Madonna yesterday (Nov. 20) added a ninth U.K. No. 1 album to her career tally, joining her 11th No. 1 single to complete her domination of the British sales charts. “Confessions on a Dance Floor” (Warner Bros.) went straight to No. 1 on the new album survey, while “Hung Up” started a second week at the singles chart peak.

“Confessions” is the fifth of Madonna’s last six album releases to reach the U.K. summit, the only exception being the 2001 compilation “GHV2: Greatest Hits Volume 2,” which stalled at No. 2. Her first British album bestseller was 1984’s “Like a Virgin.”

On the singles chart, “Hung Up” continued to rule ahead of Westlife’s former chart-topper “You Raise Me Up” (S/Sony BMG), which is still No. 2, and Black Eyed Peas’ “My Humps” (A&M), which arrived at No. 3.

There were five other new entries in the top 10, with female pop act Girls Aloud in at No. 4 with “Biology” (Polydor), followed by Will Young’s “Switch It On” (S/Sony BMG) at No. 5. Completing a trio of “survivors” of T.V. talent show contestants, Liberty X entered at No. 6 with “A Night To Remember” (Unique/EMI Virgin), the official theme song of this year’s Children In Need telethon by the BBC.

The Darkness opened at No. 8 with “One Way Ticket” (Atlantic), the near-title track from its new album “One Way Ticket to Hell … and Back,” which is released next Monday. The White Stripes’ “The Denial Twist” (XL Recordings), the latest single from “Get Behind Me Satan,” entered at No. 10.

Beneath Madonna on the album chart, there was a No. 2 start for the new compilation “Never Forget — The Ultimate Collection” (RCA) by erstwhile pop heroes Take That, following the screening by ITV last Wednesday of a documentary about the Robbie Williams-featuring group.

Also new in the top 10 were Green Day’s “Bullet in a Bible” (Reprise) at No. 6 and Babyshambles’ “Down In Albion” (Rough Trade) at No. 10.

Robbie Williams’ “Intensive Care” (Chrysalis) is in its third week at No. 1 on the European Top 100 Albums chart, while “Hung Up” soared 73-1 on the Eurochart Hot 100 Singles survey.
