Emmerdale has been named the best soap at the Inside Soap Awards for the first time.

EastEnders and Coronation Street, who are the usual winners of the top prize, both took four awards each.

Emmerdale also picked up awards for best storyline, outstanding achievement and best bad boy at the event in London's Ministry Of Sound nightclub.

Home and Away won two awards, while Hollyoaks and Waterloo Road each picked up one trophy.

Emmerdale's best storyline trophy was for Cameron Murray's killer cover-up and the outstanding achievement award was in recognition of the 40th anniversary live episode.

Dominic Power, who plays Cameron Murray, took the best bad boy prize.

Strictly Come Dancing contestant Natalie Gumede took the best bitch award for her portrayal of domestic abuser Kirsty Soames in Coronation Street. She left the soap earlier this year.

Coronation Street's Michelle Keegan, who plays Tina McIntyre, collected the award for soap's sexiest female for a fifth year running, while Danny Mac took the equivalent male prize for playing Mark 'Dodger' Savage in Hollyoaks.

Best actor went to David Neilson for his role as Coronation Street's Roy Cropper. He is involved in a right-to-die storyline with terminally ill wife Hayley (Julie Hesmondhalgh).

Jacqueline Jossa was voted best actress for her teenage character Lauren Branning in EastEnders.

The Australian show Home and Away won best daytime soap and best daytime star for Steve Peacocke as Darryl 'Brax' Braxton, while BBC One's Waterloo Road was crowned best drama.
