1963-1966: Member of the Alaska House of Representatives, serving as House speaker from 1965-1966.

1969-1981: U.S. senator from Alaska, serving on finance, interior, and environmental and public works committees..

1971: Staged a five-month, one-man filibuster on the Senate floor aimed at ending the military draft; also that year he publicly read portions of the then-classified Pentagon Papers, which detailed U.S. rationale for fighting in Vietnam, and entered 4,100 pages of the 7,000-page document into the Senate record.

1972: Lost U.S. Supreme Court case regarding his role in "Pentagon Papers" release, although he was never prosecuted.

1992: Founded Philadelphia II, a non-profit organization advocating direct democracy.

2001: Founded The Democracy Foundation, a populist-minded non-profit organization dedicated to civic engagement and education.

2006: Became the first known candidate -- Democrat or Republican -- to enter the 2008 presidential race, riding the subway to announce his candidacy more than 2 1/2 years before Election Day.
While he goes by "Mike," Gravel's first name is Maurice and his middle name is Robert.

Gravel is the author of three books: "Jobs and More Jobs" (1968); "The Senator Gravel Edition, The Pentagon Papers" (1971); and "Citizen Power: A People's Platform" (1972).

Besides being a politician, Gravel has worked as a New York City cab driver, a Wall Street clerk and a brakeman on the Alaska Railroad.

Abortion
Supports abortion rights.
Immigration
Supports creating a legal path to citizenship for some illegal immigrants. Supports guest worker programs. Says the construction of a border fence along the U.S.-Mexican border is a cosmetic solution. Says that NAFTA agreement has worsened the problem, and that better trade policies can help reduce illegal immigration.
Iraq
Opposed use of military force in Iraq, saying invasion was against U.S. interests. Opposed Bush plan to send additional American troops to Iraq. Supports immediate troop withdrawal.
