Behold the glory that is the Ballycotton seafood spicebag from Skinny's Diner

Debuting this Good Friday - disciples say the taste is so good - it's almost sacrilegious

10:49, 02 Apr 2021

Give glory and thanks for the prospect of travelling outside 5km again shortly - for it will put the wonder that is the Ballycotton fish nugget spice bag within reach.

The seaside villages much-loved Skinny's Diner - surely the chipper with the best views in Ireland - debuts their latest culinary creation this evening.

And a top-secret testing programme carried out by creator John McEnally's daughter has returned the verdict of "fantastic" ahead of the Spicebag's addition to the menu.

John says they worked together to come up with the mix of locally sourced fish and chips, Asian spices, peppers and onions.

"It's a family favourite, my daughter loves it and we tried it out with the team here last weekend - everbody said go for it," John told CorkBeo.

"The fish for the goujons is local here from Ballycotton seafood, the potatoes are from JJ Wall's in Whitegate and it's gluten-free."

Local spud legends JJ Wall's are the people who supply Honest Chips to Aldi stores nationwide, so they know their onions (or potatoes).

John says he's putting a Cork spin on the very Dublin tradition of the Spice Bag, a concept that has made some inroads in Leeside takeaways in recent years.

He's hoping it proves a hit with Skinny's Diner regulars and visitors to Ballycotton once travel opens up again - they took the decision to close over the winter as it was very quiet in the village and they didn't want to take chances with the health of staff and customers.

Skinny's re-opened recently and has already been busy - they're expecting queues out the door tonight (socially distanced of course) as they debut their latest creation.

And the diner - which has regularly made Best Of lists for Cork and Ireland - is also welcoming a new neighbour, a gourmet ice-cream shop, Coney Island, has only just opened in the town.
