Religion: Unitarian Education: Columbia University, B.S., 1956 Campaign Web site:www.gravel2008.us 1951-1954: Intelligence adjutant, agent in U.S. Army. 1963-1966: Member of the Alaska House of Representatives, serving as House speaker from 1965-1966. 1969-1981: U.S. senator from Alaska, serving on finance, interior, and environmental and public works committees.. 1971: Staged a five-month, one-man filibuster on the Senate floor aimed at ending the military draft; also that year he publicly read portions of the then-classified Pentagon Papers, which detailed U.S. rationale for fighting in Vietnam, and entered 4,100 pages of the 7,000-page document into the Senate record. 1972: Lost U.S. Supreme Court case regarding his role in "Pentagon Papers" release, although he was never prosecuted. 1992: Founded Philadelphia II, a non-profit organization advocating direct democracy. 2001: Founded The Democracy Foundation, a populist-minded non-profit organization dedicated to civic engagement and education. 2006: Became the first known candidate -- Democrat or Republican -- to enter the 2008 presidential race, riding the subway to announce his candidacy more than 2 1/2 years before Election Day. While he goes by "Mike," Gravel's first name is Maurice and his middle name is Robert. Gravel is the author of three books: "Jobs and More Jobs" (1968); "The Senator Gravel Edition, The Pentagon Papers" (1971); and "Citizen Power: A People's Platform" (1972). Besides being a politician, Gravel has worked as a New York City cab driver, a Wall Street clerk and a brakeman on the Alaska Railroad. |
