Diamondbacks' Tyler Locklear: Aiming for mid-May return
RotowireDiamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Sunday thatLocklear (shoulder/elbow) is trending toward a return around mid-May to early June, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.
Locklear will be a spectator for spring training while he continues to recover from Oct. 16 surgeries to address a torn labrum in his left shoulder and a torn ligament in his left elbow. Before suffering the two arm injuries in a Sept. 7 collision at first base with Boston's Connor Wong, Locklear slashed .175/.267/.262 with a 37.1 percent strikeout rate over 116 plate appearances with Arizona after coming over from Seattle in a trade-deadline deal. Locklear has a minor-league option remaining, so he could end up sticking around with Arizona's Triple-A affiliate in Reno once he completes his rehab process and gets activated from the injured list.
... See More... See LessDiamondbacks' Adrian Del Castillo: Status in doubt for Opening Day
RotowireDel Castillo said Monday that he expects to be sidelined for around one month due to his left calf injury, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.
While Del Castillo is hopeful that he'll be able to play in at least one Cactus League game or exhibition before the beginning of the regular season, the extended time he'll miss this spring could end up costing him a spot on the Opening Day roster. Arizona is expected to head into the season with Gabriel Moreno and James McCann as its top two catchers, so Del Castillo would merely provide a third option at the position and would likely see most of his playing time at designated hitter. Because the 26-year-old still has a pair of minor-league options remaining, theDiamondbacks may prefer to option Del Castillo to Triple-A Reno, which would allow him to play on a more regular basis once he overcomes the calf issue.
... See More... See LessDiamondbacks' Michael Soroka: Could land in relief role
RotowireSoroka might open the season in the bullpen, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
TheDiamondbacks enter spring training well stocked in the rotation but with an unsettled outlook in the bullpen. Soroka, signed by Arizona as a free agent in December, made 17 starts for the Nationals and Cubs in 2025 before a shoulder injury limited him to relief work over the final two weeks of the regular season. Built into Soroka's contract are incentives that reward him for starts or relief appearances -- two points for every start, one point for a relief outing. He will earn $250,000 each for reaching 10 and 20 points, $425,000 each for reaching 30 and 40, and $650,000 for reaching 50. Barring a significant injury, the 28-year-old right-hander could reach those incentives as a full-time starter or reliever or a combination of the two roles.
... See More... See LessDiamondbacks' A.J. Puk: Moves to 60-day IL
RotowireTheDiamondbacks placedPuk (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Sunday.
The left-hander will be unavailable for at least the first couple months of 2026 while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, so his move to the 60-day IL is just a procedural move. After reporting for spring training last week, Puk said that he expects to make his season debut before July.
... See More... See LessDiamondbacks' Grant Holman: Catches on with Arizona
RotowireTheDiamondbacks claimedHolman (finger) off waivers from the Athletics on Sunday.
The addition of Holman gives the Diamondbacks an intriguing developmental arm out of the bullpen. Though he struggled to a 5.09 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 17:9 K:BB over 23 innings in the big leagues with the Athletics last season, the 6-foot-6 Holman boasts a four-pitch mix and long levers that helped him finish in the 94th percentile in extension, per Aaron Hughes of SI.com. Arizona placed A.J. Puk (elbow) on the 60-day injured list to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Holman.
... See More... See LessDiamondbacks' Corbin Burnes: Heading to 60-day IL
RotowireTheDiamondbacks placedBurnes (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Sunday.
The move was merely procedural, as Burnes is targeting a season debut around the All-Star break while he completes his recovery from Tommy John surgery. The transaction clears a spot on the 40-man roster for right-hander Zac Gallen, who re-signed with Arizona on a one-year deal.
... See More... See LessDiamondbacks' Merrill Kelly: Named Opening Day starter
RotowireManager Torey Lovullo said Saturday thatKelly will start theDiamondbacks' March 26 season opener versus the Dodgers in Los Angeles, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.
The 37-year-old entered camp as the favorite for the Opening Day nod, but the re-signing of Zac Gallen on Friday made the decision less obvious. Kelly posted a 3.22 ERA and 1.06 WHIP over 128.2 innings with Arizona last season but failed to match that production after being traded to Texas, where he put up a 4.23 ERA across 55.1 frames.
... See More... See LessDiamondbacks' Joe Ross: Signs NRI deal with Arizona
RotowireRoss signed a minor-league contract with theDiamondbacks on Saturday and was invited to spring training, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
Across 37 appearances with the Phillies last season, Ross posted a 5.12 ERA and 1.47 WHIP alongside a 39:18 K:BB over 51 innings. He'll compete for a spot in Arizona's bullpen during spring training, but chances are he begins the regular season at Triple-A Reno.
... See More... See LessDiamondbacks' Justin Martinez: Back on 60-day IL
RotowireTheDiamondbacks placedMartinez (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Saturday.
The move will create space on Arizona's 40-man roster for Paul Sewald, who signed with the club on Thursday. Martinez underwent Tommy John surgery in June and is expected to return to the D-backs' bullpen near the end of August.
... See More... See LessDiamondbacks' Lourdes Gurriel: Will see time at DH
RotowireGurriel (knee) is expected to split time between designated hitter and left field upon his return from a torn ACL, John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports reports.
Gurriel showed up to camp Thursday, appearing to be ahead of schedule in his rehab, and was on the backfields Friday taking batting practice and shagging flyballs as normal. Although he told manager Torey Lovullo that he's aiming to return for Opening Day, the manager put the kibosh that notion. When Gurriel is ready to return, the plan calls for him to DH three-to-four times per week.
... See More... See LessDiamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Returning to Arizona
RotowireGallen signed a one-year, $22.025 milion contract with theDiamondbacks on Friday, Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.com reports.
After not receiving the level of interest he might have expected on the open market, Gallen will officially return to the Diamondbacks for another season on a contract that will pay him the same amount as the qualifying offer he declined earlier this winter. The 30-year-old righty is coming off the worst season of his big-league career, as he finished 2025 with a 4.83 ERA and 1.26 WHIP while serving up 31 homers -- tied for fourth-most in MLB. He remains a reliable option from a health standpoint, however, making at least 31 starts in three of the past four years.
... See More... See LessDiamondbacks' Lourdes Gurriel: Arrives at camp
RotowireGurriel (knee) arrived at camp Thursday and was optimistic he'd be able to beat the timeline for his return, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.
Gurriel underwent surgery to repair a torn ACL in September 2025 and is currently expected to miss the first two months of the season, but he told manager Torey Lovullo that he's shooting for Opening Day. Lovullo stressed that Gurriel's return "is not gonna be Opening Day," but the outfielder has already graduated to hitting and running. That suggests he could beat the June 1 estimated timeline. TheDiamondbacks will explore internal options to replace Gurriel in left field, including 40-man roster options Jorge Barrosa, Jordan Lawlar and Tim Tawa, but prospect Ryan Waldschmidt might be the top candidate.
... See More... See LessDiamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: Back at camp
RotowireCarroll was back at camp Thursday one day after undergoing surgery to repair a fractured hamate bone in his right hand, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
Carroll's return to camp wasn't just for show. He sported a cast over his right hand, but the left-handed outfielder was seen doing plyometric throwing drills. He can also run and execute leg work in the weight room. Carroll and theDiamondbacks are hoping he can return around Opening Day.
... See More... See LessDiamondbacks' Adrian Del Castillo: Nursing calf issue
RotowireDel Castillo is dealing with a left calf issue, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.
He's been working off to the side since reporting to camp earlier this week. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said Del Castillo will be brought along slowly this spring, but it's unclear how long that period might last. The 26-year-old's bat is seen as an asset and more developed than his defense, and while there are no plans to move Del Castillo out from behind the plate, he's third on the depth chart and likely to see more time at DH than catcher in 2026.
... See More... See LessDiamondbacks' Paul Sewald: Grabs one-year deal from Arizona
RotowireTheDiamondbacks signedSewald to a one-year, $1.5 million contract Thursday, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.
Sewald was the Diamondbacks' closer when they won the National League pennant in 2023 and opened the 2024 season in the role before eventually being replaced. He'll turn 36 in May and was limited to just 19.2 innings in 2025 due to injuries, posting a 4.58 ERA and 20:6 K:BB between the Guardians and Tigers. Sewald might not have much left in the tank, but given of the state of Arizona's bullpen, it wouldn't be far-fetched that he winds up with some save opportunities.
... See More... See LessDiamondbacks' Jordan Lawlar: Could see time in CF
RotowireLawlar could see regular playing time in center field this spring, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
Lawlar came up through the system as a shortstop and was introduced to second and third base over the last couple of seasons. With established starters ahead of him in the infield, the plan, which began during winter ball, was to turn Lawlar into an outfielder. He was in line for playing time in left field this spring as part of a group of players that will fill in for the injured Lourdes Gurriel (knee). Those plans could change after theDiamondbacks lost another outfielder; right-fielder Corbin Carroll suffered a wrist injury Tuesday that will him keep out until at least the start of the regular season. As a replacement for Carroll, Arizona manager Torey Lovullo mused about shifting center-fielder Alek Thomas to right. That would give Lawlar an opportunity to acclimate to center field, which was the team's first choice for the infielder-turned-outfielder.
... See More... See LessDiamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: Undergoes surgery
RotowireCarroll underwent surgery on his right hand Wednesday after breaking the hamate bone a day earlier while taking a swing during live batting practice, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
It's uncertain how long Carroll will be sidelined, but theDiamondbacks are holding out hope for a best-case scenario, which would have the outfielder return to action around Opening Day. Arizona's outfield was already short-staffed, as left-fielder Lourdes Gurriel (knee) could be out until June. As for Carroll's replacement, manager Torey Lovullo floated the idea of Alek Thomas moving from center to right field. The club has wanted to give prospect Jordan Lawlar -- an infielder for much of his career -- a look in center field. That would leave Tim Tawa and Jorge Barrosa to compete in left field.
... See More... See LessDiamondbacks' Andrew Saalfrank: Sidelined 10-plus months
RotowireSaalfrank (shoulder) said Wednesday that he expects to be sidelined 10-16 months, Arizona Sports reports.
Saalfrank underwent surgery Monday to repair the left labrum in his shoulder and has already been placed on the 60-day injured list. The rehab timeline gives the lefty a chance to be ready for the start of the 2027 season, but it is not a given.
... See More... See LessDiamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: Breaks hand, need surgery
RotowireCarroll suffered a broken hamate bone in his right hand during a live batting practice session Tuesday and is slated to undergo surgery Wednesday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
TheDiamondbacks likely won't provide a recovery timeline for Carroll until surgery is completed, but the procedure on his non-dominant hand will cost him significant time this spring and prevent him from competing for the United States in the World Baseball Classic. The 25-year-old outfielder's availability for the Diamondbacks' March 26 season opener versus the Dodgers is also firmly in question.
... See More... See LessDiamondbacks' Pavin Smith: Finds home at first base
RotowireArizona general manager Mike Hazen said Tuesday thatSmith will stick to first base instead of playing multiple positions this season, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. "We've never really given him a spot to sort of solidify himself defensively, Hazen said of Smith, who at times has been used as an outfielder. "We'll be doing that this year."
Entering camp, theDiamondbacks plan to platoon Smith (against right-handers) with Carlos Santana (against lefties). Implied in the general manager's comments is the expectation that Smith will show improved defense, which would help him maintain the strongside platoon role. Smith recorded a .258/.362/.434 slash line with eight home runs and 28 RBI over 87 games and 287 plate appearances in 2025, the most playing time he's had since 2021.
