Guardians' George Valera: In mix for Opening Day roster
RotowireValera enters spring training under no restrictions and will compete for a spot on the 26-man roster, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.
Valera's previous three springs were marred by injuries, with two of them impacted by offseason rehab. He's had a normal offseason this year, andGuardians manager Stephen Vogt hopes to see the outfielder in a spring training game for the first time since he was named Cleveland's skipper prior to the 2024 season. Valera made his MLB debut in 2025, posting a .220/.333/.415 slash line with two home runs, five RBI and a 13:7 K:BB ratio over 16 contests down the stretch and into the postseason. He regularly started against right-handers and was often used as the No. 2 hitter. "He can manage an at-bat," Vogt said. "He makes great swing decisions. He's got power. He's just a good, good hitter." The 25-year-old will compete with current prospects Chase DeLauter and CJ Kayfus for a spot in the outfield/DH mix.
... See More... See LessGuardians' David Fry: Resumes catching
RotowireFry will spend the first part of spring training mainly as a catcher, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.
Fry, who was limited to DH and pinch-hitting duties in 2025 following his recovery from Tommy John elbow surgery, will ultimately move around the field for the final weeks of camp. In addition to catching, Fry can play both corner spots in the infield and outfield, giving manager Stephen Vogt flexibility when creating a lineup on any given day. Fry was an All Star in 2024, when he slashed .263/.356/.448 with 14 home runs and 51 RBI in 392 plate appearances over 122 games.
... See More... See LessGuardians' Ben Lively: Back with Guardians on minors deal
RotowireTheGuardians re-signedLively (elbow) to a two-year minor-league contract Thursday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
Lively will be in camp with Cleveland as he continues his rehab from a UCL reconstruction and flexor tendon repair that he had last May. He's currently throwing out to 75 feet, per Tim Stebbins of MLB.com. The right-hander has a chance to make some appearances late in the 2026 season, but this is more of a depth addition for 2027 by the Guardians. Lively has posted a 3.68 ERA and 147:64 K:BB over 195.2 innings covering 38 starts during his two seasons in Cleveland.
... See More... See LessGuardians' Chase DeLauter: Reps in center, right field
RotowireDeLauter will play center field and right field during training camp, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.
DeLauter has a chance to be an everyday outfielder and middle-of-the-order bat for theGuardians in 2026, but he'll need to stay healthy. Since being drafted in the first round in 2022, DeLauter has played just 138 regular-season games in the minors due to a variety of injuries. He played just 42 games last season due to core muscle surgery in March and right wrist surgery in July. When healthy, DeLauter has made an impact offensively, posting a .888 OPS during his career in the minors.
... See More... See LessGuardians' Luis L. Ortiz: Not allowed in camp
RotowireOrtiz (personal) will remain on leave and is not permitted to report to spring training, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.
Ortiz and teammate Emmanuel Clase were placed on non-disciplinary paid leave amid allegations of sports gambling last July. The two pitchers were subsequently indicted on charges in November related to an alleged scheme to rig bets on pitches thrown in MLB games. There remains no timeline for a resolution in each case.

RotowireClase (personal) will remain on leave and is not permitted to report to spring training, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.
Both Clase and Luis L. Ortiz were placed on non-disciplinary paid leave last July amid allegations of sports gambling. The duo were then indicted in November related to an alleged scheme to rig bets on pitches thrown in MLB games. There remains no timeline for a resolution in each case.
... See More... See LessGuardians' Angel Genao: Rebounds in winter ball
RotowireGenao showed more full extension on his swings while with Aquilas in the Dominican Winter League, Keith Law of The Athletic reports.
Genao suffered a right shoulder injury during spring training last year, and the effects of the injury lingered throughout the regular season. After a boffo 2024, the 21-year-old shortstop dropped to a .259/.323/.359 slash line over 77 games at Double-A Akron. In winter ball, Genao improved to .325/.387/.386 over 26 games for Aquilas, suggesting he regained strength and confidence in the shoulder. He might eventually move to second base in the majors, but his improved defense at Akron in 2025 suggest shortstop is still a possibility. Genao's a bounce-back candidate for 2026 and expected to reach Triple-A Columbus.
... See More... See LessGuardians' Joey Cantillo: Competing for rotation
RotowireCantillo will compete for a spot in the rotation this spring, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.
Cantillo spent the second half of the 2025 season in theGuardians' rotation but apparently will have to win a spot this spring. The left-hander had a 2.96 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 72:28 K:BB over 13 starts (67.0 innings). He and prospect Parker Messick are the frontrunners for a spot on the back end of the rotation. If Cantillo loses out, he could break camp with a bullpen role. In 21 appearances as a reliever in 2025, the 26-year-old posted a 3.81 ERA and 1.38 WHIP while limiting batters to a .229 batting average.
... See More... See LessGuardians' Kolby Allard: Back with Guardians as NRI
RotowireTheGuardians re-signedAllard to a minor-league contract Monday that includes an invitation to spring training.
Allard elected free agency after being outrighted off the Guardians' 40-man roster back in November, but he's ultimately found his way back into the organization. The left-hander was effective as a multi-inning reliever in 2025, posting a 2.63 ERA and 1.20 WHIP to go along with a 42:14 K:BB across 65 regular-season frames. Allard will have to win a roster spot but could fill a long relief role again.
... See More... See LessGuardians' Travis Bazzana: Invited to spring training
RotowireTheGuardians have extendedBazzana an invitation to big-league camp in spring training.
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft, Bazzana somewhat surprisingly was not invited to spring training last year, but he will be with the big club in camp this time around. Bazzana has had an underwhelming start to his pro career, having slashed .245/.389/.424 with nine homers and 12 steals in 2025 while being limited to 84 games due to oblique issues. He finished last season at Triple-A Columbus and is likely to head back there to begin the 2026 season, but Bazzana is could debut with Cleveland at some point during the summer.

CBS Sports Dayn PerryGuardians' Jose Ramirez: Signs seven-year extension
RotowireRamirez signed a seven-year, $175 million contract extension with theGuardians on Saturday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.
Ramirez still had three years left on the seven-year deal he signed with Cleveland prior to the 2022 season, but his new contract will ensure he remains with the Guardians through 2032. The 33-year-old third baseman has proven to be well worth the investment, as he's reached 150 games played in each of the past five seasons while averaging 31.6 homers, 102.4 RBI, 101 runs and 32 steals per year in that span.
