and several properties on London Road opposite what is now the Cosmo Restaurant.

Westfield opened in October, 2007, following the giant refurbishment.

Property giant Intu then purchased the shopping centre in 2014 from Westfield.

Cale Street Investments owned half of the shopping centre prior toIntu going into administration last year, buying the other half from the administrators KPMG in the autumn.

Derby’s was the first of 17 Intu shopping centres to change hands after the previous owners failed to agree terms with creditors last June.

From today, the centre which is home to big name stores including Next and M&S, and leisure facilities like Showcase Cinema De Lux, and the 640-seat Derby Theatre will be known as Derbion.
