These words from “Keep On Moving” take on a very special added significance in the context of this concert (read on)… Performed live at Smile Jamaica in December of 1976, the song was not a part of Bob’s usual setlist during that period. Originally written and released by Curtis Mayfield and The Impressions, the Wailers recorded their own version of it in 1970 for the Lee “Scratch” Perry-produced ‘Soul Revolution (Part II)’ album. It was rarely if ever played live prior to this.But just a couple of days before the concert, someone tried to assassinate Gong and stop him from taking the stage. What began as a free unity concert for the people had become politicized when the government announced snap elections just 10 days after, making it look as though Bob was supporting the majority party in power. After weeks of threats, two gunman showed up and shot up his home/band HQ in Kingston during a break from rehearsals. A bullet hit Bob across his chest lodging into his arm, @officialritamarley was shot in the back of her head while driving away (saved by the car window and her dreadlocks), manager Don Taylor was shot several times in his stomach, and one other person was also hit. Miraculously, all survived.Two days later, both Bob and Rita defiantly took the stage together, showing the people that this movement and message of peace cannot be stopped. What was supposed to be a simple appearance and maybe a couple of songs, turned into an hour-long set of Bob at perhaps his most transcendent, invoking the spirit of the Most High with every word and every movement. Even though the song was released 12 years prior, when Gong sang “Lord, I got to keep on moving, where I can’t be found. Lord, they’re coming after me”, it felt as though it was written for the moment at hand. Much of Bob Marley’s music embodies this same feeling of timelessness, seeming as relevant today as the day it was written.After the concert, Bob did keep on moving, heading to Nassau straight after the show to lay low before ultimately making his way to London, where he and the band would live in the months ahead while recording their next album, EXODUS.

March 1977: While in the UK recording the ‘Exodus’ album, Bob Marley and friends organize a scrimmage against the @islandrecordsuk staff at Battersea Park in the Chelsea neighborhood of London ⚽️ They would often play football here during the day and then head over to Basing Street Studios at night to record. It was time of focus, passion and creativity for Bob, who moved here with the band following an assassination attempt on his life, trying to stop him from performing at Smile Jamaica, a peace concert that Bob organized for the people, but became politicized by the government trying make it appear as though he supported one party over another. Away from the distractions of home, the band, all living together at 42 Oakley Street (now an historic landmark in London), spent their days exercising and writing music, and their nights recording.
