Padres' Walker Buehler: Latches on with Padres
RotowireBuehler signed a minor-league contract with San Diego on Monday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Buehler is expected to join the competition in camp for San Diego's final rotation spot, per Acee. He'll be up against the likes of Matt Waldron, Triston McKenzie, German Marquez, JP Sears and Marco Gonzales. Buehler bounced between the Red Sox and Phillies a season ago, posting a 4.93 ERA and 1.52 WHIP with a 92:61 K:BB across 126.0 innings.
... See More... See LessPadres' Jhony Brito: Moved to 60-day IL
RotowireBrito (forearm) was placed on the 60-day injured list Monday.
This is a corresponding move to make room on the 40-man roster for German Marquez, who signed a one-year deal with San Diego earlier in the day. Brito underwent a UCL internal brace procedure and a repair of his flexor tendon in April of 2025, and the team has yet to provide a timetable for his return.
... See More... See LessPadres' Ty France: Back to San Diego as NRI
RotowireThePadres signedFrance to a minor-league contract Monday that includes an invitation to spring training, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.
France was drafted by the Padres and reached the majors with them before being traded to the Mariners. The 31-year-old graded out well defensively at first base in 2025 but turned in a sub-.700 OPS for the second straight regular season between the Twins and Blue Jays. France will join a suddenly-crowded mix at first base and designated hitter in San Diego.
... See More... See LessPadres' German Marquez: Latches on with Padres
RotowireMarquez signed a one-year contract with thePadres on Saturday, Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.com reports.
Marquez struggled mightily during his first full season back from Tommy John surgery, finishing 2025 with an unsightly 6.70 ERA and 1.71 WHIP over 126.1 innings with the Rockies. Leaving the pitcher-unfriendly environment of Colorado should help to improve the 30-year-old's numbers, but he still likely faces an uphill battle to make the Padres' rotation.
... See More... See LessPadres' Nick Castellanos: Lands in San Diego
RotowireCastellanos signed a one-year, $780,000 contract with thePadres on Saturday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Castellanos will receive the league minimum from the Padres while the Phillies pay him the remainder of the $20 million he's owed this season. The 33-year-old has spent time this offseason working out at first base, per Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.com, and he is expected to see time there with the Padres while also bouncing around between the outfield and DH.
... See More... See LessPadres' Griffin Canning: Signs with Friars
RotowireCanning (Achilles) signed a one-year contract with thePadres on Saturday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
Canning was on his way toward having one of the best seasons of his MLB career in 2025, posting a 3.77 ERA and 1.38 WHIP across 76.1 innings before rupturing his left Achilles tendon in late June. It's unclear where the 29-year-old is in his rehab process, but when healthy, he will likely claim a spot in San Diego's rotation.
... See More... See LessPadres' Jason Adam: Thinks he could be ready for opener
RotowireAdam (quadriceps) said Friday that he "absolutely" thinks he could be ready in time for Opening Day, 97.3 The Fan reports.
Coming back from left quadriceps tendon repair surgery, Adam has been throwing bullpen sessions but still needs to show he can field his position and run without issue. The reliever said that the "ultimate priority" is to be healthy for the bulk of the season, but he believes he has a chance to be available for Opening Day. Previous estimates have had Adam in line for his season debut around mid-April, and that's probably still the most likely scenario.
... See More... See LessPadres' Mason Miller: Named closer by manager
RotowirePadres manager Craig Stammen confirmed Wednesday thatMiller will serve as the team's closer in 2026, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
The announcement was merely a formality, as Miller always appeared likely to open the season as the Padres' closer once Stammen confirmed in December that the 27-year-old righty would remain in the bullpen in 2026 and after Robert Suarez bolted for Atlanta in free agency. After being acquired from the Athletics last July in a stunning deadline deal, Miller turned in a 0.77 ERA, 0.73 WHIP and 45 strikeouts to go along with two saves in 23.1 innings to close out the Padres' regular season. Now that he's in line to receive the overwhelming majority of save chances in San Diego to go along with his typically pristine ratios, Miller has a strong argument for being the first closer off the board in fantasy drafts.
... See More... See LessPadres' Jason Adam: Could be back by mid-April
RotowireAdam (quadriceps) could be ready for his season debut "by mid-April or thereabouts," AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Adam is working his way back from left quadriceps tendon repair surgery, which he had last September. ThePadres anticipate the veteran reliever throwing off a mound during spring training, and he could be ready for a rehab assignment around Opening Day. Once healthy, Adam will be a top setup man to closer Mason Miller.
... See More... See LessPadres' Sung-Mun Song: Projected for utility role
RotowireThePadres expectSong to be used in a utility role this season, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Inked to a four-year, $15 million contract in December, Song primarily played third base during his time with the Kiwoom Heroes of the Korea Baseball Organization. However, he also has ample experience at second and first base, and the Padres will try him out in the outfield, as well. Additionally, Song will compete with Miguel Andujar for playing time at designated hitter.
... See More... See LessPadres' Gavin Sheets: Getting shot as No. 1 first baseman
RotowirePadres manager Craig Stammen said in late January thatSheets is the team's top option at first base, Annie Heilbrunn of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Sheets' first year in San Diego was mostly a success, as he put up a .746 OPS with 19 home runs, 71 RBI, 57 runs and two stolen bases over 545 plate appearances. The former White Sox slugger made most of his appearances in left field (64 games) and at DH (63 games), but he came up through the minors as a first baseman and has played 92 games there in the majors. It sounds like Sheets is going to enter spring training with the inside edge to be San Diego's primary first baseman, though Stammen has also mentioned Jake Cronenworth, Will Wagner and Sung-Mun Song as options at the position, per 97.3 The Fan. Sheets showed last season that he can be a productive major-league hitter, and if he's able to hold down the first-base role and gain fantasy eligibility there to go along with his current outfield eligibility, he could be a useful fantasy asset this year.
... See More... See LessPadres' Leandro Cedeno: Returning to MLB
RotowireCedeno signed a minor-league contract with thePadres on Thursday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Cedeno was a one-dimensional prospect with the Cardinals after originally signing with the team as a 16-year-old in 2015, with the primary draw being his power. Despite experiencing some success at the plate in the minors, Cedeno has played in Japan for the last three seasons. Unless he's improved defensively, it's difficult to envision Cedeno carving out a meaningful role in San Diego.
... See More... See LessPadres' Riley Pint: Lands with Padres on MiLB deal
RotowireThePadres signedPint to a minor-league contract Tuesday.
Pint signed a minor-league deal with the Guardians last offseason but never wound up pitching in their organization or anywhere else in 2025, presumably due to an undisclosed injury. The one-time No. 4 overall draft pick has been tattooed for nine runs over 3.2 innings during his brief time in the majors.
... See More... See LessPadres' Miguel Andujar: Lands in San Diego
RotowireAndujar signed a one-year, $4 million contract with thePadres on Wednesday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Andujar finished the 2025 campaign on a high note after being traded from the Athletics to Cincinnati at the deadline, slashing .359/.400/.544 with four homers, 17 RBI and 14 runs scored over 110 regular-season plate appearances with the Reds. Now with the Padres, the 30-year-old outfielder is likely to see most of his playing time come against left-handed starters, as he's posted an impressive .967 OPS versus southpaws since 2023.

RotowireThePadres signedGonzales to a minor-league contract Thursday that includes an invitation to spring training, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Gonzales will receive $1.5 million if in the majors, with an additional $1 million available in incentives. The lefty went unsigned while missing the entire 2025 season following flexor tendon surgery, but he should be fully recovered from that operation and enter spring training without major restrictions. Gonzales -- who turns 34 in February -- hasn't pitched in a game setting since Aug. 2024, so he'll surely need some time in the minors. He holds a career 4.16 ERA over 170 appearances (162 starts) at the major-league level.
