Creature Commandosmarks the soft launch of James Gunn's DC Universe (DCU), the new cinematic universe starring characters from DC Comics. As the first season of the animated series comes to an end, audiences now have a better view of Gunn's plans for the franchise moving forward. Although the true launch of the DCU will come later this year withSuperman,Creature Commandosdoes an excellent job of introducing certain plotlines and characters that will prove important in future projects.

TheCreature Commandosseason finale focuses on Nina Mazursky, who relives parts of her childhood leading up to her recruitment by Amanda Waller for Task Force M. The episode, entitled "A Very Funny Monster," depicts the Creature Commandos as they attempt to complete their mission by assassinating Princess Ilana Rostovic of Pokolistan to avoid World War III. Nina is tasked with the duty of murdering the princess but struggles with the idea of killing someone for something she hasn't done yet. Along the way, she remembers her difficult past, giving audiences a better understanding of who Nina is as a character--and hinting at what her future could be in the DCU.

Nina Mazursky is an obscure DC Comics character brought to life in James Gunn's new DCU. Nina was born to Edward and Lily Mazursky, but an abnormality caused her to emerge with her lungs on the outside of her body. Edward, a scientist working in Star City, went to great lengths to ensure that his daughter survived despite her breathing difficulty. He fashioned a special machine to help the infant breathe. However, the pain of watching her child go through all this didn't sit well with Lily, who eventually removed herself from the household, leaving Edward and Nina alone. Hoping to make life easier for Nina, Edward conducted experiments with amphibious DNA. While Edward was well-meaning in his experiments, they didn't go as expected.Nina was transformed into a human-amphibian hybrid, requiring a special water tank to breathe.

Life was difficult for Nina thereafter, with her transformation making it almost impossible to relate to her peers. At school, she suffered endless torment from her classmates and, though her father was always supportive, Nina couldn't help but feel that she was becoming a burden. She ran away, sneaking into the sewer system, where she lived in solitude for months before finally being discovered by a wandering photographer who happened to snap a few pictures of her. It wasn't long after that Nina was apprehended by animal control and the Star City Police Department. Tragically, Edward was shot by the police while trying to break through their barrier to get to his daughter.Nina was brought to Belle Reve prison under the watchful eye of ARGUS, where she was eventuallyrecruited by Amanda Waller for the Creature Commandos.

How Nina's Backstory Affects Her In Creature Commandos

Nina Mazursky Carries Her Trauma With Her in the DCU

Although her story isn't revealed until the season finale, Nina's history affected her profoundlyduring the events ofCreature Commandos. Unlike most of the other members of Task Force M, Nina had a loving parent who helped guide her through the trials and tribulations of her difficult early years. Despite her mother leaving when she was young, Nina had a father who was always there for her and showed her unrelenting love, even to the very end. This makes Nina one of the most emotionally stable members of the team. Unlike the Bride or Doctor Phosphorus, whose anger drives them,Nina can show compassion and love more readily. This helps her make friends among the other Creature Commandos. She quickly bonds with G.I. Robot, who lovingly calls her "Friend Nina" right up until his death early in the season. Nina also forges a surprising friendship with the Bride, who considers her to be the only real friend she's ever had. There is no denying that Nina was the heart of the Creature Commandos, tying them together when no one else could.

While Nina Mazursky is a good influence onthe other Creature Commandos, they aren't the best influence on her. Most of the other members of Task Force M are ruthless killers who have no qualms about shedding blood at every turn of their mission. Nina often objects to their actions because, unlike them, she remembers what it feels like to be shown warmth and love. This doesn't stop them from convincing her to assassinate Princess Ilana Rostovic during her daily swim in a nearby pond. As the most moral member of the team, Nina struggles with this duty, unsure if she has what it takes to end a life. Nevertheless, she is convinced that killing the princess is necessary to prevent World War III and accepts the responsibility.Tragically, Nina is unable to kill the princess, who turns the knife on her, brutally stabbing her to death in the pond.Had Nina only adhered to her strong moral compass, everything might have turned out differently.

James Gunn has confirmed that several members of Task Force M could appear in the DCUafter the events ofCreature Commandos. Frank Grillo's Rick Flag Sr. is confirmed to appear in the upcomingSupermanmovie and the second season of the Max original seriesPeacemaker. Other Creature Commandos are also expected to make the jump into the larger DCU at some point in the future, bridging the gap between the franchise's animated and live-action projects.Nevertheless, given the events ofCreature Commandos' season finale, it seems unlikely that Nina Mazursky will appear again. Her tragic death at the hands of Ilana Rostovic seemingly ends her time in the DCU prematurely, with her death sticking out as the first major tragedy of James Gunn's new franchise.

Nevertheless, it is always possible for characters to come back from the dead.Creature Commandosalready proved that death isn't always permanent, bringing back G.I. Robot in the finale after his tragic death earlier in the season. However, it may be that Nina's death was far too formative to the team for it to be undone in future projects. The Bride was particularly affected by Nina's death, using the tragedy as a springboard to investigate the princess further, leading her to the revelation that Circe's vision had been correct all along.Fueled by her pain over losing her only friend, the Bride now leads the new Creature Commandos in Nina's honor. Therefore, though she is dead, Nina's legacy will continue to live on in the DCU for a very long time.

Nina Mazursky may beCreature Commandos' most tragic character. Though she was the purest member of Task Force M, her life ends tragically, forcing her teammates to pick up the pieces. Nevertheless, her death inspired characters like the Bride to forge a better path forward, spelling a brighter future for the Creature Commandos in the DCU.
