Warning: Fraud attempts using alleged e-mail addresses of Austrian diplomatic missions
We warn against spoof e-mails that are currently circulating in the name of Austrian embassies or foreign trade centers. E-mails with the domain name bmeia.OR.at should be ignored or deleted immediately. E-mails from Austrian representations (embassies, consulates general, cultural forums, permanent representations) are exclusively from the domain name @bmeia.gv.at.

Legalization/Apostille
On January 11, 2024, the Apostille Convention (Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents of 5 October 1961) entered into force between Austria and Canada. This means that documents and certificates issued in Canada will only require an apostille from the competent Canadian authority in order to be recognized in Austria. No further legalization by the Austrian Embassy in Ottawa is required. Further information on apostilles can be foundhere. Canadian documents that are authenticated by Global Affairs Canada (GAC) can also be legalized by the Austrian Embassy in Ottawa after January 11, 2024.
Access to the public
The Austrian Embassy in Ottawa is accessible to the public by appointment only. Appointments have to be booked through ouronline appointment booking system. During business hours, the Embassy can also be contacted via phone (tel. +1 613 789 1444) or e-mail (ottawa-ob(at)bmeia.gv.at). This applies to Austria‘s honorary consulates as well.
Simon Wiesenthal Prize 2025
Call for Submissions
TheSimon Wiesenthal Prize 2025rewards outstanding civic engagement to combat antisemitism and educate the public about the Holocaust. The Prize is awarded in two categories,
- Civic engagement to combat antisemitism and
- Civic engagement to educate the public about the Holocaust
each with prize money of7,500 euros. In addition, a Main Prize of15,000 euros is awarded for exceptional engagement in both these areas. Entries can be submitteduntil 19 December 2025 using theonline application form. You can submit an entry in your own right – as an individual or a group – or nominate another person or initiative whose activities you would like to highlight.
We also invite you to share this call for entries with people and organisations you may know who actively seek to combat antisemitism and promote Holocaust education. Together, we can send a strong message – for our democracy and for respectful, peaceful coexistence.

Austrian Scholarship options for foreign students, graduates and researchers for the academic year 2026/27
Scholarship options for students, graduates and researchers for the academic year 2026/2027 have now been published via the Austrian grant database. All relevant information is available on the websitewww.grants.at – Austria’s biggest online database for scholarships and research grants for all academic areas. Financial support options for students, graduates and researchers range from classical grants and scholarships, allowances and prizes to extensive national, European and international research support programmes. The database offers information about application requirements, duration, quota, amount of funding provided and is continuously updated.
The following grants are of particular interest to students and academics from Canada and Jamaica:
- Franz Werfel-Fellowship is intended for young university teachers of German language and literature studies with a special focus on Austrian literature
- Richard Plaschka-Fellowship is aimed at researchers in the historical sciences who are primarily occupied with Austrian history
- Ernst Mach-Grant (worldwide) is intended for young researchers and university lecturers of all disciplines who are studying or pursuing research outside Austria
- Ernst Mach Grant for studying at an Austrian university of applied sciences (Fachhochschule) is targeting international students who want to spend a study period at an Austrian university of applied sciences.
