What's the best internet deal available now?

Let's be real: You can't cut theinternet from your monthly expenses. Our world is so online, that paying bills, booking medical appointments and doing work typically require a decent internet connection. But theinternet is expensive andmost US adults end up paying 63% more for internet service each year.

While we're limited tothe locally available internet options, you can still sign up for internetand get a gift card or deal on your monthly cost in the process.

Mostinternet service providers run deals all year long. Some of these deals are better than others: Many ISPs useprice traps that'll keep you stuck with a subpar plan for a while. But we've done the research for you and compiled the top deals and perks from some of the most popular ISPs. From gift cards to free tech to discounted rates -- there's a little bit of everything out there.

This August, our favorite internet deal right now is Astound's 1-gig plan. For a limited time, you can getAstound's 1,000Mbps plan for just $35 a month. That deal lasts for a full three years, and some addresses may be eligible for an extra $100 gift card to sweeten the deal. In some places, like Annapolis, you can get the 1-gig plan for $30 a month with an unheard of price-for-life-guarantee. That's one of the best internet deals we've seen in a while -- mostgigabit plans are priced at $70 to start and only go up from there.

If you're looking for other signup bonus offers, ISPs often throw in gift cards, streaming service subscriptions, free months of service or other incentives for new customers.AT&T Fiber andOptimum typically offer gift cards to all online customers, whileVerizon Fios keeps it interesting with a frequent mix of free streaming services or a price lock guarantee of up to five years.

To entice new customers,T-Mobile Home Internet is offering a $300 gift card for those who sign up for All-In Home Internet and Amplified Home Internet. The Amplified Home Internet plan costs $60 a month for speeds up to 415Mbps, and the Amplified Home Internet plan costs $70 for the same speeds, but with the inclusion of a mesh access point for better Wi-Fi. The deal comes after T-Mobile'srecent gateway router upgrade boosted speeds across all T-Mobile Home Internet plans, so if you've been looking for a chance to try out 5G internet, you really can't go wrong with a $300 gift card. Note that the gift cards are only eligible after 60 days of service, and you only get the gift card after 10 weeks of service, so keep that in mind before committing to trying it out.

Astound Broadband

Best internet deal overall

Our take - Astound's internet offers vary by location and are a bit all over the place. In some cases, Astound offers free service, enticing gift cards, bundles or discounted installation for a limited time. Astound's newest deal, however, is the best we've seen in a while.

Pros and Cons
Pros

Cons
  • Availability limited to metro areas
  • Sharp price increase after the promotional period
  • Confusing fees

Astound is offering one of the best internet deals right now for a limited time, so you'd better act fast to take advantage of it. Astound is offering its gigabit plan for just $35 a month for three years. That cost includes the equipment fees and, if you're quick enough, you may be able to tack on free installation as well. Astound's gigabit plan is typically $60 a month, which means you can save $25 on your monthly bill.

Astound is primarily a cable internet provider, but select cities will have access to Astound's fiber plans -- with speeds up to 5,000Mbps.

Pros and Cons
Pros
  • All Verizon Fios plans are 100% fiber, with symmetrical download and upload speeds
  • No data caps or allowances on any plans
  • No term agreements necessary on any plans
Cons
  • Low fiber availability for a national company
  • While Fios and 5G are affordable, LTE and DSL options are pricey

Right now, Verizon has a limited-time offer where you get to lock in your price for up to four years across all plans. That's quite a deal, as many providers hike their rates after just 12 months. Unlimited data and your equipment rental are also included at no extra cost.

Verizon is currently offering either a JBL Clip for those who sign up for the 300Mbps or 500Mbps plans. To entice you toward the 1-gig and 2-gig options, Verizon is offering $400 off Samsung products at Best Buy or a JBL PartyBox speaker.

Verizon is also known for offering streaming bundles and add-ons, like its Disney Plus bundle, which costs $10 a month and includes Disney Plus, Hulu and ESPN Plus (with ads).

Customers with eligible 5G mobile plans can get $25 off each month's Fios internet bill as well.

Spectrum

Best internet and mobile bundle deal

Our take - Spectrum internet is a decent deal on its own with speeds of 500Mbps or 1Gbps starting at $50 and $70 a month, respectively. Bundling makes Spectrum an even better deal with monthly discounts: You can get up to $20 off 500Mbps or $30 off gig service. Bundling also doubles your price guarantee from one to two years and nixes the $10 cost of your Wi-Fi and modem.

Along with the bundle discounts, Spectrum offers a unique contract buyout offer, up to $2,500 to pay off your phone balance. Frontier Fiber 500

Best fiber internet deal

Our take - Frontier Fiber offers a few speed tiers, including a new $30 200Mbps plan, but its Fiber 500 plan is arguably the best one-size-fits-all internet deal.

Cons
  • Spotty DSL speeds

  • Term agreement required to get signup bonuses

Symmetrical download and upload speeds of up to 500Mbps are more than enough for most households and the $30 price is lower than you'll find from many other providers for comparable, or even slower, speeds. For example, that 500Mbps plan has a cost per Mbps of 6 cents. Compare that to a similarly priced plan or one even cheaper from another provider -- such as the Ziply Fiber 100 plan, which has a lower starting price at $20 per month but significantly lower maximum download speeds (100Mbps) and thus a higher cost per Mbps -- and Frontier Fiber's 500Mbps plan stands out as the much better internet deal.

Additionally, Wi-Fi equipment (a sleek Wi-Fi 7 Eero Pro router) and unlimited data are also included at no extra cost.

AT&T Fiber

Best internet deal selection

Our take - With fast, symmetrical speeds, unlimited data, no equipment fees and no contract requirements, AT&T Fiber plans are a great deal on their own. Select areas will have three plans to choose from with maximum speeds of 300Mbps, 500Mbps or 1Gbps, while many will have two additional multi-gig options (2Gbps or 5Gbps).

  • Valuable perks and promotional offers
Cons
  • Much slower DSL plans are more prevalent than fiber options
  • Data caps enforced on all non-fiber plans

The selection of high-speed, fair-priced plans you get with AT&T Fiber is perhaps the best you'll find from any provider.

AT&T offers reward cards for new users: the 1-gig plan comes with a $150 reward card, the 500Mbps plan comes with a $100 reward card, and the 300Mbps plan comes with a $50 reward card. For a limited time, you can get an extra $50 reward card on all plans.

If you're looking to switch providers, AT&T Fiber's contract buyout offer will pay your cancellation fee with another provider in full when you switch. Also, customers can get $20 off their monthly bill if they have an eligible AT&T postpaid wireless plan.

Quantum Fiber Gig Internet

Best internet and TV bundle deals

Our take - It wasn't long ago that bundling internet and TV services with the same provider came with some serious savings. Now, you'd be lucky to get any discount for bundling internet and TV. Unless you live in an area served by Xfinity, that is.

Cox StraightUp Internet

Best prepaid internet deal

Our take - For those who prefer internet service on their terms with no hassles or hidden fees, there's Cox StraightUp Internet. Starting at $50 per month, the service comes with download speeds up to 100Mbps, free equipment, free installation and a three-year price guarantee. Additionally, no contract or credit check is required to sign up.

  • Reasonable data usage terms, no throttling
Cons
  • Plans are pricier than other cable internet providers
  • Steep price increases after first year
  • Cox gateway device doubles as a public hotspot by default
  • Unlimited data bundles are a bad value

For a prepaid plan, Cox StraightUp Internet is a fairly good deal, but the relatively slow speeds keep it from being a great deal. Speeds of 100Mbps for $50 per month equate to a cost per Mbps of 50 cents, which is high compared to most internet plans. On the other hand, the convenience of a prepaid service, free equipment rental and a three-year price guarantee go a long way to make up for the high cost per Mbps.

Cox also offers a $15 monthly discount on all plans if you bundle with a qualifying Cox Mobile plan.

Other internet deals this month

Best internet deals FAQ

What's the best internet deal?

While a slew of perks and promos might be enticing to customers, a low-cost-per-Mbps plan will often be the best internet deal.

For example, Frontier Fiber 500 includes maximum download and upload speeds of 500Mbps starting at $45 monthly for a cost per Mbps of 9 cents. Compare that to a similarly priced plan or one even cheaper from another provider -- such as the Xfinity Connect plan, which has a lower starting price at $20 to $30 per month but significantly lower maximum download (150Mbps) and upload (10Mbps) speeds and thus a higher cost per Mbps -- and Frontier Fiber 500 stands out as the much better internet deal.

If you have similar pricing and speed options from multiple providers, look for special promotions, equipment costs, contract requirements and other service factors to determine which provider has the best deal.

Can I get a deal on internet without a contract?

Yes. Many providers, including AT&T, Frontier, Google Fiber, Spectrum and Verizon Fios offer their best internet deals and incentives without requiring you tosign a contract. Other providers, such as Cox and Xfinity, may require you to sign a contract to get the lowest introductory rate in select areas.

What internet deals are available to students and seniors?

Most major providers have a discount internet program available to qualifying low-income households, including those with students andseniors. Plans are typically in the $20 to $30 range and often come with broadband speeds of 50Mbps or higher.

Can I get a better deal from my current ISP?

Special offers such as introductory pricing and sign-up bonuses are typically reserved for new customers. That said, it may be possible tonegotiate with your provider for a lower price or faster speeds. Your chances of scoring a better deal are higher if you aren't locked in a contract. Also, it's a good idea to research other providers and offers available in your area before you call. The threat ofswitching internet providers is often enough for your current provider to offer you a better deal.
