Fans of Amazon'sCitadel TV series are in for some bad news when it comes to the future of the spy thriller franchise. The new season has been delayed, and its various spin-offs are now being put on hold.
Castle is Amazon'sspy television series starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra as elite agents of Citadel, a global intelligence organization. After they are seemingly killed in action, they have their memories wiped, and eight years later find themselves drawn back into their dangerous line of work. The first season's six episodes had a production budget of $300 million, making it one of the most expensive TV shows ever made — and thatastronomical budget is likely one of the reasons why new episodes are under scrutiny by Amazon.

Paradise Season 2 Gets an Exciting Production Update

The Hollywood Reporter claims that, according to an insider, Amazon MGM is movingCitadel Season 2 back from a planned Fall 2025 release to Spring 2026 because they are "unhappy with what they have seen so far of Season 2." Amazon had no comment regarding the insider's claims. In addition, allCitadel spin-off series are now on hold "until the second season is released, if not indefinitely".
With its international spy thriller premise,Citadel was originally intended to have multiple spin-off series in different languages. An Italian series (Citadel: Diana) and an Indian series (Citadel: Honey Bunny) aired in October and November 2024, respectively. Other countries intended to be a part of theCitadel banner included Spain and Mexico, but those shows both appear to be on the back burner for now.
The First Season of Citadel Faced Similar Issues
Shooting forSeason 2 ofCitadel wrapped in late November 2024, and the new season is facing similar issues to its predecessor. The first six episodes ofCitadel underwent extensive reshoots that caused the show's budget to balloon up to $300 million, and the show also experienced a huge shakeup when creative differences between theRusso Brothers and Midnight Radio led to two executive producers departing.

With Season 2 facing similar turmoil, fans are left to wonder if this could be the end of the road forCitadel. Exact numbers for how much the second season will cost Amazon have yet to be shared, but the streaming giant may no longer need the high-budget series in its lineup.Citadel was initially pitched to beAmazon's answer to James Bond — and with the company now gaining control over the most iconic spy franchise in history,Citadel appears to be left hanging by a thread.
