Athletics' Brett Harris: Undergoes thumb surgery
RotowireHarris underwent left thumb surgery Tuesday, Jason Burke of SI.com reports.
It's not clear exactly when Harris hurt his thumb, nor is it known the specific type of procedure he had. Harris is expected to be ready to go for the beginning of spring training, and assuming that happens he'll enter camp with a chance to win a starting job in theAthletics' infield. The 27-year-old slashed .274/.349/.342 with zero home runs over 84 plate appearances during his time with the big club in 2025.

CBS Sports Chris TowersAthletics' Lawrence Butler: Undergoes patellar tendon surgery
RotowireButler underwent surgery Friday to repair a tear in his right patellar tendon.
Butler also had a debridement of chronic scar tissue in his right knee and received a platelet-rich plasma injection to combat chronic tendinitis in his left patellar tendon. The expectation is that he will be ready to go for spring training. Butler played through knee issues down the stretch of the 2025 season, but the hope is that the procedures performed Friday will allow him to put his knee problems behind him. The 25-year-old slashed .234/.306/.404 with 21 home runs and 22 stolen bases over 152 games this season.

RotowireButler will meet with a doctor to determine whether surgery is required to repair a patellar tendon strain in his right knee, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Butler played through the injury for the last couple weeks of the regular season. If he does need surgery on the knee, it's unclear at this juncture how long his rehab would take. Butler finished the 2025 campaign having slashed .234/.306/.404 with 21 home runs and 22 stolen bases over 152 contests.

CBS Sports R.J. AndersonAthletics' Brady Basso: Takes loss as opener
RotowireBasso (1-1) took the loss Sunday, allowing a run on three hits and two walks over 1.1 innings against Kansas City. He recorded no strikeouts.
The 27-year-old opened the game Sunday but couldn't find a rhythm, loading the bases before exiting in the second inning with one out. Tyler Ferguson then allowed an inherited runner to score. Basso didn't make his first big-league appearance of the year until Aug. 27 after dealing with a left shoulder strain and beginning with Triple-A Las Vegas. He managed strong results with a 2.31 ERA across 11 outings and 11.2 innings, though a 1.80 WHIP, 4.07 FIP and 6.9 BB/9 suggest trouble beneath the surface.

RotowireKurtz went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer in Sunday's 9-2 loss against the Royals.
The rookie slugger provided Oakland's only offense of the night with a 423-foot blast off Sam Long in the eighth inning, marking his 36th homer of the season and his seventh since September 10. Over that span, he hit .233 with 13 RBI while continuing to show his game-changing power. Kurtz looks like the clear favorite for AL Rookie of the Year honors, as he'll finish the regular season with an impressive .290/.383/.619 slash line, 26 doubles, 86 RBI and 90 runs scored to go along with his outstanding long-ball total across 488 plate appearances.

CBS Sports Kate FeldmanAthletics' Jacob Wilson: Idle for season finale
RotowireWilson is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Royals.
Unless he's called upon off the bench as a pinch hitter, Wilson will wrap up his first full big-league season with a .311/.355/.444 slash line, 13 home runs, five stolen bases, 63 RBI and 62 runs in 125 games. Max Muncy will step in for Wilson at shortstop in the finale.

RotowireLangeliers is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Royals.
The 76-85Athletics have little at stake in the season finale and will allow Langeliers to get some rest after he had started each of the last five contests. The 27-year-old backstop will finish his fourth MLB campaign with a .277/.325/.536 slash line, 31 home runs, seven stolen bases, 73 runs and 72 RBI in 123 games.
... See More... See LessAthletics' Michael Kelly: Strong run continues
RotowireKelly allowed no hits and a walk with no strikeouts over a scoreless inning in Saturday's 4-2 loss against the Royals.
Kelly worked a scoreless seventh inning while issuing just a walk to Mike Yastrzemski. The right-hander has been excellent in September, posting a 1.93 ERA and 0.96 WHIP over 11 outings, including seven straight appearances without an earned run -- his longest streak since opening the year with 10 consecutive scoreless frames. Overall, the 33-year-old owns a 2.75 ERA and 1.25 WHIP across 41 appearances and 39.1 innings this season.
... See More... See LessAthletics' Elvis Alvarado: Strong finish to season
RotowireAlvarado allowed no hits and a walk with no strikeouts over 1.1 scoreless innings Saturday against Kansas City.
Alvarado entered in the fifth inning and recorded the final out of the frame, then worked through the sixth while allowing just one baserunner. The hard-throwing righty has been sharp down the stretch, tossing 6.1 scoreless innings over his past five appearances and posting a 1.86 ERA across nine outings in September. In his rookie season, he owns a 3.27 ERA and 1.33 WHIP across 36 appearances and 41.1 innings.
... See More... See LessAthletics' Brady Basso: Opening Sunday's contest
RotowireBasso will serve as theAthletics' opening pitcher in Sunday's game against the Royals, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
The Athletics won't have Jeffrey Springs make his normally scheduled start in the season finale, so Basso will take the mound first in what's expected to be a bullpen day. Basso made four starts for the Athletics in 2024 but has worked exclusively as a reliever in 2025. He's eclipsed two innings in just one of his 18 appearances between the majors and minors this season, so he's unlikely to work more than once through the batting order Sunday.
... See More... See LessAthletics' Shea Langeliers: Tallies three hits in loss
RotowireLangeliers went 3-for-4 with a double and one RBI in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Royals.
Langeliers brought theAthletics within a run with an RBI double in the eighth inning. The catcher has doubled in four straight games, each of which have been multi-hit efforts for him. He's batting .354 (28-for-79) in September, a hot stretch that has lifted his season slash line to .277/.325/.536 across 123 contests. Langeliers has added 31 home runs, 72 RBI, 73 runs scored, 32 doubles and seven stolen bases in a breakout campaign that cements him among the upper tier of catchers in the majors.
... See More... See LessAthletics' Luis Morales: Inefficient in loss
RotowireMorales (4-3) allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out five over 4.2 innings to take the loss versus the Royals on Saturday.
Morales needed 101 pitches (59 strikes) in this outing, which was far from his best work of the year. Over his 10 appearances (nine starts) in the majors, the rookie right-hander maintained a 3.14 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 43:18 K:BB across 48.2 innings. Morales' body of work in 2025 was decent -- he also had a 10.3 K/9 over 47 innings with Triple-A Las Vegas despite a 4.40 ERA. He should be in contention for a rotation spot from the get-go in 2026.
... See More... See LessAthletics' Brett Harris: Sitting down Saturday
RotowireHarris isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Royals.
After having his four-game hitting streak snapped Friday, Harris will retreat to the dugout to begin theAthletics' penultimate regular-season contest. Darell Hernaiz will slide over to third base as a result, clearing second for Max Schuemann.
