World number six Milos Raonic has withdrawn from the French Open after failing to recover from a foot injury.

The Canadian had hoped to be fit for Roland Garros after missing last week's Italian Open.

"I tried my best to be back and healthy in time after surgery," the 24-year-old wrote on his Twitter account.

"I will continue my rehab and proceed with preparations for a 100% strong Wimbledon and Queens run."

Raonic retired from last month's Monte Carlo Open after suffering the injury but attempted to play in the Madrid Masters, wherehe went out at the quarter-final stage to Britain's Andy Murray.

The draw for the French Open takes place on Friday, with play starting on Sunday.
