Mediation Committee

Collage: The facades of the buildings of the Bundestag and the Bundesrat merge together.

The Mediation Committee is a body that acts on the part of both theBundestag and theBundesrat. The Committee is composed of 16 members of theBundesrat and 16 Members of theBundestag, who are appointed in proportion to the strengths of the parliamentary groups. It has the task of seeking a consensus between theBundestag and theBundesrat when legislation passed by theBundestag fails to find a majority in theBundesrat. If decisions by the Mediation Committee deviate from those of theBundestag, a newBundestag decision is required. If the consent of theBundesrat is required for a law, theBundestag and the Federal Government may also demand that the Mediation Committee be convened in order to reach agreement.
