Setback for PPP-backed candidates in Larkana

LARKANA, Oct 6: In the last phase of the local body elections in Larkana and Qambar-Shahdadkot districts, PPP-backed candidates were roundly defeated by pro-government candidates on Thursday.

The KPP has virtually swept the polls in the two districts.

According to unofficial results gathered by Dawn, Mohammed Bakhsh Arijo and Nawab Shabir Ahmed Chandio of the KPP secured 277 and 250 votes, respectively, for the office of district nazim of Larkana and Qambar-Shahdadkot districts.

Mr Arijo’s opponent ADP’s Moazzam Abbasi obtained 252 votes while Mir Amir Magsi got 234 votes against Nawab Chandio.

The KPP not only won the seat of district nazim Larkana but also in three of the district’s four talukas — Larkana, Bakrani and Dokri.

Only in the Ratodero taluka, the ADP’s candidate Dr Shafqat Soomro won the nazim’s post by obtaining 60 votes and inflicted defeat on SNF’s candidate Ali Hassan Ghanghro who secured 52 votes.

In newly-created Qambar-Shahdadkot district, except in three talukas — Qubo Saeed Khan, Sujawal Junejo and Mirokhan ADP candidates lost in rest of four talukas — Qambar, Warah, Shahdadkot and Nasirabad.

The SNF had fielded Ali Hassan Ghanghro and Mushtaque Bhutto in Ratodero and Sujawal Junejo talukas but none of them won.

Qurban Abbasi, son of Maulana Jan Mohammed Abbasi, made his come back as Larkana taluka nazim as pro-government candidate. He had been the first mayor of the Larkana Municipal Corporation.

In Dokri taluka, Shafqat Unnar of the KPP obtained 82 votes and Ayaz Junejo of the ADP bagged 20.

Bakrani taluka: Dr Mujtaba Samtio, KPP, (95) and Suhail Anwar Siyal, ADP, (16).

Larkana taluka: Qurban Abbasi, KPP-Sarwan Ittehad, (124) and Mumtaz Shaikh, ADP, (102).

Ratodero taluka: Dr Shafqat Soomro, ADP, (60) and Ali Hassan Ghanghro, SNF, (52).

Sujawal Junejo taluka (Qambar-Shahdadkot district): Manzoor Magsi, ADP, (32) and Mushtaque Bhutto, SNF, (18).

Mirokhan taluka: Qamar Gopang, ADP, (35) and Col (rtd) Dost Mohammed Chandio, KPP, (15).

Qambar taluka: Sardar Khan Chandio, KPP, (76) and Ali Hassan Hakiro, ADP, (37).

Shahdadkot taluka: Sardar Jarwar, KPP, (39) and Mithal Mughiri, ADP, 35.

Qubo Saeed Khan taluka: Mir Aijaz Brohi, ADP, (21) and Amir Chandio, KPP, (16).

Warah taluka: Manzoor Chandio, KPP, (48) and Riaz Abro, ADP, (35).

Nasirabad taluka: Khalid Tunio, KPP, (51) and Hayat Shaikh, ADP, (23).
