The secession ofSouth Sudan was a result of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement, which granted southern Sudan semiautonomous status and stipulated a referendum on independence; the peace agreement itself ended decades of conflict between the southern Sudan population and the Sudanese government. The referendum was held in 2011, resulting in South Sudan’s independence on July 9, 2011.
