This is a bit of a PSA, but also some information on why people cut their redwood trees to very tall stumps. Pictured here are the tops of two redwood trees that had previously been “topped”. You can see where new trees grew out of the place where the tops of the trees were previously cut off. It’s hard to tell from the photo, but those new trees are at least 50 feet tall growing out of a stump that is at least 35 feet tall. Those new trees are weak points and likely to break off during storms. This means that the tree has to be “topped” every five years or so to prevent the new trees from blowing off and damaging homes and/or living creatures. If you have redwood trees that have been topped in the past, you’ll want to have an arborist come take a look to see if this is happening. If they are close to structures, you’ll probably need to take action. Don’t wait until they get this big. If you are thinking of topping trees that have not been topped, please talk to an arborist to see what your other options are, otherwise you may be caught in this expensive (and ugly) cycle of topping your trees. If you are thinking of planting redwood trees, please plant far away from structures. If you have volunteers already started close to your house, consider relocating them to a more appropriate spot. Redwood trees are expensive to manage, and it does not feel good to have to cut them when they are so big. Finally, if you are considering buying a house with redwood trees in the yard, please make sure you have the resources to care for them appropriately. If you are considering renting a place with redwood trees in the yard, ask the landlord about their management plan. Redwoods are amazing trees, but just like pets, there is a cost to maintain them. Please redwood responsibly.
