Erdington Sons of Rest veterans' club destroyed in blaze

The club's members were trying to raise money so they could move from their 1930s wooden clubhouse to a new building

A Birmingham military veterans group's former home has been destroyed in a blaze.

The Sons of Rest building,in Brookvale Park, off George Road, Erdington, was engulfed by fire in the early hours of today (Oct 30).


Crews from Perry Barr, Erdington and Aston fire stations dealt with the incident.


AWest Midlands Fire Service spokesman said: “We responded to a building fire in Erdington early this morning.”

The club for retired armed forces members was trying to raise £300,000 so they could move from their 1930s wooden clubhouse to a new building.

It had previously been targeted by vandals.

Stockland Green Labour councillor Penny Holbrook took to Twitter to thank the fire service for their efforts.


She wrote: “Thanks to @ErdingtonFire for attending Brookvale Park last night.

“I have arranged for urgent removal of remains of building

“Sadly an arson incident has finally finished off the sons of rest (sic) in Brookvale Park.”

Coun Holbrook added that the group moved out of the building recently.

She said: "They building has not been used for a few months, the group had moved out."
