Red Sox's Isiah Kiner-Falefa: Gettings reps at first
RotowireKiner-Falefa is getting work at first base early in spring training due to the absences of Triston Casas (knee) and Romy Gonzalez (shoulder), Sean McAdam of Masslive.com reports.
Casas continues to recover from major knee surgery last May, and Gonzalez has been shelved since September due to a left shoulder injury. Kiner-Falefa has typically served at second base, third and shortstop during his major-league career, but the veteran utility man could get some looks at first during spring training and early in the regular season behind Willson Contreras.
... See More... See LessRed Sox's Tanner Houck: Begins throwing program
RotowireHouck (elbow) began a throwing program Monday with 25 throws from 45 feet, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
It's the first time he's thrown a baseball since he underwent a UCL reconstruction and flexor tendon repair six months ago. Houck will continue a deliberate rehab process over the next several months and hopes to make a late-season return, but it's likely theRed Sox will hold him back until 2027.
... See More... See LessRed Sox's Connor Wong: Set for backup catcher role in 2026
RotowireWong (hand) took part in live batting practice Monday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Wong reported to camp last week and appears to be fully healthy after he underwent a carpal boss excision procedure on his right hand back on Oct. 9. The hand issue perhaps played a factor in Wong's dramatic drop in production in 2025, when his OPS fell to .500 over his 188 plate appearances after he had posted a .758 OPS the season prior. Carlos Narvaez ended up overtaking Wong on the depth chart, and manager Alex Cora relayed Saturday that Narvaez "earned the right" to be the team's starter heading into 2026, per Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald. Cora added that Wong's solid defense behind the plate should allow him to play more frequently than the typical backup catcher, and the 29-year-old could also be an option to make starts first base when Willson Contreras needs a day off.
... See More... See LessRed Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Yet to begin baseball activities
RotowireRed Sox manager Alex Cora said Monday thatGonzalez (shoulder) has yet to begin baseball activities, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
Gonzalez injured his left shoulder late last regular season and was given a platelet-rich plasma injection in January after experiencing renewed discomfort. The Red Sox are hopeful that he will be ready in time for Opening Day, but there seems to be some uncertainty about Gonzalez's status. Once he's ready, the right-handed-hitting Gonzalez is slated to see regular playing time against left-handed pitching.
... See More... See LessRed Sox's Caleb Durbin: Looks healthy for camp
RotowireDurbin (elbow) was spotted taking part in infield drills during Monday's full-squad workout, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
Durbin underwent an arthroscopic procedure on his right elbow in late October, but he doesn't look like he'll be operating with any restrictions in his first spring training with theRed Sox, who acquired him last week in a six-player deal with the Brewers. During his rookie campaign with Milwaukee, Durbin served as the team's primary third baseman and was a threat on the basepaths (18 steals in 24 attempts) and made contact at an elite clip (9.9 percent strikeout rate), but his 26.9 percent hard-hit rate ranked in the fourth percentile of all batted and limited his slugging production. With that in mind, Durbin's bat may profile better at second base rather than third base, but the Red Sox will likely give him a look at both positions throughout the spring.
... See More... See LessRed Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Enters camp in limbo
RotowireYoshida's role for the 2026 roster is uncertain entering training camp, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Yoshida enters the fourth year of a five-year contract having underwhelmed since his arrival in Boston. Injuries have played a part, but the 32-year-old has also been passed on the depth chart by younger options. A shoulder injury to open 2025 limited him to 55 regular-season games in which he recorded an unremarkable slash line of .266/.307/.388, but an .837 OPS during the month of September suggests the shoulder was still an issue most of the year. Designated hitter appears to be his best fit, but theRed Sox also need to figure out a spot for Triston Casas (knee) when he's cleared to play, and the team already has four other outfielders pushing for regular at-bats.
... See More... See LessRed Sox's Triston Casas: Doing individual drills
RotowireCasas (knee) will be doing individual drills when theRed Sox have their first full-squad workout Sunday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
He'll be taking part in drills similar to the rest of the team. For the first time in three seasons, Casas does not enter camp as the primary starter at first base, as offseason trade acquisition Willson Contreras will handle the position. That leaves designated hitter as a potential landing spot for Casas once he's healthy, and he could provide a boost to a lineup that, on paper, lacks power. Any of Boston's four main outfielders could also slot in at DH, however, and Masataka Yoshida will be in the mix as well. Casas, who is recovering from May 2025 knee surgery, isn't expected to be ready for game action by Opening Day.
... See More... See LessRed Sox's Payton Tolle: Looking to protect fastball
RotowireTolle plans to mix in more secondary offerings to complement his fastball during the upcoming season, Christoper Smith of MassLive.com reports.
Over his 16.1 regular-season innings in the big leagues last season, Tolle's fastball averaged 96.7 miles per hour with a perceived speed of 98.7 mph due to extension and ride. The heater can be a weapon for the young left-hander, but opponents were able to hit the pitch in 2025, going 13-for-46 (.283 average) against it with a .565 slugging percentage. That's likely due to Tolle's heavy reliance on the offering, which he threw 64.1 percent of the time. Tolle feels his changeup -- which he threw just 6.9 percent of the time -- can be featured more often in 2026. Though Tolle will be given the chance to compete for the fifth spot in Boston's Opening Day rotation this spring, the fact that the 23-year-old has minor-league options remaining could work against him. Along with Tolle, Kutter Crawford, Connelly Early, Johan Oviedo and Patrick Sandoval are vying for back-end rotation spots.
... See More... See LessRed Sox's Carlos Narvaez: Expected to remain starting catcher
RotowireNarvaez (knee) will serve as Boston's starting catcher again in 2026, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
According to manager Alex Cora, Narvaez's knee was a problem throughout the entire 2025 season. Narvaez was able to avoid the injured list and remained an excellent defensive backstop, but the injury helps explain his offensive downturn in the second half, when he posted a .187/.233/.387 slash line. Following a left knee meniscectomy in October, Narvaez will slot back in as the No. 1 catcher for theRed Sox ahead of Connor Wong.
... See More... See LessRed Sox's Patrick Sandoval: Throwing live batting practice
RotowireSandoval (elbow) threw a live batting practice session Friday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
Sandoval was unable to make it back in the second half of last season as hoped following June 2024 internal brace surgery on his left elbow. However, it appears he is without restrictions at the beginning of camp. The left-hander is competing for a spot in Boston's rotation this spring but will have some work to do to secure a slot after the team brought in Sonny Gray, Ranger Suarez and Johan Oviedo over the winter. Sandoval holds a career 4.01 ERA, 22.7 percent strikeout rate and 10.1 percent walk rate over six major-league seasons.
... See More... See LessRed Sox's Brayan Bello: Adding curveball to mix
RotowireBello is re-introducing a curveball to his arsenal this spring, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
With assistance from new teammate Ranger Suarez, Bello is expanding a repertoire that already includes a four-seamer, sinker, cutter, sweeper/slider and changeup. Bello, who came to the majors as a 23-year-old in 2022, threw a curve earlier in his career but couldn't find the right shape or proper arm slot for it.Red Sox pitching coach Andrew Bailey believes that Bello, through his experience at the MLB level, has developed to a point where he understands the benefits of horizontal and vertical breaks against hitters from either side of the plate. Adding back the curveball gives him another weapon to serve that goal. Bello is projected to slot fourth in Boston's rotation.
... See More... See LessRed Sox's Roman Anthony: Likely leadoff hitter versus RHP
RotowireRed Sox manager Alex Cora "seems to be leaning toward" battingAnthony leadoff against right-handers, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Jarren Duran was Boston's primary leadoff man for most of 2025, but Anthony took over the spot in August and posted a 1.003 OPS in 27 games before an oblique strain ended his season. Anthony is fully healthy now, and while he should remain in the lineup most days against southpaws as well, he'll hit lower in the order when he doesn't have the platoon advantage. Duran is likely to open the season batting third versus righties.
... See More... See LessRed Sox's Tanner Houck: Begins throwing next week
RotowireHouck (elbow) will begin a throwing program next week, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
Houck underwent a hybrid reconstruction of his UCL plus a flexor tendon repair in his right elbow last August. The right-hander hopes to contribute to theRed Sox in September, but the club won't really be counting on him again until 2027.
... See More... See LessRed Sox's Garrett Crochet: Tapped for Opening Day
RotowireManager Alex Cora announced Tuesday thatCrochet will start Opening Day against the Reds on March 26, Sean McAdam of MassLive.com reports.
It's hardly a surprise the left-hander will be taking the mound first for Boston, and Cora wasted no time making it official. Crochet entrenched himself as one of the best pitchers in baseball last year, posting a 2.59 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 255:46 K:BB across 205.1 innings during the regular season.
... See More... See LessRed Sox's Tanner Houck: Moves to 60-day IL
RotowireTheRed Sox placedHouck (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
The right-hander underwent a hybrid reconstruction of the UCL in his right elbow, plus a flexor tendon repair, in August, so his move to the 60-day IL was always a matter of time. Houck is targeting late 2026 to rejoin the Red Sox, but it wouldn't be surprising if he's unable to rejoin the major-league roster until 2027.
... See More... See LessRed Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Position to be determined
RotowireMayer's starting position has yet to be determined, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. He played both second base and third base during his rookie season in 2025.
Mayer had been ticketed for a starting role at third base, replacing the departed Alex Bregman, but Monday's acquisition of Caleb Durbin from Milwaukee creates uncertainty. Both Mayer and Durbin have experience at the hot corner and second base in the majors, and manager Alex Cora was hesitant to make any decisions Monday. An early indicator of the infielders' eventual landing spot should come Feb. 15, when Boston's position players report to Fort Myers and where the two are stationed during spring training drills.
... See More... See LessRed Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Dealing with shoulder issue
RotowireGonzalez dealt with left shoulder inflammation much of the offseason and is expected to be limited at the start of spring training, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Gonzalez initially injured his left shoulder in the final series of the regular season against the Tigers back in September before going 1-for-9 at the plate in the wild-card series loss to the Yankees. Gonzalez didn't require any sort of offseason surgery but did receive a PRP injection after experiencing discomfort after swinging the bat in January. Gonzalez is aiming to be ready for Opening Day and is once again expected to fill a utility role for Boston this season.
... See More... See LessRed Sox's Jarren Duran: Could sit against left-handers
RotowireDuran might not start against left-handed pitchers this season, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com speculates.
TheRed Sox haven't been able to trade from their glut of outfielders this offseason and appear motivated to give Wilyer Abreu an opportunity to play every day, which means Duran could get squeezed out of an everyday role. The left-handed-hitting Duran slashed only .211/.260/.340 over 209 regular-season plate appearances against southpaw hurlers in 2025.
... See More... See LessRed Sox's Anthony Seigler: Traded to Boston
RotowireTheRed Sox acquiredSeigler in a trade with the Brewers on Monday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
Seigler hit .194/.292/.210 in 34 games with the Brewers in 2025 but posted a .414 on-base percentage during his time at Triple-A Nashville. The 26-year-old offers unique positional versatility with an ability to play third base, second base, both corner outfield spots and catcher. Seigler has minor-league options remaining and seems likely to begin the 2026 campaign at Triple-A Worcester.
... See More... See LessRed Sox's Andruw Monasterio: Sent to Boston in trade
RotowireTheRed Sox acquiredMonasterio on Monday in a trade with the Brewers, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
Monasterio offers a steady glove at multiple infield spots and he improved offensively with the Brewers in 2025, slashing .270/.319/.437 with four home runs over 68 regular-season contests. The 28-year-old enters a crowded infield picture for the Red Sox and will most likely open 2026 in a reserve role.
