Jennifer Lawrence (born August 15, 1990, Indian Hills, northeast of Louisville, Kentucky, U.S.) is an American actress who is known for her versatility on-screen and her accessible,candid off-screen persona. She is the recipient of anAcademy Award, aBAFTA Award, and threeGolden Globes.
Early life
Lawrence knew from an early age that she wanted to act, and she began performing in school plays and local theater inLouisville,Kentucky. At the age of 14, in 2005, hoping to break intoacting and modeling, she went with her mother toNew York City to visit talent agencies. While there, she was discovered by a talent scout and subsequently auditioned for his agency. She spent the summer of that year inNew York, performing small acting roles and modeling for advertisements. On the basis of that success, after Lawrence’s early graduation fromhigh school, the family moved toLos Angeles to allow her to further her career.
Breakthrough and rise to stardom
From 2007 to 2009 Lawrence played the teenaged daughter of apsychotherapist in thecable television comedyThe Bill Engvall Show. She soon followed that with the role that proved to be her big break, the lead in themovieWinter’s Bone (2010). For her portrayal of Ree, a poor rural teenager tracking down her missing criminal father in theOzark Mountains, Lawrence, at the age of 20, received her first best actress Academy Award nomination.

Lawrence rose to greater fame in the role of the shape-shifting mutant Mystique inX-Men: First Class (2011), a role shereprised inX-Men: Days of Future Past (2014),X-Men: Apocalypse (2016), andDark Phoenix (2019). She made the transition to stardom upon being cast as heroineKatniss Everdeen inThe Hunger Games (2012)—the film version of the first book in the Hunger Games trilogy,Suzanne Collins’s runaway best-selling young-adult novels. As Katniss, Lawrence played a character with some similarities to Ree, another tough teenager using outdoor survival skills to stay alive in dire circumstances. She reprised the role of Katniss inThe Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013),The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 (2014), andThe Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 (2015).
Lawrence also starred in another notable film in 2012, directorDavid O. Russell’sSilver Linings Playbook. In that movie she played Tiffany Maxwell, a young widow who befriends a man struggling withmental illness (played byBradley Cooper). She won critical acclaim in the popular film and became the second youngest woman to win theAcademy Award for best actress (2013).
Lawrence then appeared as the wife of a con artist (Christian Bale) in Russell’s cat-and-mouse rompAmerican Hustle (2013); the role earned her an Oscarnomination for best supporting actress.
Later career
In 2015 Lawrence portrayed a benighted single mother whose entrepreneurial talents propel her to wealth and success in Russell’sJoy; for her performance, Lawrence received her fourth Oscar nomination. She narratedA Beautiful Planet (2016), a documentary featuring footage ofEarth taken from theInternational Space Station. Her other 2016 credit was thesci-fi romancePassengers, in which she played a writer who was among 5,000 hibernating intergalactic travelers heading to another planet.
In 2017 Lawrence starred in the psychological thrillerMother! as the second wife of a famous poet, whose peaceful life in a secluded mansion is disrupted by the arrival of strangers. She then played a former ballerina who becomes a Russian spy in the thrillerRed Sparrow (2018). In the dark comedyDon’t Look Up (2021), Lawrence andLeonardo DiCaprio were cast as astronomers who try to warn humankind of an impending comet strike that will destroy Earth.
During this time Lawrence began to seek out more personal projects. This led to her starring role inCauseway (2022), an understateddrama about anAfghanistan War veteran who returns home after suffering a brain injury. In 2023 Lawrence was cast inNo Hard Feelings. She played the role of a woman hired by a reclusive young man’s parents to help him overcome his socialineptitude before he begins his college life. InDie My Love (2025), directed by Lynne Ramsay, she starred alongsideRobert Pattinson as a young mother who grapples with thevicissitudes of early parenthood.

Personal life
Lawrence married Cooke Maroney, an art dealer, in 2019. Three years later the couple welcomed a son, Cy. Their second child was born in 2025.
