Billboard Dance Charts Billboard’s tracking of music’s biggest dance hits began in October 1974, as disco was burning up dance floors across America. Initially, the survey reflected songs that were popular regionally, but by 1976 a national chart was launched: National Disco Action, which ranked the most-played records in dance clubs. Through the ensuing decades, Billboard has continued to chart the country’s biggest dance hits — not just what people are dancing to in clubs, but what dance hits they stream, buy and listen to on the radio. Today, Billboard publishes dance-focused charts including Top Dance Albums, which began in 2001 and ranks each week’s most popular dance albums, and Hot Dance Songs, which, dating to its 2013 start, reflects the biggest dance tracks, now primarily recorded by DJs or producers with an emphasis on electronic-based production. Over the years, such acts as Daft Punk, David Guetta, Madonna, Marshmello, Kylie Minogue, Pet Shop Boys and Donna Summer have shimmied their way onto Billboard’s dance charts. More recently, reflecting the ever-growing world of dance music, Billboard unveiled the Hot Dance/Pop Songs chart in 2025. The list ranks the most popular current dance/pop titles featuring songs with dance-centric vocals, melody and hooks by artists not as rooted in the dance/electronic genre.
