Sam Baldock scored a debut goal to give Derby County their first Championship victory of the season with a slender win at Hull City.

Baldock, who only joined Derby on Tuesday, was on hand from close range in the 57th minute after Matt Ingram had fumbled Lee Buchanan's initial effort.

Victory was a fine way to bounce back for Wayne Rooney's Rams after they conceded goals in the 91st and 100th minutes to lose at Peterborough on Saturday.

For Hull, it was a second defeat at the MKM Stadium in four days following a 3-0 thumping by QPR.

In a desperate search for a winning formula, Rooney handed debuts to striker Baldock and ex-England defender Phil Jagielka, who haveboth signed short-term deals. For Jagielka, 39, this was a first Championship appearance since April 2006, when he was with Sheffield United.

The Rams grew into the game after a bright start from Hull and they were close to taking the lead when Poland winger Kamil Jozwiak got onto Nathan Byrne's long pass and struck the inside of the post.

Former Manchester United midfielder Ravel Morrison was then denied his first Derby goal by a fine save from Ingram.

But the key moment came when Baldock struck in the second half for his first goal since July 2020, having failed to score in 23 appearances for Reading last season.

The Tigers threw on former Derby midfielder Tom Huddlestone as a substitute for his second spell on Humberside, but he could not inspire his new team-mates.

And with the Rams having thrown away leads in their first two games, Jagielka, together with centre-half partner Curtis Davies - a combined age of 75 - held out for a first clean sheet in 10 Championship games.

Derby County assistant manager Liam Rosenior told BBC Radio Derby:

"People from the outside may think we're not organised and we don't believe in ourselves, but the performance at Peterborough was actually excellent in terms of what we are trying to build and the style of play we are trying to bring to the club.

"But the players took it up a level today and I thought we dominated the game.

"We were devastated at losing on Saturday but we knew we had to play our way, that's what me and the manager really believe in and I'm delighted for him to get our first win of the season."

Hull City manager Grant McCann told BBC Radio Humberside:

"We were very safe tonight. We didn't pass the ball quick enough, we didn't break the lines quick enough, we didn't pass forward quick enough.

"It's one of the few times I've questioned the group that when we went forward, we didn't look threatening and we know we are.

"We know we weren't at our best tonight, but it was a sloppy goal for us to concede and over the two home games, we conceded off three mistakes. It shouldn't happen and it has cost us."
