Back in2019, comic creatorEric Powell brought his best known creationThe Goon back to his publishing company, Albatross Funnybooks, after publishing the character through Dark Horse for almost two decades. However, it looks like The Goon is going back to its roots so to speak, as it wasannouncedtoday that Powell’s Albatross Funnybooks is moving to Dark Horse as its own imprint.
Other titles in the imprint moving to Dark Horse includeHillbilly andBig Man Plans, as well asBrendon Small’sGalaktikonandSteven Universe creatorRebecca Sugar’sPug Davis.
The press release announcing the move also teased a new original graphic novel to be released under Albatross at Dark Horse will be an original graphic novel created by Powell and famed true crime authorHarold Schechter, who previously collaborated togetherDid You Hear What Eddie Gein Done?, coming sometime in 2023.
Powell is ecstatic about bringing his imprint to Dark Horse:
“I couldn’t be happier to be returning to Dark Horse and bringing Albatross over as an imprint. This partnership will allow me to focus more on what I want to be doing, making books. I’m very excited for what the future holds and the new opportunities to be found.”
Dark Horse President Mike Richardson echoed Powell’s sentiments:
“Eric andThe Goon are old friends of Dark Horse. Bringing The Goon here along with his Albatross imprint feels like a homecoming for all of us. Eric is one of comics’ premier creators, and we can’t wait to show you what he’s been cooking up.”
Albatross Funnybooks is just the latest creator-owned comics imprint to join the Dark Horse family. Last year,Brian Michael Bendis‘Jinxworldmade a similar move from DC to Dark Horse, and Matt Kindt‘sFlux House and Kevin Smith‘sSecret Stash Press have both launched with the publisher this year.
