The entertainment industry is a beast. It's a tough field to break through—not everyone is discovered by an agent at the mall, and not everyone has a famous dad who can land them a role in a big-budget film. Which is why we often hear the terms "struggling actor" or "struggling singer" being thrown around. As a result, one of two things often happen: people get part-time jobs, bussing tables or folding clothes for a living, or if they've been blessed with good looks, model for companies and brands.

Tyrese Gibson,Channing Tatum, andMark Wahlberg did the latter. Before these guys became famous and had legions of (female) fans following their every move and stalking hotels, they paid their bills by starring in ad campaigns and even walking in runway shows. But they're not the only ones who've done it. Of course not; everyone has to start somewhere. You might be surprised to find out what other Famous Dudes Who Used to Be Models.

Tom Welling

Welling modeled for Louisa Modeling Agency, following a suggestion from a catalog camera scout. During that time, he worked for Abercrombie & Fitch, Calvin Klein, and Tommy Hilfiger, even appearing in an ad campaign alongside Ashton Kutcher. Not long after, though, theSmallvilleactor decided to switch careers, admitting that he didn't like modeling.

Chace Crawford

Mr. Chace Crawford may be dating a model now (what's up Rachelle Goulding), but he too was once a model. While other high school students were working part-time jobs, Crawford was modeling for Hollister. Right up his alley.

Tyrese Gibson

Long beforeBaby Boyand "Signs of Love Makin'" Tyrese was a model. Following his cameo in a 1995 Coca-Cola TV commercial, the 17-year-old Tyrese landed gigs for Guess and Tommy Hilfiger. One thing led to another, and soon, he was signed to RCA Music Group and stole everyone's girlfriends, wives, and lady friends.

Chad Michael Murry

Some celebrities have been in the spotlight since they were young, as is the case with Chad Michael Murry. But Murry didn't get into acting right away. In fact, he got his start modeling during his teenage years, and it wasn't just for any department store catalogue. Murray appeared in ad campaigns for Gucci and Tommy Hilfiger.

Mark Wahlberg

Marky Mark's rap career may not have panned out as well as he wanted, but it led to a short modeling career worthy of notice. After retiring his "Good Vibrations" days, he starred in what is possible one of the most famous Calvin Klein ads in 1992 alongside a young (and topless) Kate Moss. A fair trade-off, we think.

Djimon Hounsou

Many of you might remember him as Leonardo DiCaprio's confidant inBlood Diamonds, but the Oscar-nominated Djimon Hounsou was actually a successful model long before he was an actor. In what was an amazing turnaround, he went from being a homeless teenager in Paris to modeling for Thierry Muglar. Mugler was reportedly in search of an unknown to be his new model and happened to have seen photos of Hounsou that had been taken by a Parisian photographer. Hounsouwalked in the fashion house's Spring/Summer 1998 Ready-to-Wear collection. Eventually, his modeling career led to a few cameos in music videos, such as Madonna's "Express Yourself", as well as films.

Josh Duhamel

Pre-Transformersand Fergie, Josh Duhamel was a Midwestern boy just trying to make it in the modeling world. Like Ashton Kutcher, he too joined the IMTA competition, beating out Kutcher for the title of the Male Model of the Year (hesays they laugh about it now). Not much else spawned from his modeling career, though—he was a model for about a year and a half but he made "zero money", as he says. But it's all good because these days he's making millions from films.

Elijah Wood

There are child actors and then there are child models.Lord of the Ringsstar Elijah Wood falls into the latter. Wood's mother got him a few modeling jobs when he was about five or six years old due to the lack of acting gigs at the time. Wood went on to do print work andwalked in a runway show at a mall.

Channing Tatum

Channing Tatum really did all he could to pay the bills, and to (presumably) get his foot into the door. He was a a real live stripper, reminiscent of hisMagic Mikecharacter. In 2000, he was cast as a dancer in Ricky Martin's "She Bangs" music video. Following that, he tried his hand at modeling, working for Armani, Abercrombie & Fitch, Dolce & Gabbana, American Eagle Outfitters, and Emporio Armani. He alsowalked in a Sean John fashion show in New York City in 2003. LOL.

What's impressive about his modeling stint, though, was that he was actually pretty successful at it. Not only did Tatum work for the previously mentioned brands, he also appeared inVogue and signed to several modeling agencies, such as Page 305 in Miami, Beatrice Model agency in Milan, and Ford Models in NYC.

Eddie Redmayne

British actor Eddie Redmayne was scouted by an agent from Storm while in college. He says it was the "most hilariously unsuccessful event ever," referring to two photo shoots for fashion magazines that he did that were "so edgy no one ever read them." Be it as it may, the Les Misérablesstar has appeared in Burberry ad campaigns alongside supermodel Cara Delevingne since.

Ashton Kutcher

When he still went by the name Chris, Ashton Kutcher was actually a full-fledged model. After joining a fresh faces contest, heentered the International Modeling & Talent Association (IMTA) competition in 1997 where he won Most Sought After Male Model. Shortly after, he signed with the Next agency in New York City and began worked for Versace, Tommy Hilfiger, and Calvin Klein's runway shows. He's also appeared in (wait for it) Abercrombie & Fitch campaigns.

Jared Leto

In 2010, a few photos from Jared Leto's modeling days surfaced on the Internet. Apparently, the images were shot when the actor and musician was still in highschool. This isn't much of a surprise, though, considering he's still modeling now, the most recent one being for HUGO BOSS' fragrance campaign. in any case, we'll let you come to your own conclusions regarding Leto's weird throwback modeling photos.

Ian Somerhalder

Before he was slaying vampires, Somerhalder was a model, who worked for Calvin Klein, Versace, Gucci, and Guess.

Robert Pattinson

Twilight stans would be hard pressed to believe that Robert Pattinson did anything else besides play Edward Cullen. But he did. R-Patz modeled from age 12 and would continue for about four years. He was, however, forced to quit at 16 because of his masculinity. "When I first started I was quite tall and looked like a girl, so I got lots of jobs, because it was during that period where the androgynous look was cool," he told British magazineCloser. "Then, I guess, I became too much of a guy, so I never got any more jobs. I had the most unsuccessful modelling career."

Needless to say, he did sort of make a comeback when he modeled swim wear for theSouth China Morning Post, an English-language paper in Hong Kong, back in 2003.

Alex Pettyfer

Much like hisMagic Mikeco-star Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer got his start in the entertainment industry modeling. He appeared in ad campaigns very early on, having been discovered by Ralph Lauren when he was just eight-year-olds. He's appeared in more ads for Ralph Lauren, as well as GAP and Burberry since then.
