Katelyn Tuohy, a sophomore from the North Carolina State University cross country team, was named the Honda Sport Award winner for Cross Country as announced today by Chris Voelz, Executive Director of THE Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA).

The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by the CWSA for the past 47 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA- sanctioned sports and signifies “the best of the best in collegiate athletics”.  The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2023 Honda Cup, which will be presented on a live telecast on CBS Sports Network in June.

Tuohy was chosen by a vote of administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. Finalists included Kelsey Chmiel (NC State), Elise Stearns (Northern Arizona) and Parker Valby (Florida).

“It is an honor to win The Honda Sports Award for cross country this year,” Tuohy said. “This award means a lot to me because it not only recognizes my athletic performance but my academic achievement and community involvement. So many amazing women that I look up to have won this award in the past and it is privilege to be able to join them as a recipient of the award.”

Tuohy was the 2022 NCAA Cross Country Individual Champion after capturing both the NCAA Regional individual title and the ACC Championship title in back-to-back seasons. She led her team to its second straight NCAA team title.

The sophomore from Stony Point, N.Y., set a new course record en route to the ACC title and was a two-time Unitied States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA0 National Athlete of the Week and ACC Performer of the Week this season. She now holds two NCAA Individual Championships after winning the 2022 NCAA 5,000m Outdoor title.

An eight-time USTFCCCA All-American across both cross country and track & field, she has also captured eight All-ACC honors. Off the track, she is a six-time USTFCCCAA All-Academic and a seven-time All-ACC Academic team member.

“Katelyn is a tremendous athlete, a great student, and an outstanding teammate. Her work ethic and her ability to raise the level of those around her are unmatched,” said head coach Laurie Henes. “Winning the individual NCAA championship after an undefeated season was such an accomplishment, and I know she was equally thrilled to lead her NC State teammates to the NCAA title as well. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with her every day, and am extremely excited about what the future holds for her.”

The CWSA, entering its 47th year, has honored the nation’s top NCAA women athletes for their superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service.  Since commencing its partnership in 1986, Honda has provided more than $3.4 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women’s athletics programs.
