MAJOR ECONOMIC INDICATORS

Consumer Price Index

In February, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers rose 0.2 percent, seasonallyadjusted, and rose 2.8 percent over the last 12 months, not seasonally adjusted. The index for allitems less food and energy increased 0.2 percent in February (SA); up 3.1 percent over the year (NSA).

Employment Cost Index

Compensation costs increased 0.9 percent for civilian workers, seasonally adjusted, from September 2024 to December 2024. Over the year, total compensation rose 3.8 percent, wages and salaries rose 3.8 percent, and benefit costs rose 3.6 percent.

Employment Situation

Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 151,000 in February, and the unemploymentrate changed little at 4.1 percent. Employment trended up in health care, financialactivities, transportation and warehousing, and social assistance. Federal government employment declined.

Producer Price Index

The Producer Price Index for final demand was unchanged in February. Prices for final demand goods increased 0.3 percent, and the index for final demand services declined 0.2 percent. Prices for final demand advanced 3.2 percent for the 12 months ended in February.

Productivity and Costs

Productivity increased 1.5 percent in the nonfarm business sector in the fourth quarter of 2024; unit labor costs increased 2.2 percent (seasonally adjusted annual rates). In manufacturing, productivity increased 0.3 percent and unit labor costs increased 3.7 percent.

Real Earnings

Real average hourly earnings for all employees increased 0.1 percent in February, seasonally adjusted. Average hourly earnings increased 0.3 percent, and CPI-U increased 0.2 percent. Real average weekly earnings increased 0.1 percent.

U.S. Import and Export Price Indexes

Prices for U.S. imports increased 0.4 percent in February, after rising 0.4 percent in January. U.S. export prices rose 0.1 percent in February following a 1.3-percent increase the previous month. Over the past year, import prices increased 2.0 percent and export prices rose 2.1 percent.
