Astros' Cavan Biggio: Recovering from elbow scope
RotowireBiggio said Monday that he's about 2-to-3 weeks away from being ready to play in Grapefruit League games while he works his way back from offseason arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
Biggio will be attending big-league camp after signing a minor-league deal with theAstros on Sunday, but he'll be behind Houston's other position players early in spring training while he completes his post-surgery ramp-up program. Assuming he's able to play in games by early March, Biggio should keep himself in the mix for a utility spot on the Astros' Opening Day roster.
... See More... See LessAstros' Isaac Paredes: Seeing time at second base
RotowireParedes was spotted playing second base during infield drills Monday and is expected to get reps at different positions throughout spring training, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
Paredes missed two months last season with a hamstring tear, leading to theAstros' re-acquisition of Carlos Correa. With Correa expected to man third base in 2026, Paredes enters spring training as the odd man out in a crowded Houston infield. While a trade remains possible and would probably be the best outcome for Paredes from a fantasy perspective, the Astros appear to be testing him out as a utility option. Second base could ultimately be Paredes' best path towards playing time, as manager Joe Espada has indicated he wants to give Jose Altuve some more rest this season. Paredes appeared in 102 games last year, posting an .810 OPS with 20 home runs and 53 RBI.

RotowireAstros manager Joe Espada said Monday thatAltuve will spend most of spring training working exclusively at second base, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
Altuve was the Astros' Opening Day left fielder last season and wound up splitting his time pretty evenly between left field, second base and designated hitter. This season, however, he appears slated to return to his natural second base position on an everyday basis. Zach Cole looks like the favorite to see most of the reps in left field for Houston.
... See More... See LessAstros' Jose Altuve: Healthy to start spring
RotowireAltuve (foot) is healthy to start spring training and is expected to serve as theAstros' primary second baseman this season, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
Altuve dealt with a rocky transition to left field to start the 2025 campaign and finished the year with a nagging foot injury, resulting in a .265 batting average, the lowest of his career apart from the 2020 shortened season. Now healthy and back at second base, Altuve will look to rebound in 2026. Manager Joe Espada emphasized the 35-year-old Altuve's health earlier in the offseason, stating that he needs to "help Jose have the right amount of time to be off his feet." With Houston's current surplus of infielders, it seems likely that Altuve will at least play fewer than the 155 games he did in 2025.
... See More... See LessAstros' Yordan Alvarez: Clear of ankle pain
RotowireAlvarez (ankle) reported to spring training Sunday and announced that his is pain-free, Houston Chronicle reports.
The 28-year-old dealt with a left ankle sprain late last year and dealt with some inflammation early in the offseason, but it appears he's entering spring training at 100 percent. Alvarez was limited to 48 games due to the ankle issue and a hand fracture, with his .273/.367/.430 slash line representing career lows in average and slugging percentage. The injury-plagued season ended a run of four straight 30-homer campaigns for the slugger, who is a popular rebound candidate in 2026. Alvarez is expected to see most of his action at designated hitter this season after making just 15 appearances in left field in 2025.
... See More... See LessAstros' Cavan Biggio: Lands MiLB deal with Houston
RotowireBiggio signed Sunday with theAstros on a minor-league contract that includes an invitation to big-league spring training.
The Astros are Biggio's seventh different organization, but the 30-year-old has plenty of familiarity with Houston, where his Hall of Fame father played all 20 of his big-league seasons. Biggio will compete for a utility role on the Opening Day squad, but he'll need a strong showing in the Cactus League plus some injuries to other players to secure a spot. With a 100 wRC+ over parts of seven seasons, he's been a league-average hitter over his career, but he mustered a lowly .174/.296/.246 across 83 plate appearances in the majors with Kansas City in 2025.
... See More... See LessAstros' Nate Pearson: Had offseason cleanup on elbow
RotowirePearson underwent a cleanup procedure on his right elbow during the offseason but will throw a bullpen session Friday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
The right-hander joined theAstros on a one-year, $1.35 million contract during the offseason, and it appears he's opening camp in good shape despite the procedure. Pearson surrendered 15 earned runs over 11 relief outings for the Cubs last season but was dominant at the Triple-A level with a 2.22 ERA across 44.2 innings. He's primarily worked as a reliever since 2021, but Houston is expected to give him a chance to stretch out as a starter during spring training.
... See More... See LessAstros' Joey Loperfido: Heading back to Houston
RotowireTheAstros acquiredLoperfido from the Blue Jays on Friday in exchange for Jesus Sanchez.
It's a return to his original organization for Loperfido, who broke into the big leagues with the Astros before being dealt to Toronto as part of the Yusei Kikuchi trade in July 2024. Loperfido hasn't gained a foothold yet in the majors, but he did hit well over 104 plate appearances last season, slashing .333/.379/.500 with four home runs. The 26-year-old will be in the mix for reps as part of a largely unproven outfield in Houston, but he also has a minor-league option remaining and will be behind Cam Smith and Zach Cole in the battle for a corner OF spot.
... See More... See LessAstros' Zach Cole: Competing for starting spot
RotowireCole will compete to be theAstros' starting left fielder in spring training, per Brian McTaggart of MLB.com.
Cole made a good impression in a 15-game stint with Houston late last season, posting an .880 OPS with four home runs and three stolen bases. With Jake Meyers slated to man center field and Jesus Sanchez in right, the Astros' final outfield spot should come down to either Cole or Cam Smith, with the loser likely to open the year in Triple-A.
... See More... See LessAstros' Hunter Brown: Named Opening Day starter
RotowireAstros manager Joe Espada announced Wednesday thatBrown will be the team's Opening Day starter, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
Most teams don't reveal their Opening Day starters this early in spring training, but Brown was the obvious choice after finishing third in American League Cy Young voting in 2025. The 27-year-old right-hander will go up against the Angels at home on Opening Day.
... See More... See LessAstros' Enyel De Los Santos: Shut down with knee strain
RotowireAstros manager Joe Espada said Wednesday thatDe Los Santos has been shut down due to a right knee strain, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
It's unclear when De Los Santos might be cleared to throw again. The right-hander posted a 4.36 ERA and 62:24 K:BB over 66 innings between Atlanta and Houston in 2025. If healthy, De Los Santos is pegged for a middle relief role in the Astros' bullpen.
... See More... See LessAstros' Yainer Diaz: Coming back from foot sprain
RotowireDiaz is behind schedule with his running program after suffering a left foot sprain during the Dominican Winter League, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
Diaz is participating in other baseball activities and will catch Tatsuya Imai's bullpen session Wednesday, but he's a tad behind with his running. It does not sound like an injury that will sideline Diaz long, but theAstros could hold him out of the first handful of Grapefruit League games just to be safe.
... See More... See LessAstros' Josh Hader: Diagnosed with bicep inflammation
RotowireHader will resume a throwing program Wednesday after being shut down since early February with left bicep inflammation, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
It seems the left shoulder strain that sidelined Hader for the final seven-plus weeks of last season is behind him, but now he has a new injury to contend with. The veteran reliever will resume throwing Wednesday and ramp up slowly, and his status for Opening Day is up in the air. If Hader needs some time on the injured list, Bryan Abreu would step in as theAstros' closer.
... See More... See LessAstros' Josh Hader: Throwing lightly on flat ground
RotowireHader (shoulder) has been throwing lightly on flat ground and theAstros expect to have a better idea as to his status by the middle of this week, Buster Olney of ESPN reports.
Earlier in the offseason, Hader -- who missed the final seven-plus weeks of last season with a left shoulder strain -- told Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle that he felt "back to normal" and had been throwing off a mound. This latest update suggests there's less certainty about the closer's health, however. If it turns out that Hader had a setback or simply isn't ready, Bryan Abreu would be next in line for saves in the Houston bullpen.
... See More... See LessAstros' J.P. France: Outrighted to Triple-A
RotowireFrance cleared waivers Thursday and was sent outright to Triple-A Sugar Land, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.
France will still receive an invitation to spring training, but he will have to pitch his way back onto theAstros' 40-man roster after missing the vast majority of 2025 recovering from shoulder surgery.

CBS Sports Mike AxisaAstros' Yainer Diaz: Wins arbitration case
RotowireDiaz will make $4.5 million in 2026 after winning his arbitration hearing with theAstros on Tuesday, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports.
Diaz slashed .256/.284/.417 in 2025 while tallying 20 homers, 70 RBI and 56 runs scored across 567 plate appearances. His success ultimately led to the arbitration panel choosing his $4.5 million figure over the $3 million that the Astros submitted. The 27-year-old backstop is expected to continue playing nearly every day in 2026 and has two years of arbitration eligibility remaining.
... See More... See LessAstros' Cam Smith: Will play some CF this spring
RotowireAstros manager Joe Espada said Tuesday thatSmith will play some center field during spring training, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Smith learned right field on the fly last season and took surprisingly well to it, so the Astros will push him further to see if he can learn a more demanding position. Right field still represents Smith's best path to a starting job, but more opportunities could be afforded if he shows he can adequately handle center field. Smith slashed .236/.312/.358 with nine home runs and a 27.8 percent strikeout rate across 134 games during his rookie season.
... See More... See LessAstros' Isaac Paredes: Avoids arbitration with Astros
RotowireTheAstros andParedes avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $9.35 million contract Tuesday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. The deal includes a club option for 2027.
The deal is the midpoint of the figures that were exchanged last month. Paredes will have one more year of arbitration eligibility next offseason before reaching free agency the following winter. There's currently not a clear opening in Houston's everyday lineup for Paredes, who hit .254/.352/.458 with 20 home runs in 2025, but he remains a candidate to be traded.
