I Didn't Buy My Way Onto the Ballot.
IEarned It.
Under Michigan law, major-party candidates for State Senate may qualify for the ballot by collecting as few as 500 signaturesor by paying a small $100 filing fee. Candidates without party affiliation—commonly calledIndependent candidates—face a far steeper hurdle.
Independent candidates are not allowed to pay their way onto the ballot. My only path was to collectat least 1,500 valid signatures within a 180-day window, in person and directly from registered voters. As a result, it is almost unheard of for Independent candidates to appear on a general election ballot for State Senate in Michigan: the system isstructured to favor the two major parties.
Fact: Every currently serving Michigan State Senator, and virtually every one of their opponents in the last election, opted to pay the $100 fee rather than gathering signatures to qualify for the ballot.*
For six months, I went door-to-door, sat on front porches with veterans and at kitchen tables with strangers, talked with voters at festivals and farmers' markets, on streets and sidewalks, and anywhere people were willing to share their personal stories and their concerns.
My signatures came from people across the political spectrum: conservatives, progressives, moderates, and everything in between. This is what it means to be an Independent: You don't just talk to people who already agree with you. You talk toeveryone.
That’s how this campaign started, and it’s how I intend to serve. As a candidate, I don't ask which party people support before talking with them—I won't do it as your senator, either.
When I say I'll put in the work, you can trust that I mean it.
It's how I got here.
