Scotland: Zander Clark, Liam Kelly & Lewis Ferguson called up for World Cup qualifiers

Graphic of Scotland's September fixtures

St Johnstone goalkeeper Zander Clark, Motherwell counterpart Liam Kelly, and Aberdeen midfielder Lewis Ferguson have been named in the Scotland squad for next month's World Cup qualifiers.

Kelly, 25, has been in squads before without winning a cap, but it is a first summons for Clark, 29, while Ferguson, 21, also receives a debut call-up.

The goalkeeping duo replace David Marshall and Jon McLaughlin in Steve Clarke's 26-man pool to face Denmark, Moldova and Austria.

Marshall and McLaughlin were part of the Euro 2020 squad, but the former number one has fallen out of favour at Derby County and the latter misses out with a "little issue".

It means Craig Gordon of Hearts is likely to be Scotland's starting goalkeeper for the forthcoming games, but Clarke is not ruling out a return for Marshall in future.

"I've spoken to David, he's disappointed but fully understands why he is not involved in this camp," said Clarke.

"If he gets himself a move before the end of the transfer window, or gets back involved with Derby, he will be straight back into my thoughts.

"Jon has a little issue at Rangers and Rangers told us he wasn't available so he misses out as well.

"It's a great chance for Liam and Zander to step up and impress the new goalkeeping coach."

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has been ruled out through injury but Norwich City counterpart Kenny McLean returns after missing the Euros.

Clarke revealed Aberdeen's Ferguson was on standby for that tournament.

"I actually spoke to Lewis in the summer about keeping fit in case we got some injuries or Covid issues," he said. "So he's someone I've been thinking about for a little while.

"I've always liked Lewis and kept an eye on his progress. He's always done very well with Aberdeen. I like what he gives box to box."

Sheffield United's John Fleck is the only other absentee among those who represented Scotland at the finals.

Scotland are currently second in Group F after three games - four points behind leaders Denmark - after drawing with Austria and Israel and beating the Faroe Islands in March.

It has been confirmed, too, that Clarke has extended his contract until the end of the Euro 2024 campaign, and that former Hearts coach Austin MacPhee and ex-Rangers goalkeeper Chris Woods are joining his backroom staff.
