Yankees' Chase Hampton: Could return to action in May
RotowireHampton (elbow) has been throwing on flat ground and could return to pitching in games in May or June, per MLB.com.
Hampton underwent Tommy John surgery last February, so he didn't pitch at all during the 2025 campaign. The right-hander nonetheless remains one of New York's top pitching prospects and was added to the 40-man roster in November, as theYankees opted to shield him from the Rule 5 Draft. Hampton is likely to spend much of the season at the Double-A level once he's ready to throw in games again.
... See More... See LessYankees' Aaron Judge: Will get early at-bats in spring
RotowireYankees manager Aaron Boone said that he expectsJudge to play in "four or five" of the team's first nine Grapefruit League games before he joins Team USA in early March for the World Baseball Classic, Jorge Castillo of ESPN.com reports.
Veterans like Judge are typically eased into spring lineups, but he'll get in some competitive at-bats early in camp to ensure he's sharp ahead of the WBC. Boone also reiterated that Judge will be a full participant in full-squad workouts throughout the week and is facing no limitations with his throwing after a flexor strain in his right elbow resulted in a brief stay on the injured list last July and kept him from playing the outfield for about five weeks. In spite of the elbow concern, Judge continued to thrive at the plate and took home his third American League MVP Award last season while batting a career-best .331 and slugging 53 home runs over 152 regular-season games.
... See More... See LessYankees' Cam Schlittler: Nearing return to mound
RotowireYankees manager Aaron Boone saidSchlittler (back) is expected to resume mound work Tuesday, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
The 25-year-old right-hander reported to camp this week nursing mid-back inflammation, and his scheduled return to mound work Tuesday appears to confirm that the injury is minor. Schlittler should have a fairly normal ramp-up for the regular season and appears set for an Opening Day rotation spot for the first time in his career.
... See More... See LessYankees' Clarke Schmidt: Throwing on flat ground
RotowireSchmidt (elbow) threw on flat ground Friday as he continues his rehab from internal brace surgery, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports.
Schmidt had the operation last July and will not be an option for theYankees until at least the second half. The right-hander has already been placed on the 60-day injured list in order to clear a spot on the 40-man roster.
... See More... See LessYankees' Rafael Montero: Joins Yankees
RotowireMontero signed a minor-league contract with theYankees on Thursday, which includes an invitation to spring training, Hector Gomez of Z101Digital.com reports.
Montero bounced between three teams in 2025 but still covered 60.1 innings in the majors. His primary problem was control, as he walked 37 batters while striking out 58. If Montero earns a roster spot, he'd likely begin the season in a low-leverage role.
... See More... See LessYankees' Clarke Schmidt: Shifts back to 60-day injured list
RotowireSchmidt (elbow) was placed on the 60-day injured list Thursday.
Schmidt underwent an internal brace surgery July 11 and will be out until at least the middle of the 2026 season. This move doesn't come as a surprise and is procedural to create a roster spot for the signing of Paul Goldschmidt.
... See More... See LessYankees' Carlos Rodon: Has thrown 5-to-6 bullpen sessions
RotowireRodon (elbow) has thrown 5-to-6 bullpen sessions and is scheduled to throw another one Saturday, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports.
Rodon also revealed that he was given two platelet-rich plasma injections in his surgically repaired left elbow in order to expediate the healing process. The expectation is that Rodon will make a few Grapefruit League starts and be ready for his season debut in late April or early May.
... See More... See LessYankees' Cam Schlittler: Nursing minor back injury
RotowireYankees manager Aaron Boone said Thursday that Schlitter will not throw off a mound for a few days due to mid-back inflammation, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
The injury is considered minor, and Schlitter will continue to throw on flat ground. At this point, the Yankees seem to be simply exercising caution, though it's possibleSchlittler's Grapefruit League debut gets pushed back. The young right-hander is locked into a spot in the Yankees' rotation after holding a 2.96 ERA and 84:31 K:BB over 73 regular-season innings in 2025.
... See More... See LessYankees' Brent Headrick: Healthy for spring training
RotowireYankees manager Aaron Boone indicated Wednesday thatHeadrick (forearm) is fully healthy for the start of spring training, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports.
Headrick closed 2025 on the Yankees' injured list while recovering from a left forearm contusion, but he was able to make seven rehab appearances at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in September and appears to have had a normal offseason. The 28-year-old southpaw will be competing for a spot in the Opening Day bullpen and will likely work in middle relief if he breaks camp with the big club.
... See More... See LessYankees' Oswaldo Cabrera: No restrictions for camp
RotowireYankees manager Aaron Boone indicated Wednesday thatCabrera (ankle) was fully healthy for the start of spring training, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports.
Anthony Volpe (shoulder) was the only position player that Boone said would begin camp behind the others while recovering from an injury, so Cabrera will seemingly be operating without any restrictions this spring after fracturing his left ankle May 12 and undergoing season-ending surgery. Cabrera started 30 of the Yankees' first 41 games last year at third base, but with Ryan McMahon currently sitting atop the depth chart at the hot corner, Cabrera will likely be ticketed for a utility role.
... See More... See LessYankees' Ben Rice: Will still get regular reps vs. LHP
RotowireYankees manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday thatRice will play regularly against lefties in addition to righties this season, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
The Yankees re-signed Paul Goldschmidt last week, giving Rice a potential roadblock to everyday playing time at first base. However, while Goldschmidt will be given starts against lefty hurlers as a short-side platoon option, Rice is still expected to see plenty of action versus southpaws. Boone also noted that Rice could see a little playing time at catcher on days Goldschmidt starts at first base.
... See More... See LessYankees' Giancarlo Stanton: No restrictions in spring training
RotowireYankees manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday thatStanton (elbows) has had a great offseason and will not have any restrictions at the start of spring training, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports.
Stanton's 2025 season debut was delayed until mid-June by tennis elbow in both arms. Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reported last week that the injuries haven't healed and Stanton will need to be monitored closely again in 2026. However, at least at the beginning of camp, Stanton appears to be good to go. The 36-year-old was superb when on the field last season, slashing .273/.350/.594 with 24 home runs across 77 regular-season contests.
... See More... See LessYankees' Gerrit Cole: Could pitch in spring games
RotowireYankees manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday thatCole (elbow) could pitch in some Grapefruit League games before the end of camp, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports.
Cole missed the entirety of the 2025 season following Tommy John with internal bracing surgery last March. He's been throwing since August and will progress to live batting practice session in a couple weeks, with game action a possibility later in March. However, while Cole's rehab has gone as well as could be expected, the Yankees don't expect him to rejoin their rotation until late May or early June.
... See More... See LessYankees' Dom Hamel: Sent outright to Triple-A
RotowireHamel was sent outright to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday.
Hamel lost his spot on 40-man roster Wednesday but failed to draw any interest on the waiver wire. He struggled at Triple-A Syracuse a season ago, accruing a 5.32 ERA across 67.2 innings.
... See More... See LessYankees' Braden Shewmake: Sent outright to Triple-A
RotowireShewmake was outrighted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday.
Shewmake was booted from the 40-man roster Thursday after theYankees claimed Osvaldo Bido off waivers. Shewmake appears destined to begin the 2026 campaign at Triple-A, where he hit .243 with four home runs, 29 RBI and 15 stolen bases in 85 games a year ago.
... See More... See LessYankees' Max Schuemann: Traded to Yankees
RotowireTheYankees acquiredSchuemann from the Athletics in exchange for minor-league RHP Luis Burgos on Monday.
Schuemann was designated for assignment by the Athletics last week and will now head to New York to compete for a reserve infielder job this spring. Schuemann has slashed .212/.306/.297 with nine home runs, 47 RBI, 75 runs scored, 21 stolen bases and a 69:154 BB:K across 672 big-league plate appearances since making his MLB debut in 2024.
... See More... See LessYankees' Giancarlo Stanton: Tennis elbow will be monitored
RotowireStanton's tennis elbow in both arms has not healed and will be managed again during the upcoming season, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
Stanton didn't make his season debut until mid-June last year because of the elbow issues, but he was very good when on the field, slashing .273/.350/.594 with 24 home runs across 77 regular-season contests. He does not seem to be in any danger of a late start to the season again, but theYankees will keep close tabs on Stanton in camp and during the regular season. The 36-year-old will be the Yanks' primary designated hitter again in 2026.
... See More... See LessYankees' Yanquiel Fernandez: Designated for assignment
RotowireTheYankees designatedFernandez for assignment Monday, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports.
Fernandez was claimed off waivers from the Rockies earlier this month after he was DFA'd by Colorado in January. The 23-year-old outfielder slashed just .225/.265/.348 with a lofty strikeout rate across his first 147 big-league plate appearances last season.
... See More... See LessYankees' Anthony Volpe: Likely out until at least May
RotowireVolpe (shoulder) will begin the 2026 season on the injured list and is unlikely to be ready to play "at least until May," Randy Miller of NJ.com reports.
Volpe underwent left labrum surgery last October and is still in the recovery phase. This isn't a new timeline for him -- Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reported in early December that Volpe isn't likely to play in April -- but rather serves as a reminder for fantasy managers that the young shortstop is going to miss a substantial chunk of time early in the campaign. Jose Caballero seems to be the leading candidate to get the most starts at shortstop until Volpe is back in action.
... See More... See LessYankees' Ben Rice: Gets company at 1B in Goldschmidt
RotowireRice is slated to be theYankees' primary first baseman in 2026, but Paul Goldschmidt -- who the team re-signed Friday -- is expected to frequently start at the position against lefty pitchers, Randy Miller of NJ.com reports.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said back in December that he expects Rice to play "a lot" against lefties this season, but New York's decision to bring back Goldschmidt -- who posted a standout .981 OPS against southpaws last year -- complicates matters. It doesn't necessarily mean that Rice will always sit against all left-handed starters; for those games, he could frequently move behind the plate to give fellow lefty hitter Austin Wells a break, and Rice may also be given turns at DH. With that in mind, fantasy managers need not downgrade Rice's outlook significantly, as Boone figures to get Rice's bat into the lineup on a near-everyday basis as long as he's hitting well. For those who roster Rice in dynasty and keeper leagues, the signing of Goldschmidt may end up being a good thing if it means Rice is able to maintain catcher eligibility beyond 2026.
