Carbohydrates Practice Problem Quiz

This is a multiple-choice quiz to practice the Structure and Reactions of Carbohydrates.

It comes with a 40-min video solution!

Each question has a “hint” option with a link(s) to the relevant articles and also thestudy guide of aromatic reactions.

Content

Questions 1 – 30: Structure and classification of carbohydrates.Questions are related to the aldose and ketose notation, pentose, hexose, and heptose, R and S configuration, D and L notation for the stereochemistry of carbohydrates, the relationship between carbohydrates such as constitutional isomers, enantiomers, diastereomers, and epimers. Questions to practice converting between Fischer, Haworth, and Chair forms of sugars.

Example question:

Determine the major product in the following reaction:

Using the structures on page 3 of the Carbohydrates Study Guide, find the structure for the enantiomer of D-Mannose:

Questions 30 – 38: Reactions of carbohydrates: Multiple-choice questions to test the main reactions of sugars such as theIsomerization of Carbohydrates,Ether and Ester Derivatives of Carbohydrates,Oxidation of Monosaccharides,Reduction of Monosaccharides,Kiliani–Fischer Synthesis,Wohl Degradation

Example question:

What product(s) is formed when the following sugar is subjected to a Kiliani–Fischer synthesis?

  2. How can I make carbohydrates chemistry easy

    • The chemistry of carbohydrates is not the simplest because 1) you need to have a solid knowledge of preceding chapters, including stereochemistry, carbonyl-containing groups, etc., and 2) the structures are quite large with many chiral centers. So if you already covered the previous chapters, start with the basics like thestructures and classification, and continue from there.
